"rat out"という俗語表現をご存知でしょうか？
裏切る、とか密告する、という意味で使われます。
下記に引用するのはいわゆる「人生相談」みたいなコーナーの記事ですが、タイトルに"rat out"という表現が使われています。
My boss recently took a bunch of us out for drinks, and at the end of the evening he asked me to put it on my company credit card. That felt weird — like he was trying to hide the fact we spent a lot of money. I paid, but feel like I’m now on the hook if the charge is ever questioned. What should I have done?

会社の経費を不当に使っている上司が悩みの種のようです。コンプライアンスへの意識が高まり、世間からの監視も厳しくなった今日、記事で取りざたされているような事例は恐らく“アウト”でしょう。（"rat out"とかけたしゃれではありませんが・・・。）
ところで、なぜ裏切りが"rat out"なのでしょうか？

マレーシア航空機の残骸？を発見 ― fuselage
クアラルンプール発北京行きのマレーシア航空の旅客機が消息を絶ったのは2014年3月のことでした。以降、事故なのかテロなのか、どこに墜落してしまったのかもわからず1年半以上が経過しました。
ところが、不明機のものと思われる残骸がフィリピンのジャングルで見つかったというニュースが入ってきました。
Plane wreckage containing 'many skeletons' and painted with the Malaysian flag has reportedly been found in the Philippines, prompting speculation it could be missing Flight MH370.
Police confirmed they had received reports of the discovery in thick jungle on the remote island of Sugbai in Tawi-Tawi province.
An audio technician, Jamil Omar, contacted police in Malaysia to say his aunt, Siti Kayam, had stumbled upon the wreckage while she and others were hunting for birds.
Police commissioner Jalaludin Abdul Rahman, based in neighbouring Borneo, said the woman claimed she climbed into the smashed fuselage and saw skeletons.

"fuselage"という見慣れない単語を取り上げます。"fuselage"というのは（飛行機の）機体のことです。ここではおそらく翼が取れてしまった胴体部分だけのことを指しているものと思われます。
（翼が取れてしまったと）なぜ分かる？
"fuselage"の語源はフランス語fuseだそうですが、元々の意味は糸紡ぎの軸棒を指すものだったそうです。その紡錘形（チューブのような形状）から、機体の胴体部分が"fuselage"と呼ばれるようになったのです。
ちなみに爆弾の信管を意味する"fuse"（電気のヒューズとはまた別です）も、その形状から生まれたものです。
ところで、不明機の残骸とされるニュースについて、事実ならばトップニュースの扱いかと思いますが、情報の信憑性に疑問符がついているらしく、どうもそうではなさそうです。
詳しくは記事をお読みいただければと思いますが、これまでの捜索過程（唯一の残骸として、翼部と見られる残骸がインド洋のReunion島で見つかっています）からすると、機体部分がフィリピンのジャングルで見つかるというのは考えにくいことだそうです。

mommy track
体育の日の三連休、いかがお過ごしだったでしょうか？今日は連休の最終日で、上りの高速道が混雑しているというニュースを聞きながらこれを書いています。会社勤めの多くの方が明日から出勤かと思います。
明日からの仕事を前にした話題として顰蹙かもしれませんが、"mommy track"という表現があるのをご存知でしょうか？
子育てという制約（これはあくまで企業側からの見方ですが）がある女性は会社での昇進コースから外れてしまうことを言う表現です。
On the other hand, the longer a woman stays out of the labour force, the more likely she is to land on the "mommy track," or in low-paying labour, thus reinforcing the gender pay gap, as a recent analysis by UBC researcher Paul Kershaw pointed out.

cadaver dog
警察犬は英語で"police dog"です。もちろんそれで正しいのですが、英語では"cadaver dog"と言う表現もよく使われます。
"cadaver dog"というのは、遺体（死体）を捜索するように訓練された警察犬のことです。
A search of the couple's home turned up bloodstains and evidence of blood splatter on the walls, cops said. Cadaver dogs also indicated the presence of possible human remains, according to an arrest report obtained by PEOPLE. The friend also says that the canal behind the couple's home was raked, but she doesn't believe authorities found anything.

不景気に怯えるVWのお膝元 ― lean times
昨日に引き続き、排出ガス不正操作のスキャンダルに揺れる独・フォルクスワーゲン社に関するニュースを引用します。

VW’s vast global headquarters, along with an auto plant so big it could fit Monaco under its roof, are the engines that drive this city of 125,000. Injected with VW cash, the local soccer team went from third rate to first tier. Thousands of residents live in apartments built by the auto giant. A $500 million Volkswagen theme park — think Disney meets Detroit — lures 2.2 million visitors a year.
But in the wake of an emissions scandal that could cost Volkswagen billions of euros in fines and recalls, this company town is suddenly bracing for something that had become virtually unknown here in recent years: lean times.

こうなってしまうとウォルフスブルクにとって懸念されるのは、
lean times
なのです。
"lean times"とは平たく言うと「不景気」のことです。（告白すると、"lean times"が「不景気」という意味だということを、不勉強にして知りませんでした。）
"lean"には、痩せている、という意味がありますが、むしろ（体が）引き締まっている、などと言うように、どちらかと言えばポイジティブな意味が印象にありました。実は、不毛な、とか乏しい、という意味のネガティブな意味もあります。
さて、"lean times"ですが、"lean times ahead"というイディオムです。"ahead"ということで、これから先の話ということなのですが、VW社の関係者は覚悟しなければならないでしょう。
