料理の表現 ― turn up

まずは記事を引用します。

米国の大手製薬会社ファイザーが、同じくイギリスの大手であるアストラゼネカを買収する意向であると報じられていますが、メガファーマ同士の合併により、製薬業界の合従連衡が加速すると言うような見方が広まっています。

ところで、ファイザーによる買収には被買収側のAZ社もイギリス政府関係者もあまり乗り気ではないようです。これに対して、ファイザー側は英国での雇用を確保するとか、合併後の新本社は英国に置くなどと言っているようですが、さてどうなることでしょう。

では、今日取り上げる表現ですが、


turn up


という何でもないような動詞の表現がタイトル（turns up heat）と本文（turned up the pressure）に出てきます。最初意味を掴みかねたのですが、辞書を引くとここで言う"turn up"の"up"とはつまりはボリュームを上げる、ということなんですね。

何のボリュームかと言うと、具体的にはガスの火です。ツマミを捻って火力を上げるイメージです。

その逆は、"turn down"です。

つまりは料理で使う表現なのですが、"turn up heat"、もしくは"turn up pressure"は、引用した記事にも見られるように、比喩的な表現としてイディオムになっています。


If someone turns up the heat on a person or situation, they put pressure on them in order to get what they want.

ファイザー社は何が何でもAZ社を買収しようと躍起なのでしょう。

ちなみに、"grilling"とは質問攻めにする、厳しく尋問する、という意味ですが、これも料理の表現です。
