「はじめの一歩」が肝心 ー get off on the right foot

Amazon is ramping up its New York charm offensive.

In an open letter on Saturday, the online retail behemoth ticked off a slew of benefits it promises to bring to Long Island City, where it has stirred controversy since it selected the Queens neighborhood in November as a site for its new HQ2 corporate headquarters.

“Happy New Year from your future neighbors at Amazon,” the web giant began in the letter to New Yorkers, which was published Saturday in The Post and other news outlets.

Amid alarming reports about potentially strained sewage systems in the neighborhood by the influx of 25,000 new employees as well as critics who are upset about Amazon’s employment polices, tax incentives and just about everything Amazon stands for, the company is determined to get off on the right foot.

the company is determined to get off on the right foot

とありますがこの”get off on the right foot”が今日取り上げる表現です。

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms

If you start doing something and you get off on the wrong foot, you start badly or in an unfortunate way. Compare caught on the wrong foot and start off on the right foot.

on one’s last legs

Are leggings on their last legs?

Not exactly, but they might be past their prime.

The runaway athleisure train — including fashion and sports sneakers, leggings and tights — that gripped the apparel industry over the past four years is slowing down as consumers show a growing preference for jeans and boots.

“The athleisure business is losing some steam and finally something else is replacing that growth,” said Marshal Cohen, chief industry adviser at the NPD Group, which tracks retail sales data.
(Lisa Fickenscher. Athleisure is losing stamina in the fashion world. New York Post. January 1, 2019.)

on their last legs

If you say that something or someone is on their last legs, you mean that they are no longer as useful, successful, or strong as they were and are about to fail altogether.

plugged-in

Apple never launched AirPower, a product it said would arrive in 2018.

If you're not familiar, Apple announced a product at its September 2017 iPhone event called "AirPower" that was supposed to let iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods owners wirelessly charge all three devices at the same time. Apple said it would launch in 2018, but it never did.

It's a rare miss for Apple, which typically has a good track record of following through on product announcements.

Mysteriously, Apple began pulling all mention of AirPower from its website after the September 2018 iPhone event. Around that time, plugged-in Apple writer John Gruber, suggested that AirPower was facing overheating problems and may have been "scrubbed." That means AirPower was getting too hot while trying to charge three devices at the same time.
(Todd Haselton. Apple ended 2018 with a rare product launch miss. CNBC. January 1, 2019.)

plugged-in Apple writer

technologically or socially informed and connected

p
To cause (someone) to use a computer network, the internet, or an electronic device.

To become informed about or involved with

A bicyclist was killed in Brooklyn early New Year’s Day after an opening taxi door hurled him into the path of another passing car, cops said.

Hugo Alexander Sinto Garcia, 26, was riding a pedal-assist e-bike north on Third Avenue near 28th Street in Greenwood Heights around 6:15 a.m. when a parked 2009 Toyota cab swung open its door in his path, police said.

The cyclist — who lives just over a block from where he was killed — was catapulted over the door into the path of oncoming traffic, where a 2013 Nissan driven by a 53-year-old man rammed into him, cops said.
(Amanda Woods. Cyclist killed after being ‘doored’ by cab in Brooklyn. New York Post. January 1, 2019.)

being ’doored’ by cab

To strike (a passing bicyclist, for example) by suddenly opening a vehicular door
(American Heritage Dictionary)

boar

Boars have an inherently bad reputation.

Popular culture such as the 1995 comedy “Babe,” a film about a lovable farmyard pig that is raised as a sheepdog, may have helped to change this perception in recent times, but the negativity surrounding the animal is even embedded in our language. Most pig-related idioms reinforce an image of the animal being dirty, gluttonous or generally unpleasant.

According to astrologists, however, pigs have plenty of good traits that will serve us well in 2019 — the Year of the Boar according to the Chinese calendar.

Intelligent and determined, pigs devote their energy to foraging once their sensitive snouts pick up a scent. They are also fond of relaxation and comfort, hence the existence of sayings such as “to be on the pig’s back” (in a position of luxury or ease) and “happy as a pig in muck” (to be joyful or content).
(Kathryn Wortley. New year, new opportunities: What to expect in the Year of the Boar. December 29, 2018.)
