not a week goes by without ~

いつもは知らなかった単語や単語の意外な用法を取り上げるのですが、今日は単語ではなくて、表現について取り上げたいと思います。

下記の引用をどうぞ。

So, to make the process that much simpler on your end (but not any potential hacker's end, hopefully) Google has announced a streamlined method for approving sign-in requests. Google Prompt, as 9to5Google is calling the service, allows you to approve these requests with a simple yes or no pop-up, rather than receiving a confirmation email, text or setting up a separate security key.

冒頭に、


(It seems like) not a week goes by without news of a major password hack


とある部分、日本語に訳すとすれば、


パスワードがハッキングされたというニュースを聞かずに1週間が過ぎ去ってしまうということはない


というような感じ（かなり直訳調ですが）になりますが、よくある英語の二重否定の構文であり、


パスワードがハッキングされたというニュースを聞かない週はない（つまり、毎週のようにパスワードのハッキングのニュースを耳にする）


という解釈になります。

この構文は、


not a week goes by without xxx


という形であると分析できます。

ちなみに、"week"の部分は、"day"だったり、"month"、はたまた"year"もありえるようです。（また、"hour"、"minute"もあります。）

二重否定の構文とならない用法もあります。


Twenty harrowing minutes went by without any aid in sight.

感覚的にお分かりいただけると思いますが、二重否定の場合は強意で用いられる場合が多いので、"year"や"month"よりも、"hour"、"day"、"week"、等が用いられることが多くなります。
