イギリスのハリー王子と結婚した米国人女優のメーガン・マークルさんについてはその結婚式がずいぶん話題になり、日本でも大きく報道されました。

その後日本では動静はほとんど聞きませんが、本国ではそっとしておいてもらえるということはさすがにないようです。

エリザベス女王臨席のイベントで、マークルさんが脚を組んで座ったことが取り沙汰されています。


Meghan Markle has handled her whirlwind first month as a royal like a professional, even when things haven't gone according to plan. Tuesday evening was no different, as the Duchess of Sussex joined Prince Harry and the queen at Buckingham Palace for an event honoring the Queen's Young Leaders program.

In a video captured by Simon Perry, the chief foreign correspondent for People magazine, Markle can be seen taking her seat at the start of the awards ceremony, momentarily crossing one leg on top of the other.

記事の写真を見ますと、確かにその長い脚を組んで正面を向いて微笑んでいます。

英王室入りしたとは言え、元は一般人なのだから・・・、という見方もありますが、王室とか皇室の人は大変だなあと思わされますね。

ところで記事によると、脚を組んではいけないというルール（エチケット）が明文化されている訳でもないそうですが、フォーマルには膝とくるぶしをちゃんと閉じて座るのがやはり正しいようです。


While there is no official protocol that dictates how royal women must sit near the queen, Myka Meier, the founder of Beaumont Etiquette who's an expert on royal etiquette, told INSIDER that "the most formal way for a lady to sit is with her knees and ankles together at all times."

そして、推奨される座り方の1つは、"duchess slant"と呼ばれるそうです。


The first is called the "duchess slant," a term she coined in 2013. In this pose, a woman's legs and ankles are pressed together and angled to one side, "creating a zigzag position to protect modesty."

"slant"というのは斜めになっている状態を意味します。つまり、脚を組まずにちゃんと閉じた状態で、揃えた両足を左右どちらかに寝かせる感じ、ですね。

さらに、もう1つは"Cambridge cross"と呼ばれる作法（！？）で、


Another common pose royal women use when sitting is something Meier calls the "Cambridge cross." In this pose, a woman's legs are pressed together and crossed only at the ankles, with her heels touching the floor.

これは、両膝はちゃんと閉じた状態であることは同じですが、足元、つまりくるぶしのところでは足を組んでいるような格好です。
