米朝首脳会談がいよいよ明日に迫りました。

内容としては概ね、北朝鮮が体制の維持をどのように図ろうとしているかを1970年代の中国と比較して考察しているものです。

さて、引用した部分では、ピョンヤンを指して、


the sanctum sanctorum of the Workers' Party of Korea


と表現しています。

この"sanctum sanctorum"とはラテン語のフレーズですが、英訳すると、


holy of holies


となります。

ラテン語で、"sanctus"は神聖な、という意味の形容詞ですが、その中性形sanctumで名詞として用いられています。

一方、2つ目の"sanctorum"は同じくsanctusの複数・属格形です。（属格は、～のうちで、という意味合いがあります。）

辞書を引くと、この表現は旧約聖書でエルサレム神殿等の中でも最も聖なる場所を指したものだそうですが、現代では一般的に神聖な場所という意味で用いられるようになったようです。
