対イランの戦争でアメリカはミサイルを使い過ぎてしまって在庫が枯渇しつつあるという記事を先日取り上げましたが、やはり現実としてミサイルは不足している状況にあるそうです。現状の在庫は通常の2割ほどに留まるとされ、イランによる弾道ミサイル攻撃に対応するには不足で、アジア地域での有事にも対応できない恐れがあると言われています。

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth this week pleaded with Republicans on Capitol Hill for billions of dollars to replenish America’s dangerously depleted stockpiles of missiles and other crucial munitions. Hegseth’s appeal was nakedly partisan—he ignored Democratic lawmakers entirely—but also long overdue.

"squander"の定義、また同義語としては"waste"が挙げられます。類語辞典（シソーラス）で"squander"を引くと、"lavish"、"slather"、そして"spend money like water"などの類語と類似表現が並んで見えます。これらは、お金や資源（リソース）を惜しみなく費やすということですが、後先を考えずムダに浪費する、というニュアンスもあることを考えると、トランプ政権、アメリカ国防省の無策を暗に批判する意図が込められた単語のチョイスとも言えなくはないでしょう。
