The artist who painted a 4-story-tall penis on a Lower East Side building is crying censorship because it was painted over.
“The pieces were commissioned by [Lower East Side art group] The New Allen,” Swedish artist Carolina Falkholt told The Post through a Facebook message after her mural was covered up in gray paint by the building’s owner. “As a trained graffiti writer I am used to my work being censored in different contexts.”
She painted the 40-foot-tall member on the side of 303 Broome St. on Christmas Eve. It grossed out neighbors for three days before it was taken down Wednesday evening.

ニューヨークの街中のビル外壁に巨大な「男性のシンボル」が出現したのはクリスマスイブの日だったようです。
ビルのオーナーがすぐに上からペンキを塗って消すと、描いたアーティストの女性は抗議した模様です。
飽くまでも、アートであるという主張なのでしょう。

の、”shaft”というのは普通の意味では、道具などの柄の部分のことを意味しますが、ここでは、
不当な扱い（harsh or unfair treatment）
という意味です。
また、”shaft”にはスラングとして男性器の意味もあるそうですから、それにかけたものかもしれません。

gizmo
無線による充電が初めて実用化されたようです。アメリカで認可されたとのことです。
Drop the plug and forget the mat — the Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday approved a wireless gizmo that lets people charge their smartphones and other devices from up to 3 feet away.
The Energous Corporation’s Watt Up device lets users charge their electronics without being connected to the charger through the use of radio frequencies — a first, The Hill reported.

いわゆる「ワイヤレス充電」は既に実用化されていますが、デバイスと充電器の物理的な接触が必要とされています。
新しい技術では、そのような物理的接触を不要とし、完全に無線で充電が可能だということです。（既存の「ワイヤレス」というのはコードの接続が不要、ということですね。）

A Florida man was arrested Friday after he reportedly punched an ATM because it “was giving him too much money” during an incident in November.
Michael Joseph Oleksik, 23, was charged with criminal mischief after Wells Fargo requested Cocoa Police press charges against the man.
Law enforcement told Florida Today that Oleksik was seen on surveillance footage “standing at the ATM, pummeling the electronic teller’s touch screen on Nov. 29.”

改めて思ったのですが、銀行の窓口担当者のことを何故、”teller”というのでしょうか？
辞書を引くと、”tell”という動詞の原義は、「数える」という意味だったようです。ドイツ語のzahlen（意味はto count）に由来しています。

トレードオフ ー trade-off
クリスマスは終わりましたが、アメリカではイブの24日から北東部で吹雪となり、荒れた天候だったようです。
CHICAGO -- If you live in the Northeast or Midwest, you're not dreaming: It's looking like a white Christmas. But the trade-off is hazardous driving conditions across New England and the Great Plains. Out west, the Rocky Mountains have been pounded this weekend.
The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning through 5 p.m. on Monday for portions of central and northern Maine. Forecasters warned that snow and wind gusts up to 50 mph could make travel "dangerous to impossible."
In other parts of New England a winter storm warning was in effect, with up to a foot of snow possible in some areas.

クリスマスに雪が降るとロマンチックな印象がありますが、降り方によってはそうとばかりは言ってられません。
ホワイトクリスマスというのは穏やかな話であって、猛吹雪ともなれば・・・。

「トレードオフ」というのは二律背反という日本語訳が相当するのですが、これは言わば、こちらを立てればあちらが立たず、という状況のことを指します。
Merriam-Webster Dictionaryの定義で、
something that you do not want but must accept in order to have something that you want
とあるのが分かりやすいと思いました。
雪が降って交通機関に影響が出るのは困る、けれどもホワイトクリスマスは嬉しい、という矛盾した状況ですね。

財務省長官へのビッグなクリスマスプレゼント！？ ― manure
米・財務省長官のムニューシン氏にビッグなクリスマスプレゼント！！
ではありませんでした・・・。
LOS ANGELES -- Police on Saturday investigated a suspicious package addressed to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, CBS Los Angeles reports. The package was found on Bel Air Road, near Mnuchin's home, in Los Angeles.
The package was gift-wrapped and filled with manure, police say, CBS Los Angeles' Cristy Fajardo reports.
The package was found at a neighbor's home but was addressed to Mnuchin, which police say raised alarm bells.
LAPD officers, the bomb squad and the Secret Service poured into the area.

長官の住まいがあるLos AngelesのBel Airというところは超高級住宅街らしいですが、政府高官の自宅前に届けられたクリスマスギフトが怪しいということで、警察の爆発物処理班が出動する騒ぎとなったようです。
結果、プレゼントの中身は"manure"だったそうですが、"manure"って何だったけ？
ということで、改めて辞書を引くことになったのですが、"manure"は
肥やし、肥料
の意味です。
スペルから、"manual"とか"maneuver"という単語が浮かんでくるのですが、語源的に正しい発想です。ラテン語で手を意味するmanusから来ています。
堆肥を意味する"manure"はこれらの単語と同根であり、肥やしを使って土地を耕すという行為は人間が手で行う労働であるということから来ているのです。
"manure"は元々土地を耕す行為を意味していましたが、その後、耕す際に用いる堆肥を指す意味も獲得しました。
しかし、政府高官に大量の肥料、つまりは”ウ〇コ”を送りつけるとは、やはり嫌がらせの類でしょうか。報道ではそのあたりについて触れていませんが・・・。
