squirt

A British teen was suspended from school this week for selling his classmates squirts of hand sanitizer to protect them from contracting the coronavirus.

Oliver Cooper, 13, bought a tub of Johnson’s child handwash from a Tesco grocery store for £1.60 (about $2) after hearing about the coronavirus outbreak on the radio, Metro UK reported.

The young entrepreneur, who attends Dixon’s Unity Academy in Leeds, offered some to his friends, who suggested that he start a “business” on the playground selling squirts for 50 pence each (around 65 cents) to other kids, the outlet reported.

selling his classmates squirts of hand sanitizer

a squirt of hand sanitizer
two squirts of hand sanitizer

a squirt (of hand sanitizer)

It's official.

The coronavirus outbreak spreading across the world was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization as the global death toll rose above 4,300 and the number of confirmed cases exceeded 121,000 on Wednesday.

In the USA, the death toll is at 31 and the number of cases rolled past 1,000, federal health officials said. Cities have been locked down, large gatherings banned or postponed (sorry, Coachella) and countless people quarantined in their homes.

Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told lawmakers Wednesday that the USA has yet to see the worst of the coronavirus outbreak. “Bottom line: It’s going to get worse,” he said.
(Ashley Shaffer. They pushed the ‘pandemic’ button. USA Today. March 11, 2020.)

卑近な例として、panoramaやPan-Pacific、panacea(これは万能薬という意味で、ギリシア神話に出てくる治療の女神に由来しています)などがあります。

descend on

The toilet paper stockpiling craze sweeping Australia amid growing coronavirus fears is continuing to cause scenes of mayhem in supermarkets.

A video shared to Facebook on Sunday has revealed the intense moment Aldi shoppers descend on fresh toilet roll supplies, only to strip shelves clean in a matter of moments.

Security camera footage, posted online, showed hundreds of shoppers as they made a mad dash through a toilet paper aisle at an Aldi store in a desperate bid to ensure they were well covered.
(Emilia Mazza. Coronavirus toilet paper: Aldi shoppers madly descend on fresh supplies. News.com.au. March 10, 2020.)

shoppers descend on fresh toilet roll supplies

dough

He made away with a lot of doughnuts — but no dough.

A hatchet-wielding thief was only thinking with his stomach when he robbed an Oregon doughnut shop this weekend — stealing a box of treats but not a cent from the register, police said.

Christopher James, 40, allegedly barged into a Voodoo Doughnut location in downtown Portland around 3:40 a.m. Saturday, weapon in hand.

James jumped over the counter and began stuffing a box with doughnuts, Portland police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Allen told The Oregonian. Nothing else was taken, Allen said.
(Amanda Woods. Hungry thief steals doughnuts, leaves cash in Oregon heist: cops. New York Post. March 9, 2020.)

He made away with a lot of doughnuts — but no dough.

crack a joke

(CNN) — More than one in four men (28%) around the world think it's acceptable to crack sexual jokes at work, a new global survey has found.

In a survey of over 20,000 people in 27 countries, researchers from King's College London said they found "significant differences" in what men and women perceived to be acceptable workplace behavior.

A key finding was that more than one in eight men (13%) think it is acceptable to display material of a sexual nature at work, compared with just 7% of women, the poll, carried out by Ipsos MORI and The Global institute for Women's Leadership found [sic].

Some 16% of women thought it was acceptable to tell jokes or stories of a sexual nature at work, the study said.
(Amy Woodyatt. 1 in 4 men think it's OK to make sexual jokes at work, study finds. CNN. March 6, 2020.)

crack a joke
