大統領就任式：紫色のコーデに込められた願い ― bipartisanship

いよいよバイデン新政権が正式にスタートしました。

就任式にはバイデン夫妻を始め、カマラ・ハリス副大統領夫妻、オバマ元大統領夫妻やヒラリー・クリントン氏らの顔ぶれが見られますが、女性が一様に紫色を基調としたファッションであると注目されています。

果たして紫色（purple）のコーディネイトにはどのような意味が込められているのでしょうか？

In a sea of red, white and blue, there’s a whole lot of purple.

Vice President Kamala Harris, former first lady Michelle Obama and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton donned purple, a color used traditionally as a symbol of bipartisanship — a mix of Republican red and Democratic blue — for Inauguration Day.

The color, Vanity Fair reported, also has historically symbolized nobility and was a color favored by the suffragettes, in addition to white.

The color was chosen by suffragettes in 1908, according to the National Park Service, to represent “the royal blood that flows in the veins of every suffragette, the instinct of freedom and dignity.”

日本での紫色と言えば、昔古典や歴史の授業で習ったように、最も高貴な位にある人が身に付けるものと理解されています。

米国政治史における紫は、記事にありますように、

a symbol of bipartisanship

だそうです。

その説明が、共和党の赤と民主党の青を混ぜたもの、というのに納得。

"bipartisan"とは二大政党における、二党の協働のことであり、超党派などとも訳されます。

ここにも、赤と青に分断された米国を何とかして再びひとつにしたい、癒しをもたらしたいという新政権の希望が見てとれます。
