ハメネイ師殺害後、短波放送で報復テロを指示すると思われる不審なメッセージを米軍は傍受したようです。外国に潜伏する"sleeper cell"と呼ばれるスパイを動員し、無差別テロを実行する危険性が指摘されています。

"sleeper cell"という表現は、昨年6月にイラン国内の各施設を米軍が攻撃したとのニュース記事でも使われていました。本日の引用記事においても、記事タイトルには"sleeper cell"とありますが、本文中では、

sleeper assets

と出て来ます。

"assets"にもスパイの意味があるそうで、何故か研究社新英和大辞典には載っていなかったのですが、American Heritage Dictionaryには、

A spy working in their own country and controlled by a foreign power or an enemy.

と定義されています。

"asset"という名詞は資産、財産、また長所、利点、強みといった意味ですが、スパイの意味で用いられるとは知りませんでした。Oxford Dictionary of Euphemismsにも載っており、「役に立つもの」ということで"asset"なんだそうです。

ところで、"asset"という単語の成り立ちについてですが、元は"assets"というスペルであり、このスペルの語尾のsを複数形の-sと誤解したために"asset"というスペルになったという背景だそうです。（いわゆる逆成。）

更に遡るとラテン語ad satisに由来し、これは充分な（に）、満足のいく程度に（in sufficiency）という意味で、借入金、負債に対する（充分な）返済能力（すなわち資産）を指すことからだそうです。
