サウスダコタ州知事Kristi Noem氏が自著で飼い犬を殺したと告白していることが波紋を呼んでいます。

5月7日発刊予定の回顧記でNoem氏は農場で飼っていたポインターの仔犬が攻撃的で、家畜にも噛み付くなどしたという理由で射殺したと書いているということです。

犬を愛する人にとっては衝撃の内容がガーディアン紙に報じられると、SNSなどを中心にNoem氏を批判する投稿が相次ぎました。

同氏は危害を及ぼす犬を処分することは州法に照らして合法と自身の行為を擁護しているそうです。

さて、衝撃の告白は州知事という職にある人物のスキャンダルとして十分ではありますが、この件がトップニュースに取り上げられるのは、Noem氏がトランプ氏の同志であり、今年の大統領選でトランプ氏が当選したあかつきには副大統領候補とも目されていることにあります。

「もしトラ」のシナリオに多くの共和党議員が副大統領のポストを狙っているのでしょう。

引用した記事は、今回の件は民主党勢力のみならず、Noem氏に敵対する勢力にも格好の攻撃材料になっていると分析するものです。

ある共和党議員の発言が引用されており、

ここで"oppo"という単語が引っ掛かりました。

恐らく"opposition"のことだとは想像がつきますのでやり過ごそうと思いましたが、念の為調べてみることに。

"oppo"というのは、

opposition research

を指すのだそうですが、これは政治用語で、敵対する陣営の政治家などに関わるスキャンダルなどのネタを調査することを言うのだそうです。

なお、Merriam-Webster Dictionary（オンライン）には"oppo"のエントリがあって、

damaging information about a political candidate that is gathered and used or made public usually by an opponent's camp

と定義されています。

MAGAのアライでもあるNoem氏に対し、トランプ氏がどういう発言するのか、注目されます。
