Volkswagen AG’s lavish parties typically featured a surprise guest, from the Pet Shop Boys to Robbie Williams to Justin Timberlake. Now the music is about to stop.
The parade of global pop stars was part of a culture of spending at the world’s biggest carmaker. Confronted with billions in repairs and fines from an engine-rigging scandal, Chief Executive Officer Matthias Mueller vowed on Tuesday to put everything that’s not absolutely vital on hold. Addressing 20,000 workers at Volkswagen’s main Wolfsburg factory in Germany, Mueller prepared the crowd for “massive savings,” in what would “not be a painless process.”
(Elisabeth Behrmann. VW Stops the Music as Diesel Scandal Buries Culture of Spending. Bloomberg. October 7, 2015.)
VW Stops the Music
Inf. Stop everything!; Hold it! (Presses refers to the printing presses used to print newspapers. This means that there is recent news of such magnitude that the presses must be stopped so a new edition can be printed immediately.)

― do the dishes
While not all of us are a huge fan of doing the dishes, this routine household chore may help improve our state of being and relieve us from stress, says a new study now published in Mindfulness.
A team of researchers from Florida State University has decided to identify if washing the dishes can promote peace of mind, relieve stress, and encourage mindfulness.
(Relax! Wash the Dishes. Your Health. October 4, 2015.)
do the dishes
washing the dishes"でもいいのですが、"do the dishes"という表現が定着しているようです。

phubbing
Attending to your smartphone while spending time with a romantic partner may have a far greater cost than you imagine. Recently researchers at Texas’s Baylor University have found that use of cellphone can ruin romantic relationships and increase depression. ‘When you think about the results, they are astounding,’ said James Roberts, professor of Marketing at Baylor, ‘Something as common as cellphone use can undermine the bedrock of our happiness – our relationships with our romantic partners,’ Roberts noted. For his study, Roberts and colleagues conducted two separate surveys, accounting for a total of 453 adults in the US, to learn the relational effects of ‘Phubbing’ – or ‘partner phone snubbing.’
(Alexa Mason. Phubbing: How Smartphone Behavior Can Impact Your Romantic Relationships. SavingAdvice.com. October 4, 2015.)

ride shotgun
Nothing to see here, just a bear riding in the backseat of a passenger car!
A motorist in the central Russian city of Yekaterinburg captured amazing video of a brown bear in the backseat of a Volga car, sticking its head out the window and playing with a human passenger.
Local police said they’re not going to cite the driver because the bear had seat belts on, and thus wasn’t breaking any laws, according to Central European News.
When the video was shot, Russia’s famed Filatov circus — which specializes in performing bears — just happened to be in town, CEN reported.
(David K. Li. Is that a bear riding shotgun in car on Russian highway? New York Post. September 30, 2015.)

hook
Finding a way to wean America’s 42.1 million adult smokers from their deadly habit is one of the great challenges in public health. But a new study offers hope that a trick proposed 2 decades ago – dialing back the nicotine that smokers get from their cigarettes – might help many quit, and steer others toward less dangerous means of feeding their addiction.
The new research, published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, also offers reassurance that smokers restricted to very low-nicotine cigarettes will not smoke more, nor inhale more deeply, to get the same addictive hit.
By finding a level of nicotine at which cigarettes lose their addictive hook, the research has gotten closer to “breaking the relationship between nicotine and this deadly product.”
(Can drastically reduced nicotine take the ‘hook’ out of cigarettes? Saukvalley.com. September 30, 2015.)
Can drastically reduced nicotine take the ‘hook’ out of cigarettes?
