チョップ！？ ― chop

オンライン小売大手のアマゾンがサイバーセキュリティのベンチャー企業を買収したというニュース記事です。

Yahoo!などのネット企業で情報流出などが相次いでいますが、アマゾンもセキュリティ対策に本腰を入れ始めたというところでしょうか。

ところで冒頭の表現に注目したいのですが、


ramps up its secruity chops


とあります。

"ramp up security"というような表現はよく目にします。例えば以下のような感じです。


Apple ramps up secruity for iCloud users: Account owners will now be warned when someone tries to access their photos

一方、"security chop"という表現は初めて見ました。"chop"の意味が気になるところです。

"chop"には空手チョップで言うところの「チョップ」、即ち、突きや殴打の一撃動作の意味の他、肉料理のポークチャップのような意味がありますが、"security chops"という表現はちょっと変わった表現のように見えます。少なくとも、日本語でセキュリティと「チョップ」とは馴染みません。このような組み合わせの用法があるのかと辞書を引いてみましたが、しっくりくる説明に当たりません。

純粋にコンテクストに照らして解釈すれば、記事の話題はアマゾンがサイバーセキュリティに対する備えを強化しようとしている、ということですから、"security chops"における"chop"は能力とか体制、機能、技術、といった訳語が相応しいと思われますが、この記事に見られる"security chops"のような実例を示してその意味を載せている辞書は見当たりません。（ランダムハウス英和では、米語の口語表現として「才能、技量」という意味を載せています。）

コーパスを検索してみましたが、このような"chop(s)"の用法はかなりレアなケースのように思われました。

こうして用例をいくつか見ていくと何となく"chops"の意味するところが沁みるように馴染んでくるようです。

"hone"（磨きをかける、鋭くする）という動詞と共に使われている用例からは、"chops"が技術、技能という意味とほぼ同義であることが分かります。そうした意味では、このような"chops"の意味はやはり空手チョップと関連していると言えるでしょうか。
