Kids' drawings show how their views on gender and STEM have changed

Imagine asking a classroom full of elementary school students to draw a scientist. Now try to guess how many of them would sketch a female or male scientist.

In the decade that spanned 1966 to 1977, teachers across the country gave 4,800 elementary school students this exact task in what became known as the Draw-A-Scientist study. Then a researcher named David Wade Chambers analyzed the drawings. What he found, in 1983, might not surprise you: Only 28 of the children drew a female scientist — and those students were all girls. That amounted to less than one percent of all students.

Rest assured that as times have changed, so have kids' gender stereotypes. A new study published in Child Development Tuesday analyzed dozens of Draw-A-Scientist studies conducted since Chambers' landmark experiment and found that, on average, 28 percent of participants drew a female scientist in the subsequent studies.
(Rebecca Ruiz. Kids are drawing more female scientists than ever before. Mashable. March 20, 2018.)

science, technology, engineering, and mathematics

The fact that, on average, more than a quarter of students participating in a Draw-A-Scientist study depicted a woman over the past three decades is heartening progress yet still nowhere close to parity, she says. Indeed, while women have made considerable gains in some STEM fields, they remain drastically underrepresented in others, like physics, engineering, and computer science.

bodega

Scores of Big Apple convenience stores have run out of Doritos, Cheetos and other Frito-Lay products — and snack fans can blame PepsiCo chief executive Indra Nooyi for their less crunchy lunches.

Frito-Lay, a unit of PepsiCo, started to cut the pay of its drivers last year by as much as 33 percent, or $30,000, prompting dozens to quit, The Post has learned.

Even with management taking over some routes in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, there are not enough trucks on the road to supply every customer, sources said.
(Josh Kosman. There is a massive Frito-Lay shortage in NYC bodegas. New York Post. March 19, 2018.)

NYC bodegas

throw a fit

A man and his young daughter were kicked off a Southwest Airlines flight after the toddler became upset and threw a fit as other passengers were boarding the flight.

But a Facebook video taken by another passenger, Alexis Armstrong, on Flight 1683 from Chicago to Atlanta shows the toddler being calm and quiet as Southwest employees remove her and her father from the aircraft.

The video begins with a Southwest employee telling the man to leave the flight with his daughter. The man argues that his daughter has calmed down before another airline employee also tells the man to leave the flight. Other passengers can be heard coming to the man’s defense before one of the employees threatens to put them on the next flight.
(Mark Matousek. Southwest faces outrage after a father and toddler were kicked off a flight when the child threw a tantrum. Business Insider. March 16, 2018.)

Pets on planes are significantly outnumbered by human passengers. But for airlines, dealing with passengers’ four-legged traveling companions can be fraught with problems.

Within the past year, Chicago-based United Airlines has found itself in the spotlight when a giant rabbit named Simon died aboard a trans-Atlantic flight and when the airline denied a seat to an emotional support peacock named Dexter.

Just this week, the airline said it would “assume full responsibility” for the death of a 10-month-old French bulldog that appeared to have suffocated Monday after it was placed inside an overhead compartment on a three-hour flight. On Tuesday, United reportedly sent a Kansas City, Mo.-bound German shepherd to Japan by mistake.

United takes heat over puppy's tragic overhead bin death

sexualize

According to a newly unsealed court filing, women at Microsoft who work in technical jobs filed 238 internal complaints pertaining to gender discrimination or sexual harassment from 2010 through 2016. The new document was first reported Monday evening by Reuters.

The figures were revealed as part of a proposed class-action lawsuit originally filed in 2015 (Moussouris v. Microsoft). The female plaintiffs argue that the company’s internal rating system discriminates against women and disfavors professional advancement for women.
(Cyrus Farivar. “Women at Microsoft are sexualized by their male managers,” lawsuit alleges. Ars Tecnica. March 14, 2018.)

Company records indicate that women at Microsoft are sexualized by their male managers and coworkers, leading to a substantial number of incidents of alleged sexual harassment, and even several incidents of sexual assault, that often go unpunished.
(ibid.)

to make sexual : endow with a sexual character or cast
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

The female plaintiffs argue that the company’s internal rating system discriminates against women and disfavors professional advancement for women.
(ibid.)

According to the American Psychological Association, sexualization occurs when "individuals are regarded as sex objects and evaluated in terms of their physical characteristics and sexiness."
