働き蜂は寄り道しません ― beeline

昔からですが、日本人サラリーマンは海外からよく、”働き蜂”とのレッテルを貼られています。朝から晩まで、会社組織に忠誠を尽くして働き通しのサラリーマンを、少し揶揄するような表現です。

”働き蜂”は英語では、"a worker bee"などと表現されるようですが、ハチの習性として、巣に真っ直ぐに戻ってくることから、"beeline"は


一直線に、最短コースで～


という意味が生まれたそうです。

表現のパターンとしては、


in a beeline （寄り道せずに、真っ直ぐに）
make a beeline for～　（急いで～に向かう、一直線に～に向かう）


などがポピュラーなようです。実例を以下にあげます。


"When the first concert ended in March, I made a beeline to his dressing room, and I said to him, 'Maestro, we need you in Chicago. We will do anything to bring you here.' "

Let's say you've had a bad day - your boss criticized your work, a co-worker was rude to you, and to top it off, you had a flat tire on the way home.
