OP

略語でOPというものがあります。ネットでよく使われる表現ですが、何のことかご存知でしょうか？

OPは、original posterを略したもので、ネット掲示板などでトピックを最初に投稿したユーザーのことを指すそうです。いわゆる、スレ主（スレッドの主；スレッドを立てた本人）とかトピ主（トピックを開始したユーザー）という日本語が相当します。

上記の記事を読んでいたのですが、途中からOPという略語が突然出てきたので面喰らいました。

The OP had to learn of her boyfriend’s impulsive decision to quit his job from their mutual friend.

実は突然にOPという略語が出てきたのではありませんでした。よく読むと、この前に以下のくだりがあり、OPが"original poster"の略であるらしいことは想像が付くものでしたが、読み飛ばしていました。

tighten one’s belt

このところめっきり外食しなくなりました。出勤の際は手弁当ですし、週末なども昼、夜いずれも、自宅です。

外食は高くつく、というのが正直なところです。値段を気にしながら食事するのもどうかと思うので、家で済ます、というのが定着している感がありますね。

アメリカ国内もインフレに伴う物価高は消費者にのしかかっており、やはり外食を敬遠する傾向にあるという記事を読みました。

US consumers are eating at home to save money as they worry about a slowing economy and stubbornly high prices, leading restaurant chains to warn of declining sales.

McDonald’s chief executive Chris Kempczinski said that while sales at the burger chain returned to growth last quarter, visits from low-income customers in particular fell by “double-digits” between April and June as their real incomes declined.

“The result of that is you’re seeing people either skip occasions, so they’re skipping . . . breakfast or they’re trading down either within our menu or they’re trading down to eating at home,” Kempczinski said.

客が来なければレストランの売上げに影響があるのは必至です。マクドナルドなどではまず最初に朝食の売上げにそれが現れるといいます。朝食を外で食べるのではなく、家で済ますようにするか、もしくは朝食抜きにする、というような倹約に走るからだそうです。

今日取り上げる表現、

tighten one’s belt

はベルトを締めるというのが字句通りの意味ですが，支出を切り詰めるという意味で使われる慣用表現です。

研究社新英和大辞典を引いてみると、

ベルトをきつくして空腹を紛らす（我慢する）

とあります。なるほど、と思いました。

倹約するという意味の慣用表現でよく似たものに、

tighten the purse strings 

というものがありますが、こちらは日本語でも「財布の紐が固い」などと言うように、お金を出し渋るということです。

"tighten one’s belt"に至っては、支出を切る詰めるために食べたいものも食べず、それを紛らすためにベルトを締めるというのは、哀れでさえあります。

もしかしたら、食べたいものを食べずに我慢した結果、痩せてベルトを締める結果になるというのかもしれません。

自慢ではありませんが、小生の腹回りは標準より10センチくらい細く、ベルトの穴は一番きついところになりますが、まだ締め足りない状況です。倹約は嫌いではありません（笑）

ハラチ、サンダル、そして草鞋 ー huarache

有名ブランドのアディダスのシューズが文化盗用（cultural appropriation）の批判を受け謝罪に追い込まれました。

問題になっているのはOaxaca Slip-Onという新商品でメキシコの伝統的なサンダルである"huaraches"をベースに有名デザイナーが企画したそうですが、これがメキシコ原住民の伝統的な手工芸品にタダ乗りしたものとの批判を招き、メキシコ大統領も同社に謝罪を求める事態に発展しているというものです。

US fashion designer Willy Chavarria has apologised after a shoe he created in collaboration with Adidas Originals was criticised for "cultural appropriation".

The Oaxaca Slip-On was inspired by traditional leather sandals known as huaraches made by Indigenous artisans in Mexico.

The Mexican president was among those who spoke out against the footwear, which was reportedly made in China without consultation or credit to the communities who originated the design.

メキシコの"huaraches"は平底に前足部の革の編上げが特徴的なサンダルです。英和辞書にもメキシコのサンダルという説明と共に載っています。「ハラチ」と発音するようです。

ところで、話が変わるようですが、小生のかつてのランニング仲間内に、普通のランニングシューズではなく、平底のソールをシンプルな編み紐で括りつけた草履のようなものを好むランナーがいました。それを「ワラーチ」と呼んでいましたが、これはメキシコのタラウマラ族という長距離走に長けたランナーが使うものとして知られます。

その見てくれに留まらず、名前（ワラーチ）も、日本語の「草鞋（わらじ）」によく似ています。残念ながら、語源的に結びつけるような説明は見当たりません。

"huaraches"も草鞋もいわゆるサンダル（sandal）に分類されるようです。

"sandal"を辞書で引くと、その起源はギリシャ・ローマにあるそうです。語源はラテン語sandalium、また遡るとギリシャ語sandalionにはヒラメ、カレイの意味もあるそうですが、これは平たいソール部分と関連するのでしょうか、それ以上の語源は不詳のようです。

footnote

ロシアとウクライナの停戦交渉は遅々として進まない感がありますが、先日よりアメリカとロシアがアラスカ州で首脳会談を行うというニュースが報じられ、行方が注目されています。

尤も、その会談にはウクライナのゼレンスキー大統領も「招待する」ということらしいのですが、領土に関してはロシアもウクライナも一歩も譲るつもりはないらしいとも報じられています。トランプ大統領は一部領土を交換する案などについても仄めかしているようですが、いつもながら当事国はもとより、関係国の頭越しに進めているという感もあります。

Ahead of the suddenly announced summit in Alaska on Friday between Putin and US President Donald Trump, one European diplomat, who declined to be named as they were not authorized to speak on the record, told CNN: “We are at risk of being a footnote in history.”

頭越しに物事が進んでいるという危機感は特に欧州各国に強いようです。先週、アメリカからウィトコフ大使がプーチン氏を訪問しましたが、ここにおいても米露主導で物事が進んでいます。

とある外交官は、

“We are at risk of being a footnote in history.”

と発言したとあります。危機感が滲んでいます。

"footnote"とは文書における脚注を指しますが、

Something related to but of lesser importance than a larger work or occurrence

(American Heritage Dictionary)

という意味があります。

文書における脚注というのは本文中の事項に対する補足のために添えられるものです。従って、相対的に重要性が低いもの、という含意が生じるものと思われます。

こうした意味合いで用いられる"footnote"をよく見かけます。

歴史の1ページに名を残す、とはよく言われることですが、脚注に終わることは良しとしないのでしょう。

eugenics

アメリカでジーンズの広告が物議を醸しているというニュースです。

記事を一読、またSNSに投稿されているCFも観てみました。人気女優を起用した、セクシーな内容の広告ですが、すぐには何が問題なのかよく分かりませんでした。

In one ad, Sweeney says, "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue," as the camera pans up to her face.

In another ad, posted on the company's social media, Sweeney is seen cleaning a photo of herself with the tagline "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Genes," with "genes" crossed out to instead read "jeans."

ジーンズ（jeans）を"genes"（遺伝子）に掛けているというのは分かりました。

CFの中では、親から子に受け継がれる遺伝というものがある、と女優に言わせていますが、まぁ、科学的には正しいと言えます。人格みたいなものも遺伝するでしょうし、髪の毛や目の色も多分そうでしょう。そこに続けて、「私のジーンズは青」、というパンチライン（！？）なのですが、やや飛躍しているでしょうか？

しかし、この広告に寄せられている批判コメントの多くは、CF中の女優の姿態が性的であるということの他、メッセージ内容が"eugenics"に傾倒しているということです。

"eugenicsを辞書で引くと、優生学とあります。その意味するところは、優れた特質のみが遺伝により継承されることで優秀な種が残るというものです。

記事では以下のようにあります。

 

Some critics of the ad campaign claim it promotes eugenics, a "scientifically inaccurate theory that humans can be improved through selective breeding of populations," according to the National Human Genome Research Institute.

Other critics say the campaign is hypersexualized and glorifies Sweeney's physique.

言われてみればそういう見方もあるかと思いました。

女優が青い目の白人ということと無関係ではないようです。"eugenics"傾倒だとの批判は、白人至上主義的だとの批判にもなっているようです。

また、トランプ大統領は件の女優が共和党員であることから、問題の広告を素晴らしい内容だと持ち上げているということです。ある意味、火に油を注いでいます。
