Forever stampって何? ― Forever stamp

Forever stamp

When the US Postal Service rolled out its Forever stamps in 2010 featuring a close-up of the Statue of Liberty, it wasn't actually of the iconic symbol of freedom.

Instead, it was the face of the more diminutive replica that stands on the Las Vegas Strip and occasionally gets dolled up in sports jerseys to celebrate events in Sin City. As if the mix-up wasn't embarrassing enough, it's also going to cost the Postal Service.

On Friday, a federal judge ruled that the Postal Service should pay $3.5 million to Robert Davidson, the sculptor of the Las Vegas replica.

US Postal Service

A man is accused of selling an elderly woman a "lemon" car.

Corey Smart was arrested in Noxubee County and charged with exploiting a vulnerable person.

Noxubee County Sheriff Terry Grassaree says Smart sold the woman a 1996 Buick on May 18 for $2,500.
(Man Charged with Selling Elderly Woman "Lemon" car. WTVA. June 13, 2018.)

To most, Lemons are a versatile fruit that works great in Tea, helps freshen the air, and remove the occasional stain. To the auto industry, however, lemons are anything but useful.

A Lemon is a slang term referring to any car that was a piece of junk right off the assembly line. Was it bad parts? Poor engineering? Hasty assembly? It’s hard to pinpoint exactly, but it happens, and it’s expensive.
(Ken Manchester. Is your automobile a lemon -Part 1. Mint Hill Times. June 20, 2018.)

Their new car turned out to be a lemon.

Online Etymology Dictionary

let go

Barnes & Noble

CEO Demos Parneros will not be paid severance and will be removed from the board immediately, the bookstore chain said late Tuesday. Barnes & Noble said the board was advised by a law firm in deciding to fire Parneros.

The company did not announce a reason for the firing. It said only that the CEO was not let go because of any disagreement about "financial reporting, policies or practices or any potential fraud relating thereto."

The company also reaffirmed its profit guidance for the current fiscal year. A spokesperson had no further comment.

let go

scrawny

Stunning video footage shows for the first time the junior soccer team that got lost in a network of caves in Thailand nine days ago and were just found.

The 5-minute video posted on Facebook on Monday by the country’s equivalent of the US Navy SEALs shows the scrawny boys — ages 11 to 16 — in red and blue soccer jerseys sitting on a rocky slope in a dark cave.

“We are coming, it’s OK, many people are coming, we are the first,” a British rescuer tells them, after confirming all 13 members are there.

salvo

Daniel Loeb, the hedge fund mogul known for his aggressive investment stances, intensified pressure on Nestlé on Sunday, calling on the board of the global food giant to split the company into three divisions.

In a letter, Mr. Loeb noted that his hedge fund, Third Point, had invested more than $3 billion in Nestlé, and called on the board to be “bolder” and “faster” in reimagining the company.

The letter was the latest salvo in a battle to reform Nestlé. “This is a call for urgency,” Mr. Loeb wrote, arguing that the company has not moved with enough speed to shed its less profitable divisions. Mr. Loeb has pushed Nestlé before, arguing that it should sell its stake in L’Oréal, the cosmetics maker.
(Jessica Silver-Greenberg. Activist Investor Daniel Loeb Intensifies Pressure on Nestlé to Reorganize. New York Times. July 1, 2018.)

The letter was the latest salvo in a battle to reform Nestlé.
