今月始めに国土安全保障省の長官から更迭されたKristi Noem氏に偽証罪の嫌疑がかけられています。

移民政策の一環で製作されたキャンペーン動画に200万ドルという巨費が注ぎ込まれたという件で追及を受けていたNoem氏は、費用についてトランプ大統領も了承の上だったと釈明しましたが、トランプ氏は聞いていないとコメント。Noem氏の釈明は議会での偽証に相当すると民主党が難じているものです。

偽証（罪）は英語で"perjury"といいます。この単語のスペル中に"jury"（陪審）という語を見ることができます。"jury"という単語は、誓約する、誓うという意味のラテン語iurareから来ています。

では、接頭辞にあたるper-は？

これまでも漠然と疑問に思っていました。よく知られる接頭辞per-の意味合いは、〜を通して、とか貫通して、というものですが、ここでの接頭辞per-には、除去、破壊、〜を害する（harmful）、という意味があります。

つまり、ウソはつきません、という宣誓を毀損する行為が偽証、ということになります。

接頭辞per-のちょっと変わった意味合いですが、実のところ、perish（朽ちる）、perfidy（裏切る）といった単語にも見られるものです。
