the first shoe to drop

WASHINGTON — A top communications aide to President Donald Trump is exiting the White House as the embattled president considers a broader shake-up amid rising anxiety over investigations into his campaign’s contacts with Russia.

Fresh off Trump’s first official trip abroad, White House communications director Michael Dubke announced his resignation Tuesday in what many inside and outside the White House see as the first shoe to drop. A wider overhaul is expected, aimed at more aggressively responding to allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and revelations of possible ties between Trump’s campaign and Moscow.

Dubke said in a statement it had been an honor to serve Trump and “my distinct pleasure to work side by side, day by day with the staff of the communications and press departments.”
(Top Trump aide exiting: First shoe to drop in wider shuffle? The Washington Post. May 30, 2017.)

the first shoe to drop

"another shoe has dropped"のエピソード曰く、最初に床に落とした靴は階下で寝ている住民を目覚めさせ、もう片方の靴が落ちてくるのがいつになるのかと不安な気持ちにさせたということですから、"the first shoe to drop"はこれから起きる良くない一連の出来事の「一発目」、ということにでもなりましょうか。

lido

Samantha Martin, a publicist, wraps up her workday by sending one last e-mail, shutting her laptop — and heading up to the lido deck, where she’ll recharge, poolside, while her co-workers finish up in their Midtown office.

The 46-year-old is one of many New Yorkers who’ve discovered the joys of living and working on a cruise ship, for weeks or months at a time. Contrary to the stereotype of cruise aficionados being retirees, people in their 20s, 30s and 40s have embraced this lifestyle as a way to see the world and take a break from NYC’s crushing cost of living.
(Anna Davies. Why these couples are leaving NYC to live on cruise ships. New York Post. May 27, 2017.)

lido deck, poolside

dirigible

Google co-founder Sergey Brin reportedly has plans to build a $100 million-plus blimp.

It would be the largest aircraft in the world and would be used for humanitarian missions, getting supplies, food and other necessities to hard-to-reach areas around the globe, according to the Guardian. Known to love dirigibles, Brin would use the blimp, which could cost as much as $150 million, for personal travel, too.

Google declined to comment.
(Zlati Meyer. Google co-founder to build $100M+ blimp: Report. USA Today. May 28, 2017.)

dirigible

For 17 years, Ajibola and Adeboye Taiwo tried to have a child but had no luck.

Until now — times six.

Ajibola Taiwo gave birth to sextuplets this month at a Richmond hospital, and doctors said the three boys and three girls, along with their mother, are doing well. It is the first time sextuplets have been born at VCU Medical Center, officials said.
(Dana Hedgpeth. Sextuplets born in Virginia to couple who spent 17 years trying to conceive a child. The Washington Post. May 25, 2017.)

sextuplet

decuplet

declutter

A new update to Google Photos will now let you archive photos from the main feed and hide them away, helping you declutter and privatize some personal photos. First spotted by 9to5Google, all you have to do is hold the photo(s) and hit the “...” menu on the right side to bring up the archive option. Later, when you want to revisit those photos, you can find them on the left side menu under a separate folder.

While it might not seem as buzzworthy as, say, Instagram’s implementation of it on a user profile, it is great if you share a library with a significant other or family members and don’t want certain images just floating about in the main feed.
(Natt Garun. Google Photos now makes it easy to hide your nudes. The Verge. May 24, 2017.)
