アメリカ航空宇宙局（NASA）が今年7月に火星に送る予定の火星探査機（Mars Rover）の愛称に、
Perseverance
が選ばれたことを複数メディアが報じています。
Meet Perseverance.
The new name has been assigned to NASA's Mars 2020 rover, launching this July and scheduled to land on the red planet in February 2021.
The winning name was entered during a nationwide contest by Alexander Mather, a seventh grade student in Virginia. He will be invited to watch the spacecraft launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida this summer.

火星探査機としては、これまでにCuriosityやOpportunityなどが知られています。今回新しい火星探査機の愛称を公募したところ、2万8千件を超える応募の中から、13歳の男の子が提案した"Perseverance"が採用されました。
Curiosity（好奇心）、Opportunity（機会、チャンス）に続く、"Perseverance"は、忍耐力、とか不屈の努力、などと訳されます。
ちなみに今年7月に打ち上げて、火星への着陸は来年の2月を見込んでいるそうです。
In his essay, 13-year-old Mather wrote, "Curiosity. InSight. Spirit. Opportunity. If you think about it, all of these names of past Mars rovers are qualities we possess as humans. We are always curious, and seek opportunity. We have the spirit and insight to explore the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
"But, if rovers are to be the qualities of us as a race, we missed the most important thing. Perseverance. We as humans evolved as creatures who could learn to adapt to any situation, no matter how harsh. We are a species of explorers, and we will meet many setbacks on the way to Mars. However, we can persevere. We, not as a nation but as humans, will not give up. Even faced with bitter losses such as Opportunity and Vikram 2, the human race will always persevere into the future."

新しい火星探査機の愛称に"Perseverance"を推した男の子は、火星探査に立ちはだかる逆境にも耐え抜く「頑張り」を願いに込めたようです。

今年、2020年のアメリカ大統領選の民主党における候補者選びは、今週火曜日のいわゆるSuper Tuesdayが1つのクライマックスでした。
若手候補だったButtigieg氏が早々に脱落を宣言した後、先頭をひた走るSanders氏を追い抜く格好になったのが、元副大統領のJoe Biden氏です。
Bloomberg氏も戦線離脱を表明、女性候補のWarren氏も、本日の報道によれば、選挙戦からの撤退を検討しているということです。
民主党の候補者選びはBiden氏とSanders氏の2人に絞られたようです。

オブラート
今朝、中学生の娘が唐突に、「オブラート」は英語なの？と質問してきました。
ん？なんで？
聞き返す私に、明確な説明は無かったのですが、今日から新型コロナウィルスの影響で一斉休校となっているため、前の日に学校で話題になったのかもしれません。
音楽用語のビブラートに似ているね、とも言っていました。確かに。
ところで、オブラートは英語だったかな？正直なところ、即答できる知識を持ち合わせていませんでしたので、今日の一語は「オブラート」です。
早速PCの電子辞書で「オブラート」と発音しそうないろんなスペルで調べてみましたが、ヒットせず、結局グーグル先生のお世話に。
画像検索などで見る「オブラート」製品のパッケージに、
oblate
というスペルが確認できました。
ところがこれが間違い、英単語の"oblate"に、カタカナの「オブラート」の意味はなく、偏球、楕円球面とか、献身者（修道会に身を置き修道生活をする非聖職者）とかいう意味で、どう見ても食べるオブラート、あの薄いフィルムのような透き通る包みの意味は見当たりません。
ウィキペディアではオランダ語oblaatに由来するとあり、これは困りました。
それで結局、埃を被った和英辞書を取り出すのですが、「オブラート」の英語は、
wafer
でした。
ウェハースの"wafer"です。薄い膜、フィルムのオブラートという意味では、"wafer sheet"、"wafer paper"というようです。
また、医学・薬学用語では、
cachet
とも表現します。
こちらはフランス語で、"cache"（キャッシュ）という単語とも語源を同じくしているのですが、隠すという意味のフランス語cacherに由来するそうです。
ちなみにドイツ語ではObalateというスペルの単語が「オブラート」を意味するそうで、日本のオブラート製品のパッケージに見えるスペルはドイツ語によるものだと思われます。

Wuhan shake!?
新型コロナウィルスの脅威が高まる中、感染を防止するためには人が密集するようなところを避ける、こまめに手を洗い、うがいをする、など、当たり前の予防策が推奨されています。
これらの予防策に加えて、他人との接触を避けることも行われていますが、握手はそのような行為の1つです。
週末に行われた東京マラソンの表彰式で、確か小池都知事でしたが、優勝者のケニア人ランナーと握手するところ、拳を突き合わせる、いわゆる"fist bump"に代えていたのが印象的でした。
ところで、中国では握手に代えて、"Wuhan shake"(!?)なるスタイルが流行っているようです。
何と、手ではなく、お互いの足を軽く合わせるというものです。

In a clip on Twitter, a group of men wearing face masks can be seen saying hello to each other by quickly tapping their feet together.
“People in China found another way to greet since they can’t shake hands,” wrote one user alongside a video of the “Wuhan Shake.”
“I love how people can adapt and keep a sense of humor about stressful situations.”
The video, which has nearly 29,000 views, took off on social media where others applauded the creative welcome.
“That’s a great idea and you don’t need hand sanitizer,” wrote one user.
“Be prepared for a mass outbreak of athlete’s foot!” another Twitter user joked.

買占め ― bulk-buying
新型コロナウィルスによる感染が拡大する中で、マスク需要が急増し品薄、もしくは欠品する自体が続いています。
また、トイレットペーパーまでもが品薄になるという根拠のない流言がSNSなどを通じて広まり、買い占める動きが出ているとも報じられています。
マスク需要は海外でも高まっているようで、CNNの記事が目に留まりました。
(CNN) — Panic over the novel coronavirus is hitting a fever pitch in the US. And despite repeated pleas from health officials not to purchase them, Americans can't stop snatching up masks and respirators.
The mask boom has prompted sellers to jack up prices and exploit demand. This has meant a shortage for medics who need them. And Chinese Americans are buying in bulk to send to their families overseas.
"We need to make sure those N95 masks are available for the doctors and nurses that are going to be taking care of individuals that have this illness," Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield said during a House Foreign Affairs hearing on Thursday. "And it really does displease me, to find people going out, there is no role for these masks in the community."
