英和辞書で"catfish"を引くと、ナマズと出てきます。ナマズと言えばヒゲですが、猫（cat）を髣髴とさせるヒゲであることからその名がついたものです。

ところで、"catfish"には“ナマズ”以外に俗語の意味があります。英和辞書には多分載っていないのではないでしょうか。

この引用において、"catfish"は動詞として使われていることが明らかですが、コンテクストからすると“騙す”という意味が当てはまるように思われます。

辞書には載っていないのですが、"catfish"にはそのような意味があるようです。

SNSで本人ではない偽のアカウントを立ち上げることを意味するようですが、ごく最近誕生した単語であると言えます。どういう語源によるものか興味深いところですが、上記の説明によればテレビのドキュメンタリー番組のタイトルに由来するもののようです。
