上記の引用で、"ruby red"という表現が出てきます。宝石のルビーが持つ赤色、ということだと思われますが、これはどういう意味なのでしょうか？

米国の政治、特に選挙戦において共和党が赤、民主党が青というのはよく知られるところです。そして、赤と青が混じることで生じる紫色（purple）が両党が激しく争う、いわゆる接戦州（swing state）を指すイメージ色であることもご存知かと思います。

"ruby red"は赤色でも特に「濃い赤色」、

であることから共和党が特に強いとされる州をイメージさせる色として使われています。日本国内での報道では「共和党の牙城」といった表現が使われています。

ちなみに、英単語の"ruby"は赤いという意味のラテン語rubens、赤くなるという意味のラテン語動詞rubeoに由来します。
