電子タバコに規制の網 ー Wild West

当ブログでも何度か取り上げてきましたが、電子タバコ（e-cigarette）に遂に規制がかかることになりました。

アメリカの食品医薬品局（FDA）は今年8月から全ての電子タバコ販売業者に対する規制を施行することを発表したというニュースです。


E-cigarettes could turn out to be either a savior that helps addicted smokers quit or a lure that hooks a whole new generation on nicotine.

While science tries to decode those conflicting signals, the federal government took the responsible step Thursday to regulate electronic cigarettes in a way that tries to head off the worst outcome while still allowing potential benefits of vaping to emerge.

The new regulations, to go into effect in August, would ban sales to minors, require warning labels, ban the distribution of free samples and, most important, require makers of e-cigarettes that hit the market after Feb. 15, 2007, to go through a government approval process. Most e-cigarettes — whether made by tobacco giants or mom-and-pop stores — will fall under the stricture, giving the Food and Drug Administration authority to look at everything from ingredients to health risks.

Until now, e-cigarettes — battery-operated inhalers that contain nicotine, the powerfully addictive substance in cigarettes — have been marketed, as an FDA official noted Thursday, in a "wild, wild West" environment where anything goes.

試供品への警告表示を義務付ける、
販売業者は規制当局の審査を受ける、


といったもののようですが、ある意味当たり前の事が今回義務化されたという印象でないでしょうか？

これまで如何に「野放し状態」であったかが分かろうというものです。

ベネズエラでビール不足⁉︎ ー tough to swallow

南米のベネズエラでビールの供給がトラブルになっているという、お酒好きには笑えないニュースを見ました。


Farmer Luis Garcia has coped with many of the shortages that plague his economically distressed nation: toilet paper, shampoo, sugar. But the latest scarcity is more than Garcia can swallow. Beer.

For as long as he can remember, Garcia, 43, has ended each day in this central Venezuelan fishing village with a beer or two at his local tasca (bar). Now, that’s going to be impossible because the country’s largest brewery has shut its operations and laid off 10,000 workers, citing a lack of malted barley.

Cerveceria Polar, which produces more than three-quarters of the country’s suds, closed the last of its four domestic breweries in late April. The culprit, the company said, was the Venezuelan government’s repeated delays in selling it dollars to import supplies it needs to keep operating.

国内の生産量の75%を占めるメーカーが製造を止めてしまったことが直接の原因だそうですが、メーカーによれば政府の失政のよって生産を止めざるを得ない状況に追い込まれたと主張しているようです。

どうやら社会主義政策をとる同国政府では米ドルを始めとする外国為替のコントロールが厳しいらしく、メーカーの原料調達に影響が及んでいるようです。

難しいことはさておき、ビール好きには想像したくもない状況に違いありません。

"swallow"という動詞は、飲み込む、食べる、嚥下するという意味ですが、食べ物や飲み物に限らず、事態や状況、事実などを「受け容れる」という意味でも使われます。

呑めないビールの話だけに、"tough to swallow"だと・・・。

トランプ氏は当確⁉︎ ー presumptive

アメリカ大統領選の指名候補獲得争いは、共和党のトランプ氏がインディアナ州で勝利を収め、競っていたテッド・クルーズ氏が撤退しました。

これによりトランプ氏による同党の指名獲得が「確実視」されています。

Technically, Trump has yet to clinch the nomination outright. His victory in Indiana Tuesday is likely to put him between 183 and 190 short of the 1,237 delegates he needs. But even using conservative projections of his performance in upcoming states, Trump will hit the total, including unbound delegates who say they back him, by the time the GOP primary process ends June 7.

恐らく、日本語では「当確」という意味になるでしょう。

ゴールデンウィーク後半戦ですがいかがお過ごしでしょうか？

小生は国内はもとより、海外旅行などする計画もなく、自宅をベースに普段とあまり変わる事もなく過ごしております。

海外に行かれる方は空港のセキュリティチェックの行列にうんざりされているのでしょうか？テロ対策ですから仕方ないとは言え・・・。

JFK, according to Fox News Travel, has “by far” one of the worst TSA checkpoints.

But security delays are not the TSA’s only problem.

Newark Liberty International, which runs a close second to JFK on Fox News’ list of US airports with “the worst TSA checkpoints,” also was slammed for lax screening and reports of employee theft. That resulted in a rare occurrence in government: Several employees were actually dismissed.

Not to be outdone, a screener at JFK last summer was likewise busted for theft, trying to abscond with a passenger’s Rolex watch. Another TSA security screener at JFK was arrested three weeks later on an unrelated theft charge.

アメリカにおける空港のセキュリティチェックの評判は地に落ちています。

時間がかかるという事のみならず、検査官の信頼性が疑問視されているようです。

引用した記事によると、旅行者の金品をくすねる検査官がいるようですから要注意です。

"abscond"という単語は、接頭辞のab-と、隠れる（conceal）という意味のcondereから成り立っています。

逃げる、という意味になりますが、引用記事の用例に見られるように、「本来自分のものではないのに持ち逃げする」という意味でも用いられます。

またその場合、前置詞withと共に用いられます。

成りすまし ー impostor

フェースブックで成りすましの被害が増加しているそうです。
