Have a great day.

スムージーを買い求めた客への商品提供を拒否した店の対応を巡って是非が分かれています。その理由というのが、客がトランプ大統領支持だから、というものです。その客はトランプ氏の名前が書かれた服を着ていたようです。

海外では人種や身なりからサービス提供を拒否するということがあったりします。小生も経験があります。政治信条を理由にサービスを拒否するというのは現代のアメリカ国内の政治的分断を如実に示すものでしょう。

Erika Lindemyer and her husband, Jake, were forced out of a Smoothie King franchise location in Ann Arbor, Michigan, following a fiery clash with two young female workers on Sunday.

“We were just wanting a smoothie and you literally looked at us and I asked you if everything was OK and you said ‘We don’t feel comfortable serving you’ because of my husband’s hoodie. That is discrimination,” Erika spat.

“Okay, well, have a great day,” the first employee said.

店舗スタッフはトランプ支持者にサービスしたくないと言ったそうですが、客はそんな理由はおかしいと食い下がり、しばらく押し問答が続いたようです。最終的に、店舗スタッフは、

Okay, well, have a great day

と言ったとありますが、"Havea great day"は和訳すれば、「素晴らしい一日を」との挨拶のはずですが、ここでは文字通りには解釈出来ないものがありそうです。

実際、もう一人の店舗スタッフは、

“You asked a question and [the other employee] gave you an answer. Have a great day. Have a great day. The door’s right there,” the second worker said.

と発言、"Havea great day"を二度も繰り返した上、ドア（出口）はそこですよ、と退店を促したとあります。

こうなると、"Havea great day"は相手に良き一日を願う挨拶ではなく、その逆の皮肉を込めた捨て台詞とでもいうものではないかと感じられるはずです。

"Have a nice day"というのも同じような言い回しですが、ウィキペディアには以下のような説明が見られます。

According to some journalists and scholars, its repetitious and dutiful usage has resulted in the phrase developing secondary cultural connotations of, variously, impersonality, lack of interest, passive–aggressive behavior, sarcasm or as a definitive way to put an end to a conversation and dismiss the other party.

つまり、"Havea great day"（Have a nice day）というセリフはコンテクスト次第では、相手とのやり取りを断ち切る意図を滲ませた、とても嫌味で、失礼な表現になるということなのです。

これを読んで、小生は何年か前に仕事上のメールで相手からの返信にこの"Havea great day"が締め括りに書かれていたことを思い出しました。

そのメールのやり取りは小生からのクレームだったのですが、受け取った相手は取り敢えず文句があるのは分かったから今度から気をつける、といった内容に続き"Havea great day"で締め括られていました。

きっとクレームの内容に少し機嫌を悪くし、もうこれ以上のやり取りはしたく無い、という思いを滲ませたものだったのだろうと、今更ながらに思います。
