President Obama awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to a shocked Vice President Biden on Thursday at the White House.
Biden and the president had gathered with others for what the White House had described as a final tribute to the vice president.
(Greg Jaffe. Obama surprises Joe Biden with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Washington Post. January 12, 2017.)
“I had no inkling,” Biden said after the medal was draped around his neck. “I thought we were going . . . to toast one another and say what an incredible journey it has been.”
(ibid.)
I had no inkling

get away with murder
President-elect Donald Trump went after drug makers in the opening remarks of his press conference Wednesday, calling the industry's practices “disastrous” and suggested the government should negotiate drug prices.
Biotech stocks immediately fell — the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index dropped about 3 percent on Wednesday.
“The other thing we have to do is create new bidding procedures for the drug industry, because they're getting away with murder, pharma. Pharma has a lot of lobbies, a lot of lobbyists, a lot of power. And there's very little bidding on drugs,” he said.
(Sarah Karlin-Smith. Trump says drug industry 'getting away with murder.' Politico. January 11, 2017.)
they're getting away with murder

― grandfather
AT&T’s grandfathered unlimited plans are vestiges of an earlier era, when unfettered access to mobile data was a perk offered to those willing to buy into the smartphone before it became ubiquitous. Now, those plans are getting costlier — again. AT&T has just announced a $5 increase on its grandfathered unlimited plans, bringing the total cost per month to $40, according to a report from DSLReports yesterday and confirmed by ArsTechnica today. That follows a $5 increase back in February of 2016, meaning those plans have jumped more than 30 percent in a little under one year.
(Nick Statt. AT&T is raising the price of grandfathered unlimited plans again. The Verge. January 10, 2017.)

― chop
Amazon Web Services appears to be ramping up its security chops. TechCrunch has learned that the e-commerce giant’s cloud services group quietly acquired cyber security firm harvest.ai.
The San Diego-based startup, co-founded by a team that includes two former NSA employees, uses machine learning and artificial intelligence to analyze user behavior around a company’s key IP to try to identify and stop targeted attacks before valuable customer data can be swiped.
(Sources: Amazon quietly acquired AI security startup harvest.ai for around $20M. TechCrunch. January 10, 2017.)
Yahoo!
ramps up its secruity chops
Apple ramps up secruity for iCloud users: Account owners will now be warned when someone tries to access their photos
(Daily Mail. September 5, 2014.)
What kind of a father am I, anyway, content to blow bubbles in the backyard rather than doing everything possible to ensure that my daughter arrives at kindergarten equipped with the programming chops necessary to debug a malfunctioning Hokey-Pokey program?
(Newsweek, 1998)
She also hopes her success can open doors for other women she knows who have been honing their production chops in their own home studios.
(USA Today, 2006)
Tall, silver-haired, and immaculately tailored, Lutz combines superb biomechanical abilities (he is an accomplished jet and helicopter pilot as well as a skilled driver) with movie-star presence, great storytelling skills, and well-honed leadership chops.
(Fortune, 2008)

Waymo, the self-driving car startup spun-off from Google late last year, will be deploying its fleet of self-driving Chrysler Pacifica minivans onto public roads for the first time later this month, the company announced at the North American International Auto Show today.
(Andrew J. Hawkins. Google’s new self-driving minivans will be hitting the road at the end of January 2017. The Verge. January 8, 2017.)
But here’s the thing about these minivans. Waymo says that for the first time, its producing all the technology that enables its cars to completely drive themselves in-house. That means for the first time, the Google spin-off is building all its own cameras, sensors, and mapping technology, rather than purchasing parts off the shelf as it had done in the past.
This allows the company to exert more control over its self-driving hardware, as well as bring the cost down to ridiculously cheap levels. In a speech in Detroit, Waymo CEO John Krafcik said that by building its own LIDAR sensors, for example, the company was shaving 90 percent off its costs. That means sensors that Google purchased for $75,000 back in 2009 now only cost $7,500 for Waymo to build itself.
(ibid.)
Light Detection and Ranging、
Laser Image Detection and Ranging
