ー get-up

It's that time of year when celebrities apologize for their offensive Halloween costumes.

So, who's immediately regretting her choice of holiday wear this year? That would be Hilary Duff, who attended the Casamigos Halloween Party Friday in Beverly Hills. The Younger and Lizzie Maguire star went out with her boyfriend, trainer Jason Walsh, dressed as a pilgrim and a Native American. She had on a short black outfit, and he wore a feather headdress and face paint.
(Hilary Duff is 'SO sorry' about her offensive Halloween costume. USA Today. October 31, 2016.)

And so, Duff tweeted that she was "SO sorry" for offending people with her get-up. "It was not properly thought through," she said.
(ibid.)

Merriam-Webster

an unusual outfit or costume

eat one's words

A North Carolina grandma was just trying to teach her husband a lesson on wasteful spending on Saturday when she forked over $10 for a scratch-off lottery ticket.

But the lesson backfired and Glenda Blackwell, 57, won a cool $1M after purchasing a winning Carolina Millions ticket from her local Leicester Suttles Quik Mart.

"I was going to be ugly and buy a scratch off to show him they didn't hit," Blackwell told WLOS.

Blackwell bought the ticket in an effort to get her husband Buddy to save his money after he asked her to buy him two Powerball tickets.

"I had to eat my words, but they were worth eating," Blackwell quipped.
(Alexandra Klausner. Grandma wins $1M lottery while teaching husband not to play. New York Post. October 26, 2016.)

had to eat my words

pull up

Of course Bob Dylan ignored the Nobel Prize, he’s the the antithesis of a pop icon

Bob Dylan is being taken to task for his silence after he was announced the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, but as Alan Franks writes, the impact of his work cannot be denied – and his aplomb here is just part of the package。

It had to happen. Someone in the Swedish Academy just had to pull Bob Dylan up on his manners.
(Alan Franks. Of course Bob Dylan ignored the Nobel Prize, he’s the the antithesis of a pop icon. The Independent. October 26, 2016.)

To check the action of: The remark pulled him up short.

― lights-out

The heyday of Apple's lights-out iPhone growth has passed.

Since introducing the hugely popular iPhone 6 two years ago, the tech giant has labored to spark the intense consumer passion it has counted on to make the iPhone an even-better seller year after year.

Apple is still struggling to reignite interest. The iPhone 7, which went on sale last month, has an improved camera and is water resistant. But it looks an awful lot like the iPhone 6, and that may not give consumers enough enticement to upgrade.
(Ben Fox Rubin. iPhone sales slump. Apple still raking in billions. CNET. October 25, 2016.)

lights-out

if a machine or manufacturing process runs lights-out, it is controlled by a computer and does not need a human to be present in order to operate or supervise it

A little dishonesty goes a long way. Scientists who studied the brain activity of people who told small lies to benefit themselves found that these fibs appeared to pave the way to telling whoppers later.

The findings, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, demonstrate how self-serving lies can escalate and offer a window into the processes in the brain at work.

It’s commonly held wisdom that small transgressions often lead to bigger and bigger ones, study coauthor Tali Sharot of University College London said in a news briefing.
(Amina Khan. Neuroscientists show how tiny fibs snowball into big lies. Los Angeles Times. October 24, 2016.)

whopper
