These baseball fans are real phonies.
Bizarre images show cardboard cutouts, mannequins and drum-playing robots filling the stands at Taiwan’s Taoyuan Baseball Stadium instead of real fans when the Chinese Professional Baseball League restarted its season Sunday after a month-long coronavirus lockout.
The faux-fans were dolled up in real hats and shirts of the home team the Rakuten Monkeys, some pointing toward the field and others holding signs over their heads — via zip ties around their plastic wrists.
The stunt was a concession to COVID-19 social-distancing requirements that remain in place, even with play resuming.
“We are the first pro-baseball league to start playing in the world” during the coronavirus pandemic, the league said in a statement, according to AFP.
(Jorge Fitz-Gibbon. Baseball league restarts in Taiwan with robot and mannequin ‘fans’ in seats. New York Post. April 13, 2020.)
faux-fans

anosmia
anosmia
Bourne has not had the widely recognized coronavirus symptoms -- a cough or high fever -- and therefore is not eligible to be tested by the UK's National Health Service (NHS). But her experience of suddenly losing her sense of smell, combined with "weird head rushes," headaches and exhaustion led her doctor to diagnose her "straight off the bat" with Covid-19 over the phone.
While there have yet to be robust studies on the link between coronavirus and smell, doctors have reported anecdotally that losing the ability to smell may be among the virus's symptoms -- but how widespread that is, and how long it might last, is unclear.
"I feel lucky I don't have the really scary symptoms," the 33-year-old author says. However, she describes her loss of the sense of smell, or anosmia, as "one of the most upsetting things I've ever gone through because you're not in the driving seat.... I just feel really powerless and scared."
(Sarah Dean. Sense of smell was lost by some people weeks ago. They're still waiting for it to come back. CNN. April 13, 2020.)
The thing many people experiencing new-onset anosmia or hyposmia -- a partial smell loss -- during the coronavirus pandemic want to know is how long is it going to last? Will it be permanent?
(ibid.)

three cheers
Three cheers for Big Pharma as it rushes to develop a vaccine
Doctors warn us that we can’t feel truly safe against the novel coronavirus until an effective vaccine is developed. Fortunately, there’s good news on that front. Both in the United States and elsewhere, many vaccines are already either being tested on humans or will be soon.
Two clinical trials are in process in the United States. One underway in Seattle uses two doses injected into the bloodstream while a second, being performed in Kansas City and Philadelphia, merely pricks the skin and is followed by a small electric shock to help the chemicals penetrate deeper into the body. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine are applying to the Food and Drug Administration to put a third potential vaccine into clinical trials soon.
(Henry Olsen. Three cheers for Big Pharma as it rushes to develop a vaccine. The Washington Post. April 9, 2020.)
Three cheers for Big Pharma as it rushes to develop a vaccine
hip, hip, hooray(もしくは、hurrah)

infodemic
Many people spreading these fraudulent posts have good intentions. Everyone’s trying to keep up with an ever-shifting situation. (Remember last week? That feels like years ago.) And they want to help each other. But the current regularity of forwarded falsehoods is revealing: Any absence of good information leaves room for a lot of terrible information.
The World Health Organization recently described this moment as an “infodemic.” We’re getting virus news through a fire hose—push notifications, TV, social media, hearsay through our networks. There’s misleading or inaccurate information at every turn, despite companies’ efforts to remove it. And as social networks crack down on misinformation, it’s growing in grass-roots channels, like text and email.
Many people, confused by all the noise, are still searching for answers. So, how do we wade through the onslaught? I called some experts for help.
(Nicole Nguyen. In the Coronavirus ‘Infodemic,’ Here’s How to Avoid Bad Information. Wall Street Journal. March 22, 2020.)

canoodle
The coronavirus lockdown is just what the love doctor ordered for a pair of pandas in China.
The randy twosome — Ying Ying and Le Le — were caught on camera canoodling Monday in Ocean Park, a Hong Kong zoo where visitors — and their prying eyes — are now barred because of the bug, reports said.
(Rosemary Misdary. Pandas finally mate in Hong Kong zoo shuttered over coronavirus. New York Post. April 7, 2020.)
canoodl(ing)
The origins of canoodle are obscure. Our best guess is that it may come from an English dialect noun of the same spelling meaning "donkey," "fool," or "foolish lover," which itself may be an alteration of the word noodle, meaning "a foolish person." That noodle, in turn, may come from noddle, a word for the head. The guess seems reasonable given that, since its appearance in the language around the mid-19th century, canoodle has been most often used jocularly for playful public displays of affection by couples who are head over heels in love.
