Are leggings on their last legs?

Not exactly, but they might be past their prime.

The runaway athleisure train — including fashion and sports sneakers, leggings and tights — that gripped the apparel industry over the past four years is slowing down as consumers show a growing preference for jeans and boots.

ファッションの話題です。

個人的にはファッションには疎く、今日着ているセーターも17年前（！）に買ったもので、所々がほつれているような次第です（苦笑）

話題になっているのは「レギンス」です。私的には「モモヒキ」のように見えるのですが。

さて、そのレギンスが、


on their last legs


ということなんですが、これは成句で、


死にかけて、つぶれかけて、こわれかけて
（研究社大英和辞典）


という意味です。Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsにエントリがありました。


If you say that something or someone is on their last legs, you mean that they are no longer as useful, successful, or strong as they were and are about to fail altogether.


つまり、レギンスは流行の盛りを過ぎてしまった、ということなんですね。女性のファッションとしては、レギンスよりもジーンズにブーツ、というのがニューヨークの最新のようです。

ところで、レギンス（leggings）にかけて、”last legs”とはシャレですね。
