the Resolute desk

歴史的な米朝会談は実現が一時頓挫しかけましたが、今月12日に再設定されました。

金委員長とトランプ大統領の初顔合わせがいよいよ実現する見込みです。

その一方で、もう一つの"Kim summit"と揶揄される会合がありました。

もう一人のKim氏については、私はこのKim Kardasianという人についてよく知らないのでどうでもいいのですが、言ってみれば、日本だと、安倍総理大臣が芸能人を執務室に招き入れて懇談したというくらいの話になりましょうか。

さて、事の軽重の話が記事の話題ではありますが、おやと思ったのは、


the Resolute desk


という単語が出てくる部分です。

記事に写真が掲載されていますが、執務室のデスクの上で手を合わせて座る大統領の横にKim氏が立っている写真です。

この大統領執務室の机を"the Resolute desk"と呼ぶというのを初めて知りました。

調べてみると、名前の由来は英国の探査船HMS Resolute号に因むそうです。

HMS Resolute号は、行方不明になっていた別の船の捜索のため北極海に向かっていたところ、氷山のため動けなくなったそうなのですが、その後アメリカの捕鯨船が発見して、英国に返還しました。

当時のヴィクトリア女王は船を分解した材料から作った"desk"をヘイズ第19代大統領に贈ったことから、この机が"the Resolute desk"と呼ばれるようになったそうです。
