アメリカの大手小売業のSearsがいよいよ破産申請しそうだというニュース記事から引用します。


It appears that the end is nigh for embattled retailer Sears.

On Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the company has hired advisors to help it prepare for a possible bankruptcy filing as early as this week.

大分前、もう10年以上前ですが、アメリカに短期滞在した折、Searsの店舗をよく見かけました。

雰囲気的にはダイエーとかイトーヨーカ堂みたいな感じだったのですが、スーパーマーケットというよりは、値ごろ感のある服飾や、キッチン用品とか日用品などの雑貨などの品揃えがあるチェーン店であるというイメージを持っています。

元々はカタログショッピングで市場を席巻し、当時は今日で言うところのアマゾンくらいのインパクトと勢いがあったようですが、その後は市場の変化に対応できず、見る影もない凋落ぶりが記事に写真と共に紹介されています。

さて、引用した部分の冒頭に、

とありますが、"nigh"という単語はあまり馴染みがないのではないかと思います。

発音すると「ナイ」となりますが、意味は「無い」ではなく、「ある」、という冗談みたいな単語です。

手元のランダムハウス英和を引いてみると、古語とか詩語という分類になっており、あまりお目にかからないのもそのためかもしれません。

意味的には、"near"とか"almost"に近く、差し迫っている、という訳語などが適当に思われます。
