最近世間を騒がせている、制御不能になってしまうAI（人工知能）の危険性に関する話しです。これまでにAIがテスト環境から逸脱して実際のシステム脆弱性をターゲットにしたという事例や、オーストラリアでは本来アクセスが許可されない健康保険データベースへの侵入があったなど、幾つかのインシデントが公になっています。しかしながら、実際には何万件というインシデントが発生しているとの報告があり、暴走するAIの事例は我々が知らないだけで枚挙にいとまが無い状況なのだと思われます。

そして記事では、

the problem is orders of magnitude more complex than what is publicly known

というくだりがあります。

この箇所の文意を最初掴みあぐねたのですが、イタリックにした部分、"orders of magnitude"というフレーズの解釈が問題です。

AIのインシデントが認識されているよりも、より複雑なものであった、というのが文意ですが、"order of magnitude"は後続の"(more) complex"を修飾する副詞のような働きをしていると考えられます。

この"order of magnitude"は慣用的なフレーズで、"order"は等級、"magnitude"は大きさ、程度を意味するものですが、いわゆる数字の「桁」を指すと辞書にあります。それは数字としては10倍、つまりゼロ（0）一つ分、ということなのですが、ここでは"orders of magnitude"と複数形ですから、10倍以上、100、1,000という桁違いである、ということになります。

辞書の例文には、

of the same order of magnitude（同程度の大きさの）

Their estate is larger than ours by two orders of magnitude.（彼らの土地は我々のよりも二桁分大きい。（100倍もある。））

これらの用例は、"of the same order of magnitude"や"by two orders of magnitude"であり、前置詞ofやbyがありますが、記事の用例は前置詞がありません。

このような用法は〜倍を意味するtime(s)という名詞が前置詞を伴わずに後続の形容詞を修飾するように使われるのに似ています。
