高度情報化社会、という表現は陳腐化したようにも思いますがクレジットカードの使用履歴から個人が特定可能、と言われると情報化社会というのを実感します。

最近の研究によれば、クレジットカードの使用履歴4件足らずで個人を特定することができるそうです。


Just four bits of information gleaned from a shopper's credit card can be used to identify almost anyone, researchers have found.

The study in the journal Science analysed three months of credit card records for 1.1m people in an unidentified industrialised country.

Ninety percent of individuals could be uniquely identified using just four pieces of information, such as where they bought coffee one day or where they purchased a new jumper or pair of shoes.

女性の方が男性よりも特定が容易なのだそうです。また、高所得者もより特定しやすいというくだりがあり、以下に引用します。


"Women are more re-identifiable than men in credit card metadata," it added.

People with higher incomes were also easier to identify, perhaps because they "have distinctive patterns in how they divide their time between the shops they visit," added the study.

ここで、


divide their time


という表現に目が留まりました。私にとって、ちょっと見慣れない表現でした。高所得者が特定されやすい理由として、


patterns in how they divide their time between the shops they visit


とあります。この"divide their time"をどう訳したものでしょうか。

敢えて言うまでもなく、"divide"には分ける、分割する、という意味がありますので上記で言わんとするところも分からないこともないのですが、クレジットカードの使用履歴というコンテクストから解釈しようとするとよく分かりません。時間を分割する、というのがどうもしっくりきません。

ランダムハウス英和で"divide"を引いてみましたが、それらしき説明を見つけることができません。恐らく、"divide one's time"は慣用句的な表現であろうと考え、コーパスで調べてみるとやはり多くの用例を確認することができました。枚挙に暇がありませんが、

...divided his time among Toronto, Paris, Cairo and Dubai...
...dividing his time between homes in London and New York...


などといった用例を見ると、少しずつ納得感が出てきました。そしてこのフレーズは、

というパターンで、"among"、あるいは"between"以下には場所、地名、職業などが来ることが多いということも分かりました。

つまり、日本語で言うと、場所に関して言えば“往復する”、という意味になるかと思います。職業に関していえば、“掛け持ち”といったところでしょうか。

英語では時間（time）という概念が出ているものの、日本語では空間の概念が出ていると言えます。"divide"という動詞から“往復”という日本語はなかなか出てこないのではないでしょうか。

カード使用履歴の話に戻ると、高所得者が特定されやすいのは、お店の訪問のパターンが（低所得者や普通の人と比較して）際立って異なっている、ということがある、ということでしょう。

何と訳す？ ― unboil

卵を茹でる、と言います。ではその逆（？）は何と言ったらいいのでしょうか？

ばかげた質問とおっしゃる方々、何とゆで卵を生卵に戻す方法があるそうです。

サイエンスに疎い私は詳細のメカニズムはよく分からないのでうまく説明することができません。卵を茹でることによって、タンパク質が結合し、白身から固まっていくわけですが、この結合を元の状態に戻す（？）方法が開発されたということです。

さて、この"unboil"をどう訳したらよいのでしょうか？

英語の接頭辞un- は色々な動詞について、戻す、離す、外す、などの意味を付加します。"boil"にun- が付加された"unboil"も、“戻す”の意味なのでしょうが、動詞の"boil"は（ゆで卵にするための）手段を指しているのであって、結果ではないので“戻す”というのがしっくりとこないのではないかと思います。

接頭辞un- が付加される色々な動詞を見ればこれが明らかだと思います。


lock に対して、 unlock
plug に対して、 unplug
load に対して、 unload


など、結果にフォーカスを置いたものと比較すると、"boil"-"unboil"の組み合わせは異色とも言えるのではないでしょうか。

アメリカ北東部で大雪 ― snowpocalypse

アメリカの北東部、ニューヨークなどが大雪に見舞われています。ニューヨーク州知事は夜11時以降の外出を禁止したとか。もし車で出かけているところを見つかりでもしたら罪に問われ、罰金だそうです。生死の問題ということで、大雪への備えが呼びかけられています。

ところで、"snowpocalypse"という表現があるのをご存知でしょうか？

"snow-pocalypse"とハイフネーションの入った単語となっていますが、お分かりのように、"snow"と"apocalypse"の合成語（かばん語）となっています。

"apocalypse"は以前にも取り上げたことがありますが、大惨事などを指して使われます。

記事のタイトルでは、


snowmaggedon


なる単語も使われていますが、これも、"snow"と"Armageddon"（ハルマゲドン）のかばん語です。

大雪という自然現象に対する畏敬をArmageddon、ないしApocalypseと表現している訳ですが、当のニューヨーカーは乱痴気騒ぎにうつつを抜かしているようです。

台風が近づくと学校が休校になったりして妙にわくわくする小中学生と同じ心理でしょうか。

相殺 ― cancel out

オフィスワーカーはともすると1日中座りっぱなしで仕事で体に良くない、といわれます。でも、定期的に運動してれば大丈夫と思っている人は多いでしょう。私もそう思っていました。

ところが、日常的に運動しているか否かに関係なく、座りっぱなしの時間が多いというのは体に良くないそうです。


People who are too sedentary, even if they do exercise frequently, are more likely to develop heart disease, cancer and diabetes, a new report says.

It's well known that too much sitting time is bad for our health. “What we didn't know was whether the sitting time and health relationship was because people were also exercising poorly,” said senior author Dr. David Alter of the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute-University Health Network and Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences.

It turns out, he and his colleagues say, that sedentary time and exercise time are two distinct factors when it comes to health outcomes.

仕事で座りっぱなしの人が仕事以外の時間での運動時間が少ないという傾向はその通りらしいのですが、運動をしているからといって、座りっぱなしの時間が"cancel out"される、というものでもなく、座りっぱなしというのはそれはそれで健康に良くないのだそうです。

"cancel out"とは、“相殺する”という意味です。

座りっぱなしで普段から運動をあまりしないという人が一番健康的に良くない、というのは変わりませんのでお間違いなく。

こんな意味もあったの？ ― function

"function"という単語を聞いて真っ先に思い浮かべる日本語は何でしょうか？

関数？

機能？

どちらも正しいですが、行事という意味がありました。


Family events are notorious for seeing us regress into the early eating habits of our youth. We will search for snacks we enjoyed as children even though we never eat them now, binge-eat foods with parents and siblings and forget the food rules we have worked so hard to commit to in adulthood. For unique, special occasions this poses no major issue but if you find yourself at family functions weekly, you may need to work towards not regressing into the eating patterns of your youth. Remember your food rules and seek out plenty of vegetables and salad and enjoy a single dessert, not multiple serves simply because grandma made them.

辞書を引いて初めて、"function"に、

の意味があると知り、不勉強を恥じました。
