tough cookie

President Trump hosted his third wide-ranging rally of the midterm season in Montana on Thursday night, where he urged voters to "never forget Benghazi" and praised Republican Rep. Greg Gianforte, who pleaded guilty to body slamming a reporter last year, as a "tough cookie."
(Trump praises 'tough cookie' Montana rep who 'body slammed' reporter last year, urges voters to 'never forget Benghazi.’ Fox News. October 19, 2018.)

tough cookie

Even as he talks tough on North Korea, Trump called Kim Jong Un a "smart cookie" and wondered why he won't be his friend.
(USA Today, 2017)

They didn't like what he did to the kids so they padded up the charges. We're going to file multiple charges. We get him on one of them. That's what happens. I mean, this guy is a bad guy. He's a bad cookie.

hold one's feet to the fire

It is now clear the Trump administration will not be holding Saudi feet to the fire over the disappearance of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Instead, it’s looking to give them an off-ramp, a route to escape responsibility.

Having waffled between promising “severe punishment” for any official Saudi involvement and speculating about “rogue killers,” President Trump finally revealed his own mind on Tuesday: he compared the international pressure on Riyadh to the allegations of sexual assault against Judge Brett Kavanaugh ahead of his confirmation to the Supreme Court.
(Bobby Ghosh. Who Will Hold Saudi Feet to the Fire? Bloomberg. October 18, 2018.)

Who Will Hold Saudi Feet to the Fire?

holding Saudi feet to the fire over the disappearance of the journalist

posthumous

Stephen Hawking has a final message for humanity: If robots don’t get us, climate change will.

Hawking, who died at age 76 of a degenerative neurological disease earlier this year, offers his parting thoughts in a posthumously published book called Brief Answers To The Big Questions, which comes out Tuesday. It’s a message worth heeding from a man who is probably the most renowned scientist since Einstein, best known for his discovery of how black holes function. Hawking’s book A Brief History of Time sold more than 10 million copies and tackled questions as big as “How did the universe begin?” and “What will happen when it ends?” in language simple enough for the average reader.
(Abigail Higgins. Stephen Hawking’s final warning for humanity: AI is coming for us. VOX. October 16, 2018.)

posthumous(ly)

nigh

It appears that the end is nigh for embattled retailer Sears.

On Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the company has hired advisors to help it prepare for a possible bankruptcy filing as early as this week.
(Mary Hanbury. Sears, once the largest retailer in the world, is closing hundreds of stores and reportedly planning to file for bankruptcy. Here’s how it got there. Business Insider. October 13, 2018.)

It appears that the end is nigh for embattled retailer Sears.

The Great American Eclipse is nigh! Millions are expected to pack the so-called path of totality, or the swath of the United States that will be able to experience the complete solar eclipse.
(Washington Post, 2017)

The local halibut sportfishing season is nigh and may seem tempting, under the circumstances. But those who seek to catch halibut, according to Seattle Times outdoors reporter Mark Yuasa, sometimes call them "barn doors," because it's like trying to reel one of those up from the ocean floor.

disenfranchise

As a crisis of potential voter suppression in Georgia deepened, the Democratic candidate for governor accused her opponent of seeking to disenfranchise people of color and women by creating a “miasma of fear” around voting.

Stacey Abrams, who if elected would become the first African American woman governor of any state, is running against Georgia’s Republican secretary of state, Brian Kemp.

A lawsuit filed by civil rights groups on Thursday accused Kemp of seeking to disenfranchise more than 50,000 voters, up to 80% of them minority voters, by suspending voters from registration rolls if records held by various state agencies show any slight discrepancy in how a voter’s name is hyphenated, spelled or spaced.
(Stacey Abrams: GOP opponent creating 'miasma of fear' over voting in Georgia. The Guardian. October 14, 2018.)

seeking to disenfranchise more than 50,000 voters
