先月の投稿でも取り上げたところですが、米国経済現況において目下"affordability"、つまりインフレ、物価高に影響を受ける国民の経済的余裕度という点が問題になっています。

これに対してトランプ大統領は、関税引き上げなどの政策により国内経済は上向きであるとの主張を展開していますが、現実認識のギャップが鮮明になっています。

トランプ氏は米国の経済現況を「A+++++」と自画自賛しました。

The president gave himself those top marks earlier this week at the White House in an interview with POLITICO’s Dasha Burns as cost of living concerns have become a persistent liability for the GOP. “I don’t see things as great at all. I don’t even see it as an A,” said one former senior administration official — who still holds close ties with the White House — granted anonymity to speak candidly.

Douglas Holtz-Eakin, chief economist on former President George W. Bush’s Council of Economic Advisers and later director of the Congressional Budget Office, told West Wing Playbook he would give Trump’s economy “a gentleman’s C.”

“Fair growth, not great labor market, inflation problem — it’s hard to get an A+++ out of that,” he added.

学校などでの成績評価でAからD（あるいはE、F）というようにランク付けする場合の最上位がAですが、そのさらに上がA +でしょう。トランプ氏の自己評価「A+++++」については、恐らくそのようなランクは実際には無いと思われますが、さらにその上、最上位という主張かと思われます。誇大表現を好むトランプ氏らしい主張です。

この自画自賛には一般庶民はもとより、経済専門家も疑問を投げかけており、妥当な評価としては、

a gentleman’s C

だろう、との見立てが紹介されています。この"gentleman’s C"とはどういう意味なのでしょうか？

成績表のランク付けにおいて、"C"は中間あたりに位置付けられます。ランクDは通例、「落第」とされるところ、ランクCは合格、「及第点」となります。

この"gentleman’s C"というのは、本来ならDの判定、つまり落第であるところ、諸々の点を考慮して、かろうじて合格、という意味合いの表現なのだそうです。「諸々の点」とは評価対象者の出自や社会的なステータスなどを考慮したものであり、本来ならば不合格であるが、社会的な地位に配慮して、とりあえず合格にせざるを得ない、という事情が滲みます。つまり、"gentleman’s"にはそうした皮肉が込められているということになります。

ランダムハウス英和辞書はこの表現のエントリがあり、

育ちのよさに免じての合格点

という訳を載せています。

serif

米国で公文書等に用いる文字のフォントをTimes New Romanに統一する旨の通達が出されたそうです。

お仕事でMicrosoft社のWordなどの文書作成ソフトを使う方には馴染みのある名前かと思います。

実のところ、公文書に用いる文字のフォントはバイデン政権下において、Calibriというフォントが使われるようになっていました。

このCalibriというフォントは視覚障害を持つ人にとってより読みやすいフォントとして採用されたという経緯があったのです。

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered diplomats to return to using Times New Roman font instead of Calibri, reversing a change made under the Biden administration.

Rubio's predecessor Antony Blinken had adopted Calibri in 2023, saying it was more accessible for people with visual disabilities. But Rubio said this was a "wasteful" diversity move and that Times New Roman was "more formal and professional".

前政権による決定を覆すような今回の決定は、共和党が毛嫌いする"wokeness"があるようです。バイデン民主党政権はいわゆるDE&I（ダイバーシティ、平等、インクルージョン）を推進してきましたが、Calibriフォントの採用もその一環だというのです。

たかがフォント、されど・・・、とも思わされる一件です。

ところで、これらのフォント、具体的に何が違うのでしょうか？

Times New Roman is a serif font, which means it has small lines that stem from the ends of the letters. Courts, legislatures, and other agencies typically use the more formal-appearing font. Calibri is a sans serif font, without those lines, and is considered easier to read on screens, especially for those with vision or reading impairments.

その違いとは"serif"の有り、無しという点にあります。

この"serif"とは何でしょうか？Merriam-Webster Dictionary では、

any of the short lines stemming from and at an angle to the upper and lower ends of the strokes of a letter

と定義されており、文字のストロークの端点に付いているヒゲ（短い線）のことであると定義されています。文字の一画一画の「留め」、「はね」みたいなものであると言えるでしょうか。

この"serif"の有り、無しが視覚障害者の方の読み易さに関わるとは知りませんでした。別記事によれば、OCR（光学式文字読取装置）における文字の認識精度にも影響するそうです。

Times New Romanは"serif"のあるフォント、Calibriは無いフォント、"sans serif"となります。

"serif"という語はオランダ語から来ているようですが、遡ると「書く」という意味のラテン語動詞scribereに由来するそうです。

latrine-lipped

英語の罵り言葉（expletives）といえば、いわゆる"four-letter word"がまず思い浮かびます。

英語国民のうち、この"four-letter word"を最も頻繁に使うのはアメリカ人で、イギリス人、オーストラリア人、と続くそうです。フィンランドの研究者による報告だそうです。

When it comes to expletives, US citizens are the most prolifically profane. Finnish researchers found that Americans drop more f-bombs than their UK counterparts, while Australians are the most creative in their use of the ultimate four-letter word, per a study published in the journal Lingua.

They found that US citizens used “f–k” the most frequently, followed by Brits, then lastly, Australians, contrary to the perception of the Aussies as being particularly latrine-lipped.

“The low frequency of f–k in the Australian data are surprising, as Australians are often perceived as prolific swearers,” the team exclaimed.

引用記事によると、オーストラリア人が3番手というのは意外な結果だとあります。というのも、オーストラリア人は、

latrine-lipped

だというのが大方の一致するところだからだそうです。

"latrine-lipped"という表現を初めて見ましたが、口汚い、という意味だそうです。

"latrine"とはトイレのことで、それも共同の便所を指すもので、つまり掃除が行き届かなくて汚いのが当たり前みたいなトイレのことです。

aura farming

昨日の投稿でOxford Dictionaryの2025年の1語に選出されたという、"rage bait"という表現を取り上げました。

Word of the Yearに関しては複数の辞書出版社が独自の基準で毎年発表していますが、その年の1語に選出される単語がある一方で、次点となった表現、選出されなかった単語、表現というのも興味深いものです。

Oxford Dictionaryによれば、最終選考には3つの表現が残ったようですが、次点となったのは、

aura farming

という表現だそうです。

"rage bait"という表現の意味するところについては、記事の解説を読む前から大体わかっていました。一方、"aura farming"については初めて聞くもので、意味も想像がつきませんでした。

やはり2025年に流行った表現のようですが、この表現を取り上げた今年半ばくらいの記事を引用します。

Aura farming is all about cultivating the coolest version of yourself. Think well-tailored suits, lots of grayscale, serious stares and sharp angles.

この説明を読むと、"aura farming"とは自分自身をよく見せる、クールさを演出するための努力、みたいなところかと思われます。

他人に対して、自分の好印象を植え付けたいという本能的な欲求は誰にでもあろうかと思います。

そうした欲求は現代においてはネット、とりわけSNS上でいやがうえにも増幅されているのではないでしょうか。

It refers to actively curating your personality by choosing the way you look, behaving a certain way, and associating yourself with things that make you desirable, interesting and appear effortlessly cool. It is like cultivating a charisma, an aura, especially on digital mediums.

SNSのタイムラインを覗けば、"rage bait"がある一方、投稿者自身を見栄えの良い写真や動画と共にこれでもかとアピールする投稿に溢れています。

結局のところ、"aura farming"も如何にSNSで「勝ち組」となるか、という心理を映し出したインターネット時代の単語（表現）なのだと思いました。

なお、"aura"とはカリスマ（charisma）、それを"farm"するとは、耕す、飼育する、世話する、という意味ですが、"farm"にはビデオゲームにおいてポイントを稼ぐためのアクション（しばしば単純で反復的）を繰り返す、という意味あり、そこから来ているもののようです。

自身のカリスマのためには写真や動画を「盛る」努力はかかせません・・・。

"aura farming"という表現には多少の皮肉が込められていると言えます。

rage bait

今年ももうそんな時期・・・です。英語辞典の総本山といえるOxford Dictionaryが2025年の1語を発表しました。

その1語は、

rage bait

です。

"rage"とは怒り、"bait"は餌（エサ）のことですが、SNSなどにおいて、怒りや負の感情を引き起こすような内容の投稿でアクセスを増加させることを指します。

Don't get too upset, but 'rage bait' has been named by Oxford University Press as this year's Word of the Year, beating other online terms.

The group behind the Oxford English Dictionary says the term is a noun which describes online content "deliberately designed to elicit anger or outrage" to boost traffic or engagement.

Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford Languages, said that "the fact that the word rage bait exists and has seen such a dramatic surge in usage means we're increasingly aware of the manipulation tactics we can be drawn into online".

He added: "Before, the internet was focused on grabbing our attention by sparking curiosity in exchange for clicks, but now we've seen a dramatic shift to it hijacking and influencing our emotions, and how we respond.

インターネットは近年ではSNSの全盛期となり、投稿に対するインプレッションにより利益を得るユーザーは競うように過激な内容の投稿を行うことが問題になっています。

人々の感情を煽り、アクセストラフィックを稼ぐこうした投稿を"rage bait"と呼び始めたのはかなり以前、2002年頃から確認されるということですが、近年用例として急増していることから、今年の1語に選出されたということです。

"rage bait"に似た表現に、

clickbait

があります。こちらもネットのユーザーのクリック（アクセス）を誘導するような思わせぶりな見出しや内容の情報を指しますが、当ブログで取り上げたのは10年以上前、2014年のことでした。

最近の"rage bait"はAI（人工知能）により生成された真実と見紛うような内容もあり、巧妙さが増していると言えます。

ipso facto

今年3月、米国のイエメンに対する軍事作戦の詳細がSignalという通信アプリでやり取りされ、その内容が誤ってマスメディア関係者に共有されたという問題がありました。

軍事最高機密の漏洩と言えるスキャンダルはSignalgate（Signal + -gate）と呼ばれ、トランプ政権の国家安全保障担当が解任される事態になりましたが、ヘグセス国防長官の責任も問われていたところ、国防総省監察官による最終的な調査報告書がこのほどリリースされたとのニュースです。

ヘグセス国防長官は報告書の内容に触れ、機密情報の漏洩は無かった、故に自身の責任は無い、との主張を展開したようです。

この責任逃れともいえる態度は報道各社からの批判を呼んでいます。

報告書ではヘグセス国防長官らのやり取りした情報の機密性については明確な言及を避けているようですが、その情報が外部に漏れることで米軍を危険に晒す可能性があったと結論付けているからです。

特に、軍事作戦に関する情報をプライベートの端末を用いてやり取りしたことはルールに反すると指摘しています。

The crucial part:

“… If this information had fallen into the hands of U.S. adversaries, Houthi forces might have been able to counter U.S. forces or reposition personnel and assets to avoid planned U.S. strikes,” the report says. “Even though these events did not ultimately occur, the Secretary’s actions created a risk to operational security that could have resulted in failed U.S. mission objectives and potential harm to U.S. pilots.”

Also importantly, even as Hegseth might not have shared technically classified information, he was still breaking the rules. The IG says he “did not comply with DoD Instruction 8170.01,” because he used his personal phone and shared nonpublic information on the app.

Ipso facto, Hegseth violated the rules, and that violation risked “harm to U.S. pilots.”

"ipso facto"というフレーズが目に留まりました。

一見してラテン語のフレーズと分かりますね。英語にすると、

by the fact itself

となります。事実それ自身によって、という訳になります。

trash

米バージニア州で、閉店後の酒店に一匹のアライグマが侵入、店内を荒らした挙句、酔っぱらって大の字になって寝ているのを出勤した店員が発見したというニュースが話題です。

店内は棚から落ちて割れてしまった酒瓶が散乱した状態だったそうで、アライグマはそれを飲んで酔っ払ってしまったと考えられるということです。

He was trashed!

A “very intoxicated” raccoon went on a drunken rampage inside a Virginia liquor store — then passed out face-first in the bathroom, local officials said.

The masked bandit was found snoozing in a booze-induced haze by the toilet Saturday morning after trashing the Ashland ABC Store, leaving behind a trail of broken liquor bottles, disheveled shelves, and toppled boxes, according to the Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter.

さて、引用した記事には"trash"という単語が出てきます。

"trash"とは、くず、がらくたを意味する名詞ですが、動詞の意味には、

手当たり次第に壊す（= vandalize）

というものがあるとは知りませんでした。

また、引用記事の冒頭にも"trash"が使われており、"He was trashed!"の"He"とは他ならぬアライグマを指していますが、ここでの"trashed"は俗語の表現で、

Drunk or intoxicated.

Extremely tired; exhausted.

(American Heritage Dictionary)

という意味であり、つまりは酔っぱらっている、ぐったりしている、という意味です。これも知りませんでしたねぇ。

R-word

トランプ大統領の口汚さは今に始まったことではありませんが、その発言（SNSへの投稿内容）がまた物議を醸しています。

問題はトランプ氏がミネソタ州知事の移民対策を批判する中で"R-word"を使ったということです。

House Speaker Mike Johnson appeared a bit flummoxed when a reporter asked him on Dec. 2 for his thoughts on President Donald Trump's recent use of the R-word to describe Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Trump used the slur in a Truth Social social media post on Thanksgiving while accusing the governor of letting "refugees from Somalia" take over the state and commit fraud. When asked by reporters three days later about the word, Trump responded, "Do you have a problem with it?"

While the word was introduced as a medical term in 1961, it has evolved over the decades to become a slur used to demean people with and without disabilities. Disability advocates seek to end its use.

人前で使うのが憚られる言葉の中に、いわゆるF-wordと呼ばれるものや、黒人差別につながるN-wordなどがあるということは知っていましたが、"R-word"が何を指すのかについては知りませんでした。

こういった差別表現を取り上げるニュース記事の常として、具体的にどのような表現、言葉が問題になったのかが分からないことが多いのですが、引用したUSA Today紙の記事もそうで、"R-word"が何なのかについては一切触れていません。

他の記事を当たると、果たして"R-word"とは、

retard、あるいは、retarded

であることが分かりました。日本語で言うところの「知恵遅れ」という意味です。

Trump referred to Mr. Walz — whom former Vice President Kamala Harris tapped over Mr. Shapiro as a running mate last year — as “seriously retarded,” a word widely considered a slur including by the Special Olympics.

The president accused Mr. Walz of doing “nothing, either through fear, incompetence, or both” in the wake of a fraud scandal involving Somali immigrants charged with stealing from government programs during the pandemic.

トランプ大統領はミネソタ州知事のウォルズ氏が十分な移民対策ができていないと批判し、"retarded"の烙印を押したということなのです。

"retard"、"retarded"という言葉は、かつては医学用語であったものの、今日においては差別語であるとされています。

日本語においても「知恵遅れ」にはネガティヴな響きがあるため、「発達障害」といった言葉に置き換えるのが適切とされていると思います。

手元にあるOxford Dictionary of Euphemismでは、

Retarded is educational jargon used to describe a person with a congenital etc. inability learn.

と説明されています。

2010年、オバマ政権下で成立したRosa’s lawでは、"mental retardation"という言葉を差別語とし、"intellectual disability"という表現に置き換えることを定めています。

on a knife-edge

中米のホンジュラスの大統領選挙の行方に注目が集まっています。

野党候補の2人が争う構図だということですが、現時点での票差は僅か515票余りという接戦です。

Early results in the Honduras general election show the two leading presidential candidates are locked in a "technical tie", the country's electoral authority has said.

Right-wing candidate Nasry Asfura leads former TV host Salvador Nasralla by just 515 votes, the President of the National Electoral Council (CNE) Ana Paola Hall said in a post on X.

Hall also called for "patience and prudence" adding that the manual count of ballot papers was still underway.

記事のタイトルでは、

Honduras election on a knife edge…

とあります。ここで使われている、"on a knife-edge"という表現は、

（事の成否が）きわどい状況で

という意味であると研究社新英和大辞典にあります。

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsでは、

If someone or something is on a knife-edge, they are in a situation in which nobody knows what is going to happen next.

とあり、イギリス英語でよく使われる表現であるとの解説です。

また、

You can also say that someone walks a knife-edge.

ともあります。

ナイフの切先の上に足を置いて歩くかのような状況、見ている側は一体どうなってしまうのかとハラハラしますが、そういった状況を喩えた表現と言えます。

この大統領選ではトランプ米大統領が右派候補への支持を表明し、もし敗れるようまことがあれば同国への経済支援を止めるという発言が選挙介入との批判を呼んでいるとのことです。

また、近年、中南米諸国は中国の圧力により台湾との断交を決定、ホンジュラスも同様でしたが、野党候補の2人は国交回復を主張しているとのことで、その観点からも同国民のみならず世界各国が状況を見守っているという状況です。

シード ー seed

スポーツの用語で「シード」という言葉があります。この「シード」は英語では"seed"、つまりタネ（種子）のことなんですが、トーナメント戦などにおいて対戦の組み合わせを調整することで、強豪同士が早い回で対戦しないようにすることを指します。

アメリカの女子バレーボール競技の関連記事からの引用です。（特に興味がある訳でもなく、詳しくもないのですが・・・。）

Volleyball seeds the top-eight teams in each region and the top four serve as first- and second-round hosts. The rest of the bracket is filled out to balance it competitively and geographically. 上記の引用では、"seed"が動詞と名詞の両方で出てきます。また、"seeding(s)"という語も記事タイトルに見えます。

対戦チームの組み合わせを調整することをなぜ"seed"と表現するようになったのか、その由来はテニス競技にあるそうです。

Sporting (originally tennis) sense is by 1898, from the notion of "spreading" certain players' names so as to ensure they will not meet early in a tournament.

そして、"seed"という動詞は種を蒔く、という意味ですが、強いプレイヤー、チームを（種を蒔くように）ばらけさせることからそういいようになった模様です。

名詞としての意味、つまりシードされたチーム、プレイヤーということですが、これは動詞の意味から発展したものだそうです。

「シード校」という表現がありますが、「シード」された、すなわち強豪と見做される学校（チーム）という意味合いですね。

フライドチキン ー fried chicken

グーグルニュースのヘッドラインを斜め読みしていましたら、有名ゴルファーの訃報を伝える記事に目が留まりました。

私自身ゴルフに詳しくなく、またやりませんので、こうした記事はスルーすることが多いのですが、興味深い内容でしたので取り上げました。

Two-time major winner Fuzzy Zoeller has died at the age of 74.

Born Frank Urban Zoeller Jr, the American clinched the 1979 Masters in a play-off to become the first player since 1935 to win the tournament on his debut - and the last.

However, Zoeller was involved in controversy in 1997 over remarks he made about Tiger Woods.

After Woods won the Masters, which entitled him to choose the Champions Dinner menu for the following year, Zoeller said: "You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year.

"Got it? Or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve."

Zoeller later apologised and said his words had been misconstrued.

74歳で亡くなったアメリカ人プロゴルファーのゼラー氏はメジャー大会で2度の優勝を飾ったということですが、ライバルでもあったタイガー・ウッズ氏に対する差別的な発言で批判を受けたようで、本人は人生最大の汚点であったと悔いていたそうです。

どんな差別的発言をしてしまったのか、当然気になるところです。

記事によれば、1997年にウッズ氏がマスターズで優勝した際のゼラー氏によるコメントが問題になったようです。

優勝したウッズ氏には翌年のトーナメントのディナーメニューを決める栄誉が与えられるというところ、ゼラー氏は、

You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year.

と言い放ったとされ、これが問題になったようです。

ディナーメニューに「フライドチキン」は選ばないように、という発言が何故問題なのか、分かりませんでした。

それで他の記事などを読んでみますと、"fried chicken"という食べ物には有色人種、特に黒人と結び付けられる、ある種のステレオタイプがあることを知った次第です。

実のところ、"fried chicken"はアフリカ系アメリカ人に愛され、ニューヨークなどの大都市においてもハーレム地区などではこれを売りにする人気店が軒を連ねるそうです。

こうした背景から、"fried chicken"は暗に黒人であることを揶揄するようなコンテクストで使われたりすることがあるということなのです。

ウッズ氏は黒人の父親を持つアメリカ生まれです。

ウッズ氏に対して差別的発言をしたのはゼラー氏に留まりません。スペインのプロゴルファーSergio Garcia氏も2013年にウッズ氏に関連して"fried chicken"という言葉を使ったことが批判を呼び、のちに謝罪しています。

I have a confession. I'm an African-American and I love fried chicken. I like my chicken with collard greens, and macaroni and cheese.

I have white friends who love the same Southern fried combination. They are writers, academics, editors, golfers, truck drivers, doctors, hunters, fishermen, barbecue joint owners and guys who like to watch SEC football on Saturday afternoons with a can of beer in their laps.

I could have told Sergio Garcia all of this had I been at the European Tour awards dinner on Tuesday night near London, when he quipped that he would serve fried chicken if his sworn enemy, Tiger Woods, came over for dinner.

「フライドチキン」といえば日本でもお馴染みのファーストフードです。私自身、人気のチェーン店には行きませんけれども、鶏の唐揚げをはじめとするチキン料理は好きです。クリスマスシーズンを迎えるこれからの時期に消費も増加しますが、"fried chicken"という言葉が差別的に解釈される可能性のあるものとは不勉強にして知りませんでした。

femicide

イタリア議会で"femicide"を処罰する法案が可決されたと報じられています。

"femicide"とはなんでしょうか？そのスペルから女性（female）の殺人（homicide）を指すのだろうと想像がつきます。果たして、"femicide"とは"the murder of a woman"、そして終身刑が科されるとのことです。人を殺めれば重罪というのは当たり前では、と思いました。

法案が議会に提出された背景には、イタリア国内で増加している女性への暴力や殺害事件があるということです。2年前、当時大学生であった女性が元ボーイフレンドに刺殺され、その死体が遺棄された事件が法案提出の機運を高めたとの説明があります。

よって、"femicide"とは、パートナーや恋人などごく親しい関係にある男性による女性の殺害という定義になるようです。

日本においても元交際相手による殺害事件、ストーカー事案などが増加していると聞きます。いずれ、日本でも"femicide"という概念が導入されることになるのかとも思います。

ちょうど先日11月25日は、女性に対する暴力撤廃の国際デー（The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women）でしたが、それに合わせての法案可決であったということです。

6-7 (six-seven)

今年、ネットを中心にバズった英語表現に、

6-7

というものがあります。テキストでは、"6-7"、あるいは"6 7"、あるいは"67"などと表記のバリエーションがあるようですが、"six-seven"（つまり、sixty-sevenではない）と発音される表現です。

イギリスのスターマー首相が小学校を視察したというニュース記事をお読みください。

It has become the bane of many parents’ and teachers’ existence: children bleating out “six seven” for apparently no reason.

So parents of pupils at Welland Academy in Peterborough will be unimpressed to discover that none other than the prime minister was encouraging their youngsters in the viral phenomenon.

視察先の学校で生徒が流行の"six seven"という言葉を使ったのに首相が呼応したということですが、これに多くの反発が寄せられ、首相も謝罪、という、一読ではよく分からない内容です。

記事の冒頭では、子供がやたらとこの表現を使いたがる状況に、親や教師はいささか困惑しているということのようです。

そもそも、"six seven"とは何を意味するのでしょうか？同記事にはこの表現の由来の説明として以下のようにあります。

The phrase “six-seven” appears to originate with the Philadelphia rapper Skrilla’s 2024 track Doot Doot (6 7), in which it’s either a reference to police radio code, or 67th Street.

But it really went viral when the song was repeatedly used to soundtrack video clips of the NBA basketball star LaMelo Ball, who is 6ft 7in.

上記では、この表現がラップ音楽の歌詞に由来するということについては書かれていますが、"six seven"が具体的に何を意味するかについては不明ですね。

結論から言うと、"six seven"の意味は特に明確なものはないようなのですが、何故か（あるいは、それ故に？）ネットでバズり、Dictionary.comの今年の1語（Word of the Year）になったとあります。

"six seven"という表現には特定の意味はなく、対話の受け答えの内容としては曖昧で、状況次第で何とでも取れる多機能な（！？）言葉のようです。

こういう流行語に親や先生がフラストレーションを感じるというのはよくある話ですかね・・・。

civility

日本では勤労感謝の日の3連休でしたね。アメリカでは今週木曜日がThanksgiving Dayとなりますが、年末クリスマスを前にした一大ホリデーで飛行機を利用した大移動が予想される時期を前に、米運輸省が「マナーアップキャンペーン」を公表しました。

The U.S. Department of Transportation is launching what it's calling a "civility campaign" to promote good behavior on flights and at airports, as the busy holiday travel season gets underway. The department is naming the campaign "The Golden Age of Travel Starts with You" and announced the effort in a press release last week.

The DOT shared a minute-and-a-half video that begins with images of airline travelers of decades past, set to Frank Sinatra's "Come Fly With Me." The video then shifts abruptly to tense music and video clips of bare feet swiping on an in-flight monitor and then a series of brawls on flights.

というのも、アメリカ国内で空港、飛行機を利用する客のマナーというのが大きな問題になっている訳で、機内でのケンカや、空港職員に対する暴言、暴力、子供の躾けなど、枚挙に暇がないというのは、キャンペーンのビデオを見ると分かります。

さて、「マナーアップキャンペーン」と書きましたが、記事中の英語表現は、

civility campaign

です。"civility"という単語は礼儀正しさ、丁重さを意味します。英単語の"manner"（通例、manners）にも行儀作法、エティケットの意味はありますが、"civility"には最低限の丁重さ、慇懃という含みがあるようです。

"civility"は名詞ですが、形容詞である"civil"と共に、ラテン語で市民を意味するcivisを語源としています。同じくラテン語で形容詞であるcivilisにも、丁寧な、という意味合いがあります。

ラテン語civilisは、市民という身分に相応しい身の振る舞い、という含意があったようです。ラテン語civisの指す「市民」とは特にローマ市民（civis Romanus）を指す言葉でもありますが、礼儀作法はローマ市民としての矜持でもあったのかも知れません。

米運輸省のマナーアップキャンペーンのビデオを見ると、最低限の礼儀作法の啓発をせざるを得なかった苦渋の決断が見えるようです。礼儀正しい日本人で良かった・・・。

クーデター企図の罪で懲役27年の判決を受けていたブラジルのボルソナロ元大統領が、自宅軟禁中に逃亡を企てたとして逮捕されたと報じられています。

Brazil’s former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro has claimed he tried to damage his electronic ankle monitor “out of curiosity” after he was arrested at his villa owing to suspicions he was poised to abscond.

In a video released by the supreme court, Bolsonaro – who was recently sentenced to 27 years in prison for masterminding a military coup – can be heard admitting to a security official that he had used a soldering iron to tamper with the black tag.

2022年の大統領選では左派政党のルラ候補（現大統領）に僅差で敗れましたが、選挙の無効を訴えていました。懲役27年の判決後は自宅軟禁されていましたが、所在を把握するため足首に装着されるタグを破壊しようとした疑いが持たれているようです。

実際ボルソナロ元大統領はタグを壊そうとしたようですが、

を使ったとあります。"soldering iron"が何を指すのか分からなかったのですが、"solder"とは「はんだ」のこと、"soldering iron"は「はんだごて」を指す英語でした。

読者のみなさんの中には「はんだ」と聞いて、「何それ？」と思う人もいるかもしれません。

小生は「はんだごて」を持っていますよ。

「はんだ」というのは電子工作などで回路の接点を溶接するのに使う、鉛を成分とする材料のことです。「はんだごて」は熱して「はんだ」を溶かすのに使います。

父親がラジオ工作の類が好きで、幼い頃から工具箱やその中に入っている「はんだごて」は身近な存在でした。「はんだ」と聞くと、溶かした時の特有のにおい（ヤニのにおい）が甦ってきます。

「はんだ」を指す"solder"ですが、"solid"という単語と語源を同一にします。

ブッシュ政権で副大統領を務めたチェイニー氏（11月3日死去）の葬儀がワシントンD.C.で行われたという記事からの引用です。

米国の政界リーダーが一堂に会する機会となった訳ですが、

"who’s who"は英和辞書で紳士録、名士録などと訳されています。著名人、有名人のリストということですが、ここでは有力者らの集合というような意味合いです。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは以下のような定義がされています。

2: the leaders of a group : ELITE

3: a listing or grouping of notable persons or things

現職のトランプ大統領とヴァンス副大統領は欠席したそうです。

辞書を眺めていたら、

というエントリも目に留まりました。こちらは「物故者録」と訳されていました。故に、"who’s who"とは今生きている人に限定されるということになろうかと思います。

トランプ大統領が女性記者を口汚く罵ったという記事を読みました。

トランプ氏の口の悪さ、特にトランプ氏がフェイクニュース、フェイクメディアと攻撃する左派系メディアに対する罵倒は今に始まったことではないのですが、エプスタイン事件に関連する質問をしたブルームバーグの女性記者に対し、"Quiet, piggy"と言い放ったという動画はSNSなどで拡散し、批判が高まっているそうです。

引用したのは英ガーディアン紙のオピニオン記事ですが、トランプ氏の暴言を、

と分析しています。

ここで使われている、"on the back foot"というフレーズですが、

If someone is on the back foot, or if something puts them on the back foot, they feel threatened and act defensively.

と定義されており、守勢に立たされている、不利な立場にある、というような意味合いと解釈されます。手元にある辞書には載っていないようでした。

先日行われたニューヨーク市長選や州知事選などでの連敗、エプスタイン事件を巡っては自身の関与をほのめかす新たな文書の公開の可能性など、トランプ氏にとっては厳しい状況がこのところ続いています。

女性記者のトランプ氏に対する質問というのは、何もやましいところが無いのならば何故エプスタイン事件関連の文書に反対するのか、というものでした。

やましいところがあるからカッとなったのだろうと思われても仕方ないですね・・・。

wax

トランプ大統領はワシントンD.C.で開催されたマクドナルド主催の会合でスピーチを行い、米国内経済の再生における成果を強調したそうです。

第二次トランプ政権では関税政策により米国内経済を潤すと目論むも、現実はインフレ、物価高による"affordability"の問題が声高に言われています。

とあるのですが、ここで使われている動詞"wax"の用法が気になりましたので取り上げました。

ご存知のように"wax"とはカタカナで「ワックス」、艶や光沢を出すために塗る蝋のことです。また、別語源の動詞"wax"には月が満ちる、（大きさなどが）増大するという意味があります。記事で使われている"wax"はこれらいずれの意味合いとも合わないようです。

知らなかったのですが、動詞の"wax"の意味合いには以下のようなものがあるのです。

ランダムハウス英和では、古語として、しだいに（・・・に）なる、という意味が載っています。

記事の用例では、

wax lyrical

とありますが、"lyrical"は形容詞であり、文法的な解釈では、"wax"は自動詞、"lyrical"は補語ということになるかと思います。

"lyric"とは叙情詩という意味ですが、"wax lyrical"の言わんとするところはつまりスピーチの内容が詩的なトーン（調子）を帯びた、ということかと思います。（話の内容が詩的なトーンを帯びる、とは分かったような分からないような感じもしますが、ランダムハウス英和では「非常に熱心な」という訳語をあてています。）

このような"wax"の用法を見るのは初めてだったのですが、コーパスで検索すると、"wax lyrical"を始め、

Luddite

今年2025年はパソコンのOSウィンドウズ95が発売されて30年という年です。日本での発売は1995年11月23日で、日付が変わる深夜0時前から秋葉原の電気店前に人だかりができ、カウントダウンの大騒ぎという映像を見て隔世の感がありました。

時代は大きく変わり、ウィンドウズこそまだ残ってはいますが、スマホ全盛時代となりました。街ではまだ年端も行かない幼い子供らがスマホを操っているのを目にします。

親御にしてみれば、子供のスマホ使用時間というものは頭痛の種であります。デジタルデトックスという言葉が使われ始めて久しいですが、デジタル機器から一定期間距離を置くデジタルデトックスキャンプというのがアメリカでは人気のようです。（参加費用は何と、1人あたり8,000ドル！）

"Luddite"というのは人の名前らしく、19世紀始め、ちょうど産業革命の頃でしょうか、働いていた織物工場で自動化機械が導入されることに反発し、機械を壊して抵抗したという“伝説的”イギリス人だと英和辞書にあります。世界史年表では、ラッダイトの一揆（1811〜12年）と載っています。

機械が職人の雇用を奪う、そんなものは破壊せねばならない・・・。現代のAI（人工知能）に通じるものがあるでしょうか。

このラッダイトさんの名前はその後、新しいものや技術革新の持つ負の側面に対して異を唱える主義主張を指す表現として定着しています。

rub and tug

政財界の大物、果ては英王室までも巻き込んだ一大スキャンダルとなっているエプスタイン事件で、売春斡旋の罪で収監中に自殺したエプスタイン氏が残していた電子メールなどの関連文書が新たに公開されたようです。

念の為、本日の内容は成人向けです。

文書中に記載された生々しいやり取りのくだりに、

とあります。

エプスタイン氏が食い物にした女性に支払った対価と思われる記載ですが、"rub and tug"とは何を指すのでしょうか？

"rub"とは擦る、摩擦する、"tug"とは引っ張る、といった意味ですが、直後に"no sex…"とあり、性的な行為を指すものであることは想像が付くところです。

英和辞典の類にこの"rub and tug"という表現は載っていませんが、"rub off"には男性器に対する性的なマッサージを指す意味合いがあるらしく（Oxford Dictionary of Euphemisms）・・・。

一方、"tug"とは何を引っ張る、引くというのか？あまり詳しく書くのも憚られるのですが、"rub and tug"とは性的なマッサージを指す表現として定着しているようです。

真面目な小生は利用したことなどないと断っておきますが、日本にもエステ店とかマッサージ、リフレなどと謳い、オプションとしてこういったサービスを提供する風俗店があると聞いたことはあります。英語では、"rub and tug establishment"、"rub n' tug joint"などと称されるようです。

Wash your mouth out with soap.

言葉の意味というものは時代と共に少しずつ変わって行くもの、変遷していくものですが、ある表現に対する受け止め方というのも時代により変わってくるもののようです。相手を罵倒するような表現、つまり口汚い言葉遣いに対する受け止め方は世代により違うという話なんですが、英語でいわゆるfour-letter wordsと呼ばれる罵り言葉も、かつては使うのをタブー視されたものの、Z世代の若者にはそれほど酷い言葉遣いとは見なされていないようです。

という表現が出てきます。口を石鹸で洗い流しなさい、が直訳ですが、これは汚い言葉遣いを戒める時に言う慣用表現で、

そんな汚い言葉を使っちゃダメ

というような意味合いです。

石鹸、あるいは石鹸水で口を濯ぐというのは口汚い言葉を使う子に対する罰だったという話です。

smishing

中国を拠点にインターネット上で詐欺を働く集団をグーグルが告発したというニュースです。

ネット上の詐欺には様々な形態、手法がありますが、世界120ヵ国、100万ユーザー以上に被害をもたらしているとされる詐欺の手法とは、"smishing"と呼ばれるものです。

読者の皆さんも「スミッシング」という言葉を聞かれたことがあるでしょう。

「スミッシング」（"smishing"）というのは、携帯電話のSMS（ショートメッセージサービス）を利用したフィッシング詐欺（phishing）のことで、未払い料金があるとか、受取り荷物の確認依頼といったメッセージを送信し、記載されたURLのリンク先に誘導、個人情報や銀行口座、クレジットカード番号などを窃取するものです。

小生の会社ケータイには宅配荷物受取り確認の"smishing"がよく届きます。

こうした詐欺メールの類というものは、不自然な日本語であることが多く、一見して怪しいと分かるのですが、グーグルが訴えた中国のスミッシング詐欺集団はこうしたメール本文や本物と見分けが付かないようなウェブサイトを作成する手法を確立しており、その手管は益々巧妙化しているとのことです。

ちなみに、フィッシング（phishing）という言葉の語源は一説には、洗練されている、巧妙であるという意味の"sophisticate"であると言われます。

詐欺のテクニックは巧妙化しています。ご注意を。

window dressing

いつの世も投資詐欺というのは無くならない訳で、アメリカでは仮想通貨による詐欺事件が起きています。

トランプ大統領夫人やアルゼンチン大統領を広告塔に使った仮想通貨詐欺に関するニュース記事を読みました。

Two men behind a range of cryptocurrencies promoted by the likes of First Lady Melania Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei have been accused of engaging in fraud and exploiting “celebrity association and ‘borrowed fame’ to sell legitimacy to unsuspecting investors,” according to a new legal filing.

日本においても有名人を広告塔に使って出資を募り、何億円という資金を持ち逃げした詐欺事件が記憶に新しいところです。

記事のタイトルでは、

window dressing

という表現が使われています。陳列窓（window）を装飾する（dressing ）ということですが、見掛けや体裁、上辺を取り繕うこと、（実態を偽って）粉飾する、という意味合いで用いられる表現です。

訴追されている仮想通貨詐欺では、メラニア大統領夫人らのイメージを悪用して信用を騙り、仮想通貨の価格が高騰したタイミングで売り抜けることで出資者に多額の損害を被らせたというものです。

辞書を引くと、"window-dress"という動詞もあるようです。

アルコール、つまりお酒を飲むことと出世には相関関係がある（！？）という報告があるそうです。

若い時には下戸よりも多少酒癖が悪いくらいの方が出世する（！？）、という話のようなのですが・・・。

To prove that liquor can help grease the wheel of fortune, the professor and his colleagues spent 18 years monitoring the drinking habits of more than 3,000 Norwegians from the age of 13 to 31.

They found that those who started hitting the sauce hard in their late teens and early twenties boasted higher levels of education and income than those who practiced abstinence or minimal boozing.

“There is a correlation,” Pedersen declared. “The statistical findings are quite strong, so clearly significant.”

引用する記事によれば、ノルウェーの社会学者が行った専門的な研究の報告となっています。

記事中、

those who started hitting the sauce hard in their late teens

が指すのは、記事のタイトルにもある"Teenage binge-drinkers"ということになり、"hit the sauce"という表現は、

大酒を飲む、酒浸りになる

という意味の俗語表現です。以前取り上げたのですが、"sauce"には俗語でアルコール（お酒）の意味があります。

なお、真面目な研究報告の内容はアルコール（お酒）の消費が成功に結び付くというのではなく、お酒を伴う人間関係や交流がプラスに働くというもののようです。

しかし、お酒と社会的成功に相関関係があるなんて発想は日本で言えば昭和世代のサラリーマンの話ではないでしょうか。

最近の若い世代、とりわけZ世代と呼ばれる人たちはあまりお酒を飲まないと聞きます。飲みニケーションオヤジ世代の復権でしょうか。

on the nose

日本の国会議員が議場で居眠りをしているのはよく見かける光景です。高い給与を貰って居眠りとは・・・。マスコミの好餌になっています。

トランプ大統領が記者会中、目を閉じたり、うつらうつらしている様子が撮影され、SNSで拡散しているという記事を読みました。

カリフォルニア州知事のニューソム氏は"Dozy Don"と揶揄、かつてバイデン前大統領を"Sleepy Joe"と腐したトランプ氏にはブーメランのようになりました。

そのバイデン政権で報道官を務めたジェン・サキ氏のコメントが記事で引用されています。

MSNBC host and former Biden White House press secretary Jen Psaki also roasted Trump for his apparent power nap. “I mean, that was him in the White House today, basically appearing to nod off while his surgeon general talked about, of all things, really, dementia, obesity and sleep loss. という部分がありますが、"on the nose"というフレーズが出てきます。

このフレーズにはいくつかの意味があるようです。手元にある英和辞典にはこの意味を載せていないようなのですが、Collin’s Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsには、

If you describe someone or something as on the nose, you mean that they are considered to be unpleasant or offensive.

とあり、

不愉快である、不快感を催す、けしからん

という意味で使われているようです。そして、オーストラリア英語の表現であるとの補足説明があります。

もしかしてサキ氏の出自がオーストラリアかもと思ってチェックしてみましたがそうではありませんでした。

日本語で「鼻に付く」という表現がありますが、それに近い感じでしょうか。

affordability

昨日の投稿に続き、同じく米国内経済の状況を表す話題の単語に、

affordability

があります。

来年の中間選挙の前哨戦とも位置付けられるこのほどのヴァージニア、ニュージャージーの各州知事選、ニューヨーク市長選ではいずれも民主党候補が勝利し、トランプ政権は苦境に立たされることになりましたが、"affordability"が争点のひとつでした。インフレ、物価高に苦しむ国民が政権に「ノー」の声を突き付けたということです。

In the first major election cycle since President Donald Trump retook office, Democratic candidates who put affordability at the heart of their campaigns won big Tuesday.

A new NBC News exit poll found the economy and cost of living were the issues voters across the country said were among their top priorities.

今回選挙戦において、民主党候補らは、"affordability"を争点に掲げて支持を得ました。住居費や家賃、食料品、生活必需品などあらゆるものの値段が上昇し、家計を圧迫しているという現状があります。

"affordable"とは、お金を出す余裕がある、という意味合いですが、モノを買うだけの経済的余裕がある、値段に関して言えば、値頃感、といったところでしょうか。してみれば、"affordability"とは経済的余裕とでも訳せそうです。

動詞"afford"は高校英語で出てくるレベルでしょうか。〜するだけの（時間、資金の）余裕がある、という意味を丸暗記した記憶があります。

実のところ、当ブログでは"affordable"という単語を以前取り上げていました。15年前の投稿では、吉野家の牛丼（並）が280円とあります。今いくらするのかと思って調べると465円だそうです。

吉野家に行くことも無くなりましたが、決して払えないような値段では無いにしろ、外食ではお店に入る前に値段を見て躊躇しますし、どこで外食しても割高感ばかりを感じます。"affordability"とは経済的余裕と書きましたが、個々人の感覚的なものだとも思います。

"affordability"を巡って、トランプ政権は今後苦境を強いられることでしょう。トランプ氏自身はバイデン前政権の時よりも改善されていると、"affordability"問題を躍起になって否定しているようですが。

K-shaped economy

ニューヨーク市長選が行われ、民主社会主義を標榜するイスラム教徒のゾーラン・マムダニ氏が当選を確実にしたと報じられています。

マムダニ氏は今回選挙戦を億万長者との戦いと銘打ち、住居家賃の据え置きを始め、市内バスの無償化などの政策を打ち出しています。つまり、庶民の懐に優しい政策を推進するということです。

マムダニ氏勝利の背景にはインフレ、物価高に喘ぐ市民の声があると言えます。

選挙の話題とはまた別ですが、最近の米国内経済の状況を表す言葉に、

K-shaped economy

というものがあるようです。

アルファベットのKの形からイメージされる経済状況とは、上向きの斜線は富裕層を、下向きの斜線は庶民、貧困層を表しているというもので、富める者は益々富み、貧しい者は益々・・・、ということです。

さしずめ、Kの縦棒は収入や資産を表すグラフの縦軸といったところでしょうか。

最近は猫も杓子もエーアイ、エーアイと大騒ぎのきらいがあります。エーアイ、つまり人工知能（AI）の話です。

テレビやラジオのニュースでAIの話題を聞かない日はありませんし、SNSではAIによって生成された画像や動画であふれています。勤務先でも業務効率化のためにAIを活用するだの、毎日のように聞かされている身には少々食傷気味です。

株式市場はAI関連銘柄が活況を呈しています。米国のハイテク株は空前のブームですが、ここに至って株価を下げているところもあると報じられています。専門家の見立てでは昨今のAI関連銘柄の株価は高過ぎるというのです。

そして、最近のニュースで目にするのは、"AI bubble"という言葉です。AIのバブルがはじけたらどうなるか？警告とも取れる報道も目立つようになってきました。

「バブル経済」、「バブルがはじけた」という言葉を聞いて真っ先に思い出すのは、平成の不動産バブルではないでしょうか？

経済用語としての"bubble"はAmerican Heritage Dictionaryでは以下のように定義されています。

Economics 

An increase in the price of a commodity, investment, or market that is not warranted by economic fundamentals and is usually caused by ongoing investment or speculation in the expectation that the price will increase further.

日本人にとって不動産バブルはバブル経済という用語が一般に浸透するきっかけともなったと思いますが、意外にも経済用語としての"bubble"はもっと古くにその由来があるそうです。

その由来とは18世紀初頭に遡るのですが、イギリスで起きた、South Seaという会社の株価が大暴落した事件だそうです。

"South Sea Bubble"、南海泡沫事件と呼ばれるこの出来事は世界史の教科書に載っていますし、英和辞典でもエントリがあります。

アメリカでは特にAI bubbleへの懸念が高まっており、日経平均株価もその影響を受け大幅下落しました。

three-peat

米メジャーリーグのワールドシリーズをドジャースが制覇、ファンの皆さんはお祭り騒ぎですね。

山本由伸投手がMVPを獲得、大谷翔平選手も大活躍とあって、日本人選手たちの活躍は日米首脳会談でも話題になりました。

週明けのニュースを見ていますと、

という見出しが目に留まりました。

"three-peat"とは一体？

The Dodgers had only captured their second consecutive World Series title less than 48 hours earlier, but superstar Shohei Ohtani is already thinking about winning a third. 

Ohtani was taking part in the Dodgers’ championship parade in Hollywood on Monday when he was interviewed by Spectrum SportsNet LA.

He was asked if winning World Series championships was the “new norm” after Los Angeles had won back-to-back titles. 

“I’m already thinking about the third time we’re going to do this,” Ohtani replied through an interpreter.

記事を読むと想像が付きますが、"three-peat"とは、

三連覇

のことです。

"three"と"repeat"のかばん語となっています。

正直なところ、こんな単語があるとは知りませんでした。

「三連覇」を英語で、と言われたら、

three consecutive wins

とか訳していたと思いますが、今度からは"three-peat"と訳します（笑）

guns-a-blazing

トランプ米大統領は、キリスト教徒の殺害が相次いでいることを受けてナイジェリアに軍事介入するとSNSに投稿したと報じられています。

President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened U.S. military intervention in Nigeria and the withholding of all foreign aid if its government continues “to allow the killing of Christians.”

Trump said in a post to social media that if Nigeria does not halt the persecution of Christians he may send U.S. troops “guns-a-blazing” to “completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”

ナイジェリアではイスラム原理主義組織によるキリスト教徒へのテロが多発、ナイジェリア政府が対策を取らないならば米国の支援を中止し、派兵するとしています。

トランプ氏の投稿で、

guns-a-blazing

という表現が使われており、引用符付きとなっている他、関連記事のタイトルでもこの表現が引用されています。

何か特別な意味がありそうですが、軍事介入というあたり、銃（guns）を発射する（blaze）というのは文字通りの意味かとも思いました。

辞書には載っていないようなのですが、"with guns blazing"、あるいは"with all guns blazing"という類似のフレーズがあり、総力を上げて、というような意味合いがあるようです。

If you come out with guns blazing or with all guns blazing, you put all your effort and energy into trying to achieve something.

意味合いは掴めましたが、"guns-a-blazing"の-a-は一体何なのか？という疑問が出てきました。

そのあたり、ネットで検索してみますが、なるほどと思うような説明は見当たりません。

基本に立ち返り（?!）、辞書で接頭辞としてのa-をチェックしてみます。一体、英語の辞書で一番最初のエントリである"a"の項を引く人が、引く機会がどれくらいあるでしょうか？！

確信に至った訳ではありませんが、接頭辞a-には、動詞やその進行形（〜ing）の前に置かれて、その行為の最中にあることを強調する意味合いがあるそうです。

そしてこうした接頭辞a-というのは、アメリカ南部や南西部訛りなどに見られることが多いのだそうです。

少し長いですが、American Heritage Dictionaryの解説を引用します。

Prefixing a- to verb forms ending in -ing, as in a-hunting and a-fishing, was once fairly common in vernacular US speech, particularly in the highland areas of the South and in the Southwest. Such verb forms derive from an Old English construction in which a preposition, usually on, was placed in front of a verbal noun—a verb to which -ing had been added to indicate that the action was extended or ongoing. Gradually such prepositions were shortened to a-. The -ing forms came to be regarded as present participles rather than verbal nouns, and the use of a- was extended to genuine present participles. Eventually a- disappeared from many dialects, including Standard English in the United States and Great Britain, although it is still retained today in some isolated dialect areas. Today, speakers who use the a- prefix do not use it randomly. この解説にありますように、元はonという前置詞がその役割を果たしていたようです。前置詞onを動名詞（〜ing）の前に置いて、動詞が示す行為が進行、発展の途中であることを意味したというものです。このonがいつしかa-に取って代わられたようです。

では、トランプ氏発言の"guns-a-blazing"はどう訳すのが適当か？

日本のメディアの報道でこれを直接訳したと思われるものはあまり多くないようでしたが、

銃をぶっ放して（読売新聞）

といったものが見られました。

food loss and waste

昨日10月30日は「食品ロス削減の日」だったそうです。

SNSなどを見ていますと、政府広報を始め、自治体などが食品ロスの削減を呼び掛ける投稿が目につきました。

まだ食べられるものを捨ててしまう、過剰な在庫を腐らせてしまって結局廃棄になる、等、「食品ロス」は消費者である個人が意識することで減らせる、というのは分かっていてもなかなか実現できていないもの、かもしれません。

さて、「食品ロス」の英訳は"food loss"とは敢えて取り上げることもないような話と思いましたが、ことはそう単純ではなさそうです。

「食品ロス」の取り組みは日本に限らず、取り組みの内容の差こそあれ、世界各国で行われており、国連のウェブサイトにも特設ページが見られます。

そのページ内には「食品ロス」に関する知識クイズのコーナーがあるのですが、その質問の中に以下のようなものがあります。

一般に「食品ロス」と呼ばれる概念は、英語では"food loss and waste"となり、"food loss"と"food waste"は異なる概念なんですね。

日本での「食品ロス」はこの辺りをあまり厳密には区別していないようです。

食べ残し、売れ残りや期限が近いなど様々な理由で、食べられる食品が捨てられてしまう「食品ロス」。 日本の食品ロス量は、約600 万トンです。

国連のクイズの解答説明によれば、"food loss"とは食品が消費者に届く前に廃棄などされてしまうことを指し、"food waste"はレストランやスーパーマーケット、また購入後に家庭において食材や食品が廃棄されてしまうことを指すのだそうです。

我々が「食品ロス」、「フードロス」と呼んでいるのは、英語では"food waste"に当たる、と考えられますね。

cute

ご存知のようにトランプ政権は2期目ですが、3期目を画策しているという話はかねてよりありました。しかしながら、合衆国憲法では大統領任期は2期8年間が最長と定めており、3期目は不可能です。

当のトランプ氏もこの点は認識しているようですが、3期目への意欲はあるようで、この話題を時々持ち出してちらつかせることに余念が無いようです。

2028年の次期大統領選について、トランプ氏の発言が引用されている部分です。

On Monday, Trump said he would "love to do it" when asked about a potential 2028 bid. He also appeared to rule out the prospect of running on the 2028 Republican ticket as vice president, though said he would be "allowed to do that."

2028年に大統領候補として出馬することは無理だとしても、副大統領候補としてならば！？

この抜け穴は今年の4月にも取り沙汰された話ですが、トランプ氏自身が、

it's too cute

と言っています。

"cute"（キュート）は、可愛らしいという意味だとは言うまでもないですが、ここではそうではありません。

American Heritage Dictionaryの定義に、

Clever or witty, especially in an impertinent or evasive way, as in falsely suggesting that one is ignorant about the matter at hand.

とあり、これはずる賢い、小賢しい、といった、ネガティヴな意味となります。

以前取り上げましたように、"cute"という単語は"acute"の頭音消失形で、"cute"がカタカナの「キュート」、つまり可愛らしいという意味を持つはるか以前から、上述したような、狡猾さを意味する言葉でした。

トランプ氏は、次期大統領選で副大統領候補として出馬した後に再び大統領に返り咲くという抜け穴的シナリオを"cute"である、すなわちずる賢いやり方だ、と否定してみた訳ですが、果たして！？

break a sweat

英語の表現で、

break a sweat

というものがあります。汗をかく、という意味です。

Harrison Ford was spotted breaking a sweat while riding his Cannondale bike up the coastline of Los Angeles on Monday – something he prefers much more than riding the many Disney attractions based on his iconic roles.

不勉強を恥じますが、この表現を見たことがありませんでした。何故、"break"なのか？汗（sweat）と動詞breakの組み合わせは奇異に感じられます。

ところが、動詞breakの意味（沢山の意味がありますが）をつぶさに見ていくと、最後の方に、ちゃんと汗をかくという意味が載っているのです。

to produce visibly
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

ちなみに、手元にある研究社新英和大辞典やランダムハウス英和辞書にはこうした意味は載っておらず、"break a sweat"というフレーズも見当たりませんでした。

presumption of innocence

アメリカの保守政治活動家のチャーリー・カーク氏がユタ州で演説中に銃で撃たれて暗殺された事件で、逮捕された容疑者の公判が始まるようです。

容疑者は出廷に際して、平服を着用することを要望し認められた、と報じられています。通常であれば、自殺を防止するジャケット、手錠や足枷などの拘束具が装着されるところ、拘束は最小限に留められ、また写真やビデオ撮影も禁じられるという、異例の対応です。

The man accused of killing right-wing activist Charlie Kirk will be allowed to wear civilian clothes during pre-trial hearings to avoid prejudicing potential jurors, a Utah judge has said.

Judge Tony Graf said Tyler Robinson will be required to wear restraints during hearings, but photo or video of him in restraints will be barred.

異例の対応の背景には、容疑者の権利擁護という判断がある模様です。

"presumption of innocence"という用語は「推定無罪」と訳されます。何人も有罪と裁定されるまでは無罪と推定されるという法の原則を指すもので、ユタ州判事の判断は、拘束されている容疑者のイメージは陪審員らの偏見を生むリスクがある、ということのようです。

カーク氏暗殺事件はアメリカ国内はもとより、世界中で衝撃をもたらしましたが、故に裁判の行方も注目されるところです。

ちなみにユタ州は薬物注射に代えて銃殺による死刑を執行する数少ない州のひとつで、カーク氏暗殺の容疑者も有罪となれば死刑は免れないということです。

item

「アイテム」（item）という単語から最初に思い浮かべるのは、項目とか品物・品目といった和訳でしょうか。もしくはビデオゲームの中でゲットする武器や道具の類かも知れません。

英単語の"item"には俗語の意味として、男女の関係、という意味があるそうなのですが今日まで知りませんでした。

というくだりで"item"という表現が使われています。Merriam-Webster Dictionaryには、

a couple in a romantic or sexual relationship 

という定義が載っています。

"item"のこのような意味合いは、"item"が特にニュースやゴシップ記事のネタを指すのに使われることから生じたそうです。

ちなみに、こんなことでもなければ取り上げることもない単語と思われるので触れますと、"item"は紛れもなく名詞ですが、語源であるラテン語itemは副詞なんですね。

〜もまた、さらに、というような意味であり、モノをひとつずつ列挙するような場合に用いたことから、項目の意味合いになったそうです。

mafioso

NBA（全米プロバスケットボール協会）のスター選手を囮に使った違法賭博が摘発されました。現代におけるギャンブルのイカサマには最新テクノロジーが使われているそうです。

ポーカーゲームのテーブルに仕込んだX線透視の技術、カードに仕込んだ肉眼では見えないマークを判別できる特殊なコンタクトレンズなど、イカサマの手段に使われる最新テクノロジーはネットで容易く調達できるらしく、シロウトはカモにされるのがオチです。

A simple Google search for “X-Ray poker table” quickly pulled up numerous companies producing devices that apparently employ the exact technology mobsters used in their sprawling con, which prosecutors unveiled in a federal indictment Thursday.

ギャンブルの世界にヤクザはつきものですが、ヤクザの英語表現として思い起こすのは、マフィア（mafia）でしょう。（完全に同一の概念では無いとしても。）

記事では、

mafiosos

と出てくるのですが、マフィア（mafia）とは団体を指す呼称であって、その構成員のことは（mafioso）と言うのだとは、不勉強にして知りませんでした。

また、マフィア（mafia）という言葉より先に"mafioso"という言葉が先にあったようです。"mafioso"はゴロツキを意味するイタリア語シチリア方言が訛ったものらしく、マフィア（mafia）とは反抗精神や反体制感情を意味する言葉だったようです。

イタリア語ですから、"mafioso"は男性形で、女性ならば"mafiosa"、複数形は"mafiosi"となりますが、英語に取り入れられてからは複数形は"mafiosos"が普通のようです。

同じくイタリア語から借用している"virtuoso"という単語も同じような扱いです。

smug

ロシアとウクライナの停戦を仲介するトランプ大統領ですが、ハンガリーで予定していた米露首脳会談を取り止めると言い出しました。曰く、「時間の無駄」ということなのですが、停戦の条件面で譲ろうとしないロシアへの不満を滲ませたもののようです。

この事態にロシアは少し焦っているようです。

Russia scrambled on Wednesday to salvage the prospect of in-person talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin after they were unceremoniously put on hold.

Trump said on Tuesday that he didn’t want “to have a wasted meeting” with Putin, which was set to take place in Hungary in the next few weeks, as it became clear that Russia opposes the idea of an immediate ceasefire with Ukraine.

停戦の条件面で強気に出たものの、会談そのものがお流れになるというシナリオは想定外だったのでしょうか。

記事ではロシアに自惚れ（smugness）があったといいます。

The suspension of talks with Russia appears to be yet another U-turn from the U.S. administration, which has seesawed this year over its position on Russia, the Ukraine war and its causes, and its potential resolution.

振り返ってみると、ロシアとウクライナの間に入るトランプ大統領の態度はコロコロと変わるというか、今年の始めにはウクライナのゼレンスキー大統領をどやしつけたかと思うと、逆にサポートに転じたり、またトマホークの供与を巡っては慎重さを示したりと、一定ではありません。

ロシアは米国がウクライナ寄りになれば警戒し、ウクライナを突き放せばほくそ笑むというところです。

今回はハンガリーでの米露首脳会談を前にして、ゼレンスキー大統領とトランプ氏の会談があまりうまく行かなかったところ、ロシアにとっては自国に有利になるという期待、トランプ氏はロシア寄りだという自惚れ（smugness）があったという見方のようです。

"smug"という単語はゲルマン語系の語源で、着飾るという意味のsmückenという語に由来するそうです。綺麗な服装を纏った女性が自尊心からとりすましている様子を形容するようになったそうです。

会ってくれというのならば会わんでも無い、そんな風に構えていたところ、会談は取り止めだ、と言われてしまったプーチン大統領の面目は果たして・・・！？

ニューヨーク（NYC）に馬車が走っているとは知りませんでしたが、動物愛護団体がそれを廃止するキャンペーンを張っているとかで、その費用に何百万ドルも使っているというのがあらすじです。

冒頭に、"a lot of hay"という表現が出て来ます。

"hay"の俗語の意味に、はした金、というものがあります。この俗語の"hay"は通例否定形で用いられることが多く、

That ain’t hay.

（それははした金ではない、大金だ。）

というように用いられます。

記事では"a lot of hay"となっていますが、こちらは大金という意味になります。

記事の話題が馬車、つまり馬の話しということもあって、"hay"（干し草）とはしゃれが効いています。

英語の慣用表現にはこの干し草（hay）が出てくるものが多く、これまでも様々取り上げてきました。

パリのルーブル美術館からナポレオン時代の宝飾品が強奪される事件がトップで報じられています。白昼堂々と行われた強奪はわずか7分の間に行われたとあります。

引用した記事によるとフランスの警察当局は犯人を、

“commando” of four robbers

と特定した模様です。

"commando"という単語は奇襲部隊などと訳されます。アフリカーンス語に由来するとあるのは、19世紀末の南アフリカ戦争（ブール戦争）においてブール人が組織した民兵隊を"commando"と呼んだことからのようです。

英語には"command"（命令、支配）という単語もありますが、いずれも命ずるという意味のラテン語動詞mandareから来ているものです。（com-は強意の接頭辞。）

高所作業車をルーブル美術館の建物に横付けし、白昼堂々と宝飾品を奪い去った4人の奇襲部隊はバイクに乗って逃走、手掛かりは現場に残されたヘルメットくらいしか無いようです。

盗まれた宝飾品はバラバラにされたり加工された上で換金されるそうで、貴重な歴史的財産が失われると懸念されています。

先週金曜日の1語は"bazooka"、今日の1語が"tomahawk"と戦争に使われる兵器が連続しますが、ウクライナが米国にトマホークミサイルの供与を求めているというニュースがトップで報じられています。

WASHINGTON — Kremlin tyrant Vladimir Putin “is in a weak position” and fearful that the US will finally send Ukraine some Tomahawk missiles that can cut deep into Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday.

Zelensky had met with President Trump on Friday — a day after Trump held a call with Putin — and pushed to buy the much-sought-after long-range missiles, although he left the White House meeting empty-handed.

トマホークは射程距離2500キロ以上という巡航ミサイルでウクライナがこれを使えばロシア国内の軍事中枢を破壊することも可能だそうです。故にロシアとウクライナ間の戦争の局面を大きく変える可能性があるとも言われているのですが、トランプ大統領はウクライナへの供与には慎重になっているそうです。

このトマホーク（Tomahawk）は元は北米インディアンの使うまさかり（斧；hatchet）のことであると辞書の解説にあります。ランダムハウス英和辞書の図版では木の持ち手に石斧が取り付けられたようなものです。

"Tomahawk"という単語は北米インディアンであるアルゴンキン族の言葉に由来するそうです。アルゴンキン語の綴りはtamahaacというもので、切り離す（道具）という意味だそうです。

スペルの-hawkという部分がタカ（hawk）を想起させるのですが関係無いようです。

bazooka

米中貿易戦争はトランプ政権が仕掛ける高関税に対し、中国の対抗手段としてはレアアースというものがあります。世界におけるレアアースの中国シェアは7割近くを占めるとされ、電子機器類をはじめとする先端技術に必要不可欠な資源は中国に頼らざるを得ないのが実情です。

先ごろ、中国はレアアースの輸出規制を発表したと報じられています。

The announcement detailed sweeping new curbs on its rare earth exports, in a move that tightens Beijing's grip on the global supply of the critical minerals - and reminded Donald Trump just how much leverage China holds in the trade war.

China has a near-monopoly in the processing of rare earths - crucial for the production of everything from smartphones to fighter jets.

Under the new rules, foreign companies now need the Chinese government's approval to export products that contain even a tiny amount of rare earths and must declare their intended use.

In response, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods and put export controls on key software.

米財務省長官のBessent氏のコメントが引用されており、

とあります。レアアース輸出規制で中国は世界を敵に回した、中国は「バズーカ砲」（bazooka）を向けている、と批判したものです。

「バズーカ砲」（bazooka）は敢えて説明の必要が無いかもしれませんが、対戦車砲とも呼ばれます。研究社新英和大辞典には、米軍が使用した戦車攻撃用の携帯用歩兵兵器、とありますが、語源欄には"bazooka"とは元は楽器の名称であったとの説明を見ました。

アメリカ人喜劇役者が自ら考案した楽器に"bazooka"という名前を付けたのだそうですが、その楽器とはトロンボーンに似た長いパイプを持った管楽器だったようです。

語源としては、bazooはトランペットを意味するオランダ語bazuinから来ているそうです。このbazooと、また別の種類の楽器を指すkazooが一緒になって"bazooka"となったそうですが、kazooの方はその音から来ており、擬声語だそうです。

昨日取り上げた、米国防省が新しい報道ルールを策定しメディア各社の反発を招いているという話題の続きです。公式にリリースした情報しか報道してはならない、従わない場合には出禁にするという一方的な内容ですが、大手メディア各社は新ルールへの同意を拒否し、記者証を返却しているところもあるそうです。

Today, NPR will lose access to the Pentagon because we will not sign an unprecedented Defense Department document, which warns that journalists may lose their press credentials for "soliciting" even unclassified information from federal employees that has not been officially approved for release. That policy prevents us from doing our job. Signing that document would make us stenographers parroting press releases, not watchdogs holding government officials accountable.

そのうちの1社、NPRの記者は取材の自由が制限されるようなルールは受け入れられないとして同意文書への署名を拒否した、とあります。新聞記者としての矜持でしょう。

省が公表する情報のみを伝えるに留まるならば、それは報道記者ではなく、速記者（stenographer）に過ぎない、とあります。

英語の"stenographer"は速記者と訳されます。それでは接頭辞のsteno-は「速い」という意味かというとそうではありません。

辞書を引くと分かりますが、接頭辞steno-は狭い（narrow）とか小さい（small）という意味のギリシャ語から来ています。速記者が書く、線や点で構成された省略文字が"stenography"です。

速記文字のことを、"stenotype"、"short hand"とも言います。

beat reporter

米国防省が報道内容を規制する新しいルールを策定しましたが、CNNをはじめとする報道各社が反発しています。

ヘグセス国防相による新しいルールでは、メディアが報じることのできる内容として、国防省が公式にリリースした情報のみに限定するとし、これを守ることのできないメディアは出入り禁止にする、というものです。

Last month, Hegseth’s press office outlined new rules requiring beat reporters to sign a pledge not to obtain or use unauthorized material, even if the information is unclassified. 引用した記事では、

beat reporter

という表現が出て来ますが、これは特定分野について担当する報道記者のことを指す用語で、例えば経済担当の記者とか、政治部記者、警視庁担当記者などといった、特定の分野、政府機関に出入りする記者のことを意味します。知りませんでした。

何故、"beat reporter"というのかというのは良く分かりませんが、"beat"という名詞には以下のような定義があるということが分かりました。

また、新聞記者が追い求める「特種」という意味も"beat"にはあります。

"beat"という動詞は叩くという意味ですが、"beat the woods"や"beat the bush"は薮などを打って獲物を捜し回るという意味がありますし、こういった表現からジャーナリズムの用語に拡張したもののようです。

creative destruction

今年のノーベル賞受賞者の発表が相次いでいますが、経済学賞はジョエル・モキイア教授ら3氏に授与と発表されました。

イノベーションと経済成長の関係性に関する研究成果が評価されたということです。

専門的なことは分かりませんが、イノベーション（技術革新）が経済成長に不可欠なものであるということを数学的なモデルで説明したものようです。古いものは新しいものに取って代わられることで経済成長がもたらされるという考えは、"creative destruction"という概念で紹介され、「創造的破壊」と日本語訳されます。

Stockholm, Sweden (AP) — Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt won the Nobel memorial prize in economics Monday for their research into the impact of innovation on economic growth and how new technologies replace older ones, a key economic concept known as “creative destruction.”

この"creative destruction"という言葉は古くからあり、オーストリアの経済学者ヨーゼフ・シュンペーター氏（Joseph Schumpeter (1883-1950)）の造語だそうです。

The term creative destruction was first coined by Austrian economist Joseph Schumpeter in 1942. Schumpeter characterized creative destruction as innovations in the manufacturing process that increase productivity, describing it as the "process of industrial mutation that incessantly revolutionizes the economic structure from within, incessantly destroying the old one, incessantly creating a new one."

創造（create）と破壊（destruction）は対立する概念ですからある意味形容矛盾とも言える言葉です。

古いモノは新しいモノの創造により取って代わられる、即ち破壊されることはやむを得ない、というところでしょうか。経済成長の恩恵に与るためには受け入れなければならない現実であるとも紹介されています。

26年落ちの古いクルマを未だに走らせている小生ですが・・・。

knives come out

米カリフォルニア州では州知事選が話題になっています。任期満了を迎える現職知事Gavin Newsom氏の後任となる候補者には一時カマラ・ハリス前副大統領も取り沙汰されましたが、今話題をさらっているには、最有力候補者とされるKatie Porter元議員です。

CBSニュースの報道記者からの質問に回答を拒んだ同氏への批判が高まり、居丈高との印象が形成されることになってしまったようです。また、Porter氏が過去に陣営スタッフを口汚く罵った様子が映っている別の動画も浮上し、益々印象を悪くしているようです。

Knives are coming out for former Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) in the California gubernatorial race after several videos released this week generated widespread criticism over her behavior.  

Porter’s opponents and other Democrats rebuked the former congresswoman this week after she sought to end an interview early over a question that was visibly frustrating her.

引用した記事の冒頭部分に、

とあります。Porter氏に対してナイフ（それも複数）が抜かれている（out）、とは甚だおっかない話です。

ここでの"knives are coming out (for)"とは慣用表現で、ある人に対する反感や嫌悪感情が高まっているという意味です。

手元にあるCollins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsでは以下のように定義されています。

the knives are out

have the knives out

If you say the knives are out for you, or that people have their knives out for you, you mean that other people are feeling very angry or resentful towards you, and you are trying to cause problems for you. 

著名人や政治家は一旦イメージが悪くなると致命的でもあります。特にSNS全盛の現代にあってはこうした動画は拡散され、印象が定着してしまうことに繋がり、過剰なバッシングにもつながりますが、この"knives out"という表現はまさにそうした状況を指すもののように感じられます。

最有力候補とされるPorter氏は失地回復なるか、というところですが、今のところ反省や謝罪の言葉は出ていないようです。

ladies’ finger

オクラはお好きですか？

小生は豆腐（冷奴）にオクラを切ったのを載せて食べるのが好きです。

そのオクラのことを、"ladies' finger"というのをご存知でしょうか？

私は今日初めて知りました。

オクラが何故、"ladies' finger"？

形が女性のほっそりした指に似ているからです。

言われてみれば確かに！

オクラは英語で"okra"ですが、アフリカ原産で西アフリカの言語に由来するそうです。また、"gumbo"とも言いますがこれもバンツー語（アフリカ）に由来します。

guilt-trip

海外のレストランなどで食事するとチップを払うことがあります。特にアメリカでのチップの習慣についてはこれまでも何度か話題にしてきたところですが、チップが義務のようになっていることなどが顧客の不満につながっている現実があります。

ファーストフード店やカフェなど、特別なサービスを受けないところでもチップを払うのが当たり前のようになっていたりします。最近ではレジの端末で支払いと併せてチップの額を選択させるようなものもあったりします。

つまりは、チップを払うように仕向けられているというのが顧客の感じるところとなっています。

引用する記事によれば、こうした現実に6割以上のアメリカ人がやるかたない不満やストレスを感じているということです。

We’re guilt-tripping over guilt-tipping.

Two-thirds (65%) of American consumers are experiencing tipping fatigue — up from 60% last year and 53% in 2023, according to an annual study by Popmenu, a tech company serving more than 10,000 restaurants.

Over the last year, people have paid around $150 in tips on average, which they didn’t feel were necessary, with 44% saying they tip at places where they don’t think it’s customary.

引用した記事の冒頭部分、"guilt-tripping"という単語はよく注意して見ないと、続く"guilt-tipping"と同じかと見間違えてしまいます。

ニューヨークポスト紙お得意のシャレですが、"guilt-trip"という単語がちゃんとあるというのを知りました。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは、

to cause feelings of guilt in (someone) : to try to manipulate the behavior of (someone) by causing feelings of guilt

と定義されており、罪悪感をもたらす（感じさせる）、という意味であることが分かります。

一方、"guilt-tipping"ですが、こちらは辞書に載っているような単語ではありませんが、罪悪感に駆られてする（嫌々ながらの）チップの支払い、という概念を指すものと思われます。

上記の定義にもありますように、"guilt-trip"とは罪悪感を感じさせるという意味の他、相手に罪悪感を覚えさせることでその行動をコントロール（manipulate）しようとする、という意味合いもあるようです。

つまり、動詞"guilt-trip"は、

（自身が）罪悪感を感じる

という自動詞的な意味と、

（相手に）罪悪感を感じさせてある行動を取らせる

という他動詞的な意味のふたつがあると言えます。

後者の用法については、

guilt-trip a person into doing 〜

のようなパターンを取ることが多いようです。

後者は以前取り上げた、動詞としての"guilt"の用法とほぼ同じです。

この"guilt"に"trip"という単語が結び付いたものですが、名詞の"trip"には感情や気持ちがある傾向に傾いたり、とらわれたりすることを指す意味合いがあります。

日々の人間関係の中で、"guilt-trip"を感じることは少なくないのではないでしょうか？

rawdog

唐突ですが、"rawdogging"という言葉をご存知でしょうか？

パソコンやスマホといったデジタル環境にどっぷりと浸かっている現代人にとって、四六時中チャットやSNSの刺激に曝されるのが日常となっている中、何もしないでただじっとしている、というのは苦行に近いものがあります。

その「何もしないでただじっとしている」というのが、"rawdogging"の意味なんだそうです。

Generation Zers have devised a new way to mentally detox from omnipresent digital distractions — by undertaking challenges where they do nothing all day, as seen in TikTok clips with thousands of views.

Dubbed rawdogging, the practice involves staring into space sans entertainment, sleep or other distractions to give themselves a respite in an age where everyone is glued to their screen.

デジタルネイティブとも呼ばれるZ世代の若者の間で、この"rawdogging"が流行っていると紹介されています。

それは例えば、飛行機に乗っても映画や音楽などの機内エンターテイメントサービスは一切利用せず（また、勿論スマホ画面を見るでもなく、読書をするでもなく）、ただひたすら座ったままでじっとしているということや、ジョギングに出るにしても音楽を聴きながらではなく、ただ走る行為のみに集中する、といっとものだということです。

"rawdogging"とは何もしないでいること、あるいは退屈するような単純な作業をどれだけ我慢出来るかというチャレンジみたいな側面があるようです。若者の間では"rawdogging marathon"といって楽しみながら（?!）やるのが流行っているみたいです。

"rawdogging"という単語はスラングらしいですが、Merriam-Webster Dictionary（オンライン）には載っていて、以下のように説明されています。

Rawdog is a slang term that means to endure a difficult, dull, or mundane activity without any diversions or other support while doing it.

また、"rawdog"は元はややいかがわしい意味合いで使われていたといい、

Rawdog originated as vulgar slang meaning “to have sex without a condom.”

これは成人向けの意味合いですので、使うにあたっては注意が必要です。

この成人向けの意味合いが「何もしないでただじっとしている」という意味に拡張したのは、行為に際して準備や手当てをしない、というところから来ているようです。
