"certain death"、すなわち「確実な死」ということになります。抵抗すれば命は無い、という最大級の脅しではないでしょうか。
"certain"という形容詞には、確実な、という意味の他、いくつかの意味がありますが、ここでは避けることができない、必然の、という意味合いが相当すると思われます。
この"certain death"という言い回しは英語では一般に定着しているもののようで、用例には枚挙にいとまがありませんが、いくつかコーパスで拾ってみました。
