Nothing to see here, just a bear riding in the backseat of a passenger car!

A motorist in the central Russian city of Yekaterinburg captured amazing video of a brown bear in the backseat of a Volga car, sticking its head out the window and playing with a human passenger.

Local police said they’re not going to cite the driver because the bear had seat belts on, and thus wasn’t breaking any laws, according to Central European News.

When the video was shot, Russia’s famed Filatov circus — which specializes in performing bears — just happened to be in town, CEN reported.

記事にビデオが掲載されていますが、確かにホンモノのクマが乗用車に乗っているようです。

さて、記事のタイトルに


Is that a bear riding shotgun in car on Russian highway?


とあるのですが、やや戸惑いました。"shotgun"という単語にひっかかったのです。何を言いたいのか、記事の本文を読んでもよくつかめず、"riding shotgun"というフレーズがあるのだ、ということが分かるまでに時間がかかったのです。

構文からして、"shotgun"は"riding"を修飾すると考えざるを得ませんが、“ショットガン”にそんな意味があるとは想像だにしなかったのです。

お手持ちの辞書にも載っているかと思います。車両の助手席に座ることを、"riding shotgun"と表現するそうです。

この表現の語源は興味深く、かつて馬車などで移動する際に、敵や盗賊に襲われるのを警戒し、馬車の馭者（つまりドライバー）の横には武器を持った人間がサポートのために座ったそうです。つまりこれが現代における車両の助手席になるのですが、時代は馬車から自動車になっても助手席というものはそういう役割が期待されているという訳です。

ところで、「乗用車のクマ」については、助手席ではなく、"backseat"（後部座席）とあるのですが、記事のライターは"riding shotgun"を誤用したのでしょうか？

想像ですが、クマを同乗させることで、ある意味“ショットガン”よりも強力な用心棒を雇ったとも言えるわけで、ライターのしゃれなのかもしれません。
