トランプ米大統領は先週の就任後から次々と大統領令を出し、関係各国や影響を受ける立場の人たちは戦々恐々です。
まさに公約通りの実行力とも言えるのですが、その影響は計り知れません。今日はメキシコとの国境に壁を建設するという大統領令に署名したことが報じられました。選挙期間中は壁の建設費はメキシコ側に負担させる、と強行に主張していましたが、メキシコは拒否しています。
今日の記事によると、建設費の負担は輸入関税の形で賦課するというアイデアが浮上しているそうです。

とありますが、ここで"float"という動詞の意味に注目したいと思います。
本文では、
Trump is considering a 20% tax
となっていますので、"float"の意味は"consider"と同じかとも思われるのですが、辞書を引いてみると、"（考え･計画などを）提案する、持ち出す＂という意味があることを知りました。
"float"というと水に浮かぶという意味がまっさきに思い浮かびますが、こんな意味でも使われるとは知らず勉強不足を恥じます。

先日の話題とも関連しますが、ソーシャルメディアへの投稿がきっかけで職を失ったり、逮捕されてしまう事態になることが珍しくない時代になりました。
ネットでの不用意な一言が原因で困った状況に陥ることもあるのだと肝に銘じるべきでしょう。

第45代アメリカ大統領に就任したドナルド・トランプ氏には5人の子供がいるそうですが、現在の妻であるメラニアさんとの間に生まれたのはバロン君という10歳の男の子だけだそうです。
そのバロン君を巡って一騒動が起きました。
テレビ番組の脚本家がツイッターに投稿したバロン君を貶す発言で「炎上」し、投稿した本人は謝罪に追い込まれ、無期限謹慎という処分に発展したそうです。

このニュースを週末に見たのですが、問題となったツイッターの投稿内容である、
Barron will be this country's first homeschool shooter
が何を言わんとしているのか、よく分からないでいました。
発言が批判された背景として、大統領本人に対する中傷ならばまだしも、その家族、しかもまだ10歳の子供に対しての中傷というのは大人気ない、そんなところは大体想像がつくところでしたが、"homeschool shooter"が何を指すのか分からなかったのです。
1時間ほど、手持ちの辞書やグーグル検索など、色々調べて、ようやく"school shooting"という表現が存在することを知りました。
Merriam-WebsterやAmerican Heritageなどの辞書には載っていないのですが、"school shooting"とは、
a violent act, in which someone, usually a student, uses a gun to kill or injure friends, teachers, and staff
(Mcmillan Dictionary)
ということで、"shooter"とは銃で撃つことそのものでした。
何の根拠もなく犯罪者予備軍のような中傷をしているのは驚きです。
また、"homeschool"とは、学校に通わず、自宅で学習することを指しており、これは大統領就任に伴って、トランプ一家が自宅のあるニューヨークからワシントンD.C.に引っ越すことからバロン君の転校についても話題になったことと関連しているのですが、当面はニューヨークの学校に通うことが決まっているらしく、事実誤認であると言われています。
ちなみに、"first"の部分は"First Lady"の"first"であり、悪意に満ちた発言と言わざるを得ません。

サムスン製のスマートフォンが過熱して自然発火するという事故が相次いだのは去年のことでしたが、つい先日事故原因に関する正式な報告がなされたようです。
NEW YORK—Following an investigation that took months, Samsung Electronics has revealed the root causes behind those exploding Note 7 phones: design and manufacturing flaws associated with the lithium-ion batteries used in the phones, which were produced by Samsung’s battery suppliers.
The company released the findings at a press conference in Seoul late Sunday.

The Note 7 debacle has been a black eye for Samsung. The phones had to be recalled not once, but twice, before ultimately being put out to pasture. The episode damaged the Samsung brand and cost the company at least $5.3 billion.

"put someone out to grass"とも言うそうです。

running late
先週のことですが、予定されていた社内の会議の時間繰り下げの知らせをメールで受け取りました。
出席予定であった海外からの同僚の都合によるものでした。会議主催者からのメールでは、どうやらその同僚は会議開始時刻に間に合わなくなったと連絡してきたということでした。
そして主催者が言うには、「走っているけど遅れる」と言ってきている、ということなのでした。
なるほど、遅れては申し訳ないので、走って少しでも速く到着しようとしているのだな、と思いきや、転送されてきたメールの該当箇所は以下のようなものでした。
I am running a little late for our meeting today. Please could you move our meeting later by an hour.
．．．笑ってしまいました。
主催者は"running a little late"を走っているけど遅れる、と翻訳したのです。
ご存知の方には釈迦に説法ですが、"running late"は必ずしも走る（脚を使って駆ける）ことを意味しません。
"run late"で、単に遅れているという意味なのです。
You might think that bringing cellphone service and Wi-Fi to New York City’s underground subway stations would be met with a standing ovation from riders.
