大物になるにはデブでないと！？ ― heavyweight

"A weight problem"（*1）を抱えておられる方には失礼な話ですが、heavyweight（one of above average weight）(*2)であることは、VIPであることの1つの条件かもしれません。

今日のニュースで、下記の見出しが目を引きました。


Hatoyama appoints DPJ heavyweights


言うまでもなく、衆院選で大勝を収めた鳩山民主党代表に関する記事ですが、見出しの言わんとするところは鳩山氏が民主党(DPJ)の”heavyweights”を任命、と解釈されます。

記事は以下のように続きます。


Japan’s incoming prime minister has picked one of his Democratic party’s most influential politicians as foreign minister in an effort to send a reassuring signal to the US and other international partners.

Yukio Hatoyama, who last month led the DPJ to a historic victory over the ruling Liberal Democratic party, told reporters at the weekend he intended to appoint Katsuya Okada, the party’s secretary-general, as foreign minister.

Separately, Mr Hatoyama over the weekend picked Naoto Kan, a former leader of his Democratic Party of Japan, as deputy prime minister and head of the national strategy bureau, a new body intended to seize control of policy from Japan’s bureaucracy.

"heavyweights"は、岡田氏と菅氏のことだと分かります。それぞれ外相と国家戦略局長（head of the national strategy bureau）への起用ということのようです。

さて、重要閣僚への起用と”体重”に関連があるかどうかですが、岡田氏、菅氏の両氏をメディアで拝見する限り余り太っているようにも思われませんし、あまり関係なさそうです。（笑）

"heavyweight"を大物政治家、や重鎮と解釈する訳は、American Heritage Dictionaryによると、"informal"な部類になるようです。
