最初はスルーしたのですがどうしても気になって仕方がないので取り上げます。

Regardless, most of us hoard a stash of the soft-tipped paper sticks; they seem so perfectly suited to that dirty job.

耳かき、の話です。

10年くらい前のことですが、アメリカに短期で滞在した際にどうしても耳かきがしたくなったのですが、自宅に置いてきた竹製の耳かきがどうしても欲しくなりました。あちこちのスーパーや雑貨店やらを探し回ったのですが入手できず、同僚からも「アメリカでは耳かきなんかしない。危ないから止めたほうがいい」と諭される始末でした。

記事ではやはり耳かきの危険性について説明しており、竹製や金属製の耳かきは言うに及ばず、綿棒（cotton swabs）も良くないと説いています。

さて、気になる表現として、


information for patients in the guidelines say no to putting anything smaller than your elbow in your ear


という部分があります。

"anything smaller than your elbow"とは変わった表現ですね。直訳すれば、肘よりも小さい（細い）もの、ということになるでしょうか。

気になったので辞書を引いてみましたがこの表現を解説している辞書は見当たりません。一方、"smaller than your elbow"という表現は、こと耳かきの危険性に関する警告としては人口に膾炙しているようで、多くの用例がネットの検索でヒットしました。

この表現の起源についてもっともらしい説明を見つけられないでいるのですが、耳かきを持つ手（hand）や腕（arm）ではなく"elbow"が出てくるのは独特の感覚のように思えます。もっと言えば、耳かきに使われる道具は指よりも細い訳ですから、"smaller than your finger"でも良さそうなものですが、なぜ"elbow"なのでしょう。

ご存知の方がおられましたら教えて下さい。

ちなみに、"sharper than your elbow"、または逆説的に（！？）"bigger than your elbow"という用例もあるようです。

ネット小売業最大手のアマゾンが服飾のプライベートブランドを立ち上げるそうです。


SAN FRANCISCO — Amazon seems to be becoming a clothes horse.

The Seattle online retailer has been building out its wardrobe of private clothing lines for some time and now it looks to be adding athletic wear to the rack.

Tech site Recode reported Wednesday that Amazon is hiring brand managers with a “passion for sport, athletes and those living an active lifestyle” who can help it "build authentic activewear private label brands that have compelling and unique DNA and deliver amazing consumer valued innovation.”

The addition would bring to nine the number of affordable private label clothing lines Amazon offers. The company began quietly rolling them out in February. The most recently added — called Buttoned Down — offers men's button down shirts in the $40 to $50 price range.

引用した部分の冒頭に出てくる、"a clothes horse"とは何のことでしょうか？

"clothes horse"というのは、服を掛けたり干したりする道具のことなんですが、日本で言えば物干し竿に近い物です。外国にショートステイなどされたことのある方は馴染みがあるかもしれませんが、海外では日本のように吊るタイプの物干しよりも、床に設置するタイプの物干しをよく見かけます。

その道具は使わない時は畳んで場所を取らないような設計になっていますが、広げて使う際の形状が馬（horse）のように見えるので、"clothes horse"という訳です。

用途としては物干しというのもありますが、着る服を掛けておくスタンドとしての用途もあり、これが転じて、「オシャレに敏感な人」という意味になったようです。

jawbone

自動車メーカーのフォード社がかねてより計画していたメキシコでの工場建設計画を白紙撤回し、アメリカ国内に工場建設すると発表しました。

トランプ次期大統領の圧力に方針転換した格好です。

"jawbone(ing)"という表現が使われています。文字通りに訳せば「顎の骨」となりますが、どのような意味があるのでしょうか？

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryを検索しますと、


the use of public appeals (as by a president) to influence the actions especially of business and labor leaders; broadly : the use of spoken persuasion


という定義が載っており、権力者が自身の見解、意見表明により雇用者などのビジネスリーダーの行動に影響を与えること、ということです。

つまり、権力者の意見なので無視出来なくなり、結果従わざるを得なくなる、ということですね。

「顎の骨」が何故このような意味になるのでしょうか？

Merriam-Websterに由来の説明がありました。

"jawbone"は元々、credit（クレジット、信用）という意味で使われていたそうです。これは、他人に金を借りる際に相手を口で説得していたからで、顎の骨というのは話す事、説得力のメタファーなのです。

この意味が次第に変容してきて、"jawbone"が権力者や富裕層による目的達成のためのレトリックという意味に発展したのは1960年代後半のことだそうです。

bromance

"bromance"という単語をご存知でしょうか。私は初めて見ました。

用例を見てみましょう。

対談のスクリプトからの引用で、しかも途中からなので分かりにくいかと思いますが、トランプ次期大統領とロシアのプーチン大統領の関係についてコメントしたものです。

最近の報道でご存知のように、オバマ大統領は、アメリカ大統領選挙においてロシアがコンピュータネットワークに侵入して不正を働いたとして、ロシア人関係者を国外退去としました。ロシアの国家的関与があったとまで指摘し、プーチン大統領を批判しましたが、プーチン大統領は報復的措置を取らないとの声明を出したということです。

そして、トランプ氏はこのプーチン大統領の判断をツイッターの投稿で称賛したと報じられているのですが、トランプ氏とプーチン大統領の親密な関係については以前から話題です。

"bromance"という単語はちゃんと辞書にも載っていて、


a close nonsexual friendship between men
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)


とあり、つまり男同士の非常に親密な関係のことを指します。

brotherを意味するbrosとromanceのかばん語です。

酉年のスタート ー rooster

新年おめでとうございます。2017年、酉年が、スタートしました。

酉年の英語ですが、Year of Birdと言うのかと思っていたら、Year of Roosterと言うようですね。


President-elect Donald Trump may have ruffled feathers in Beijing with criticism on trade and Taiwan, but he seems to have struck a chord with the Chinese public.

With the Year of the Rooster approaching, a Trump-inspired sculpture is on display at a shopping centre in Taiyuan, Shanxi province.

The designer told Chinese media he was inspired by both his iconic hairstyle and hand gestures.

中国で、アメリカ次期大統領のトランプ氏に模した鶏の彫像が話題になっているそうです。

また、杭州市にあるサファリパークでは、トランプ氏のヘアースタイルそっくりの金髪の毛を頭部に戴いたキジがネットで話題になっているということです。（かなり似ています。）

ちなみに、英語のRoosterには、自惚れの強い男という意味があります。
