Enemy Number One

アメリカ女子プロバスケットボール協会（WNBA）で、トランスジェンダー選手の試合参加に対する意見の相違を巡り、騒動となっている模様です。

インディアナ州を拠点とするチームIndiana FeverのSophie Cunningham選手がトランスジェンダーの選手（つまり生物学的な性は男性でありながら性自認は女性という選手）が女子チームの試合に参加することに否定的な意見を表明したところ、トランスジェンダーの権利擁護を主張する立場の関係者から猛烈な批判を浴びているというものです。政治的に保守派とされる立場の人たちはCunningham選手の意見表明を支持する一方で、女子バスケットボール協会内においてもCunningham選手の意見に反発を示す関係者はおり、これを報じるメディアも意見は二分しているようで、状況は混沌としています。

以下はどちらかと言えば保守的立場に立つニューヨークポスト紙のオピニオン記事からの引用です。

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham expressed a mainstream opinion in a very compassionate way, but it’s been twisted beyond recognition by the ultra-illiberal world of women’s sports.

In a long ESPN profile two weeks ago, she stated that while she wants to “extend love” to everyone, biological males identifying as women don’t belong in girl’s sports or locker rooms.

About 15 years ago, this would have been the most banal statement of all time.

But in 2026, Cunningham’s reality-based declaration has made her Enemy Number One in the WNBA universe, where one must only hold the approved set of progressive politics.

There, the backlash has been enormous.

オピニオン記事の著者はCunningham選手は当たり前のことを述べただけ、と擁護していますが、その至極真っ当な意見表明により、

Enemy Number One

にされてしまった、と言っています。

この表現、その字面から意味するところは明らかですが、"Public Enemy Number One"というらしく、その定義は

the nation's most wanted criminal : the most dangerous threat to society

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

とあります。

この表現が初めて用いられたのは、定義にもあるように指名手配を受けている犯罪者を指したもので、1930年代に遡るようです。当時、「ナンバーワン」の指名手配者としてギャングの頭領であったアル・カポネが挙げられています。

"Public enemy No. 1" first appeared in the 1930s. The notorious gangster John Dillinger is often cited as the "FBI's first public enemy No. 1." In fact, the FBI never maintained a formal list of "public enemies." (Since 1951 the FBI has maintained a list of "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" - the names of the "toughest guys" the FBI would like to capture; but they are not named in any particular order.) The Chicago Crime Commission, however, did have a list, publicizing through the media its first lineup of "public enemies" in April 1930. Containing 28 names, the list was headed by Al Capone, and by 1931, at least, he had been dubbed "public enemy No. 1."

"Public Enemy Number One"はその後、指名手配犯罪者に限らず、上記の定義にもありますように、社会に害悪をもたらすもの、例えばタバコとか麻薬などを指して使われるようになりました。

WNBAでの騒動に関して言えば、オピニオン記事の著者は決してCunningham選手のことを"Public Enemy Number One"とは思ってはいませんが、敢えてこの表現を用いることでトランスジェンダー擁護派からの甚だしい憎悪が背景にあることを滲ませたものに感じられます。
