動詞？ ― trial

馬鹿げた話だと思いました。引用からどうぞ。


For the average pedestrian, it's immensely hard to look up from an Instagram scroll when you need to, say, cross a four-lane freeway.

That's why the New South Wales state government is looking to trial ground level traffic lights at key crossings in Sydney, Australia from December.

Fed up with pedestrians who can't take their eyes off the screen, the government is obliged nevertheless to try and save their lives. It will implement a six month trial of the traffic lights at a cost of A$250,000.

スマホ画面ばかり見ている歩行者が交通事故に巻き込まれることを防止するために、信号を地面に設置するというアイデアがあるそうです。オーストラリア・シドニーでは、今年12月から6ヶ月間の「トライアル」を計画しているとのこと。

通常、信号機というのは支柱に取り付けられており、顔を上げていなければ確認できませんが、スマホ画面ばかり見ている歩行者には地面にあったほうが目に付きやすい、ということでしょう。

繰り返しますが、馬鹿げた話です。

さて、今日取り上げたいのは"trial"なのですが、記事中の用例に着目したいと思います。

とある部分の、"trial"は動詞として使われています。

ここで疑問。"trial"は名詞じゃないの？動詞は、"try"じゃないの？

一応辞書をあたりました。

Merriam-Webster、またAmerican Heritageに、"trial"のエントリで動詞（Verb）はありません。

一方ランダムハウス英和では、


〈新製品などを〉テストする


という他動詞の意味が載っていました。また、Oxford Dictionary（オンライン）でも、


to test the ability, quality or performance of something to see if it will be effective or successful


という動詞のエントリがありました。

う～ん、ちょっと納得いきませんが言葉というのは変わっていくものですから、"trial"が動詞として使われるのも実際の用例を反映してのことなのでしょうか。

コーパスで検索してみると動詞としての"trial"の用法は1990年代くらいから確認ができるので、それほど最近のことではなさそうです。

しかしながら、動詞としての変化形はあまり一定しておらず、過去形には、"trialed"もあれば"trialled"もあり、進行形でも"trialing"あり、"trialling"あり、といったところです。

元々、"trial"の接尾辞-alは、たとえば、


refuse -> refusal
deny -> denial


のように、動詞から名詞を作るための接尾辞です。
