March 7 (Reuters) - Kuwait Petroleum Corporation began cutting oil output on Saturday and declared force majeure, adding to earlier oil and gas reductions from Iraq and Qatar as the U.S.-Iran war blocked shipments from the Middle East ​for the eighth consecutive day.

The war has blocked the world's most important oil ​artery the Strait of Hormuz which is responsible for 20% of ⁠global oil and LNG supply. Analysts predict the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia will ​have to also cut output soon as they run out of oil storage.

"force majeure"とは聞き慣れない用語かと思います。字面からフランス語であると分かりますが、契約書などで使われる用語で、不可抗力（条項）と訳されます。

今般のイラン情勢に関連して"force majeure"を解説した記事から引用します。

"force majeure"、すなわち今回のように紛争の勃発や自然災害など、想定外の事態により契約義務を履行出来なくなった状況を指します。契約書において、そのような場合に義務を免除する条項を"force majeure"（不可抗力条項）と呼びます。

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、別名"vis major"というとあります。（visはラテン語で力を意味する名詞です。）
