Much has been said about millennials and their wants and needs in the housing market, but Generation Z (ages 18-24) appears to already be planning for homeownership more than other generations. A realtor.com survey found this upcoming generation is twice more likely than previous generations to be saving or plan to save for a home by age 25. In fact, two of five aim to become homeowners by that age.
The online listing website of the National Association of Realtors surveyed 3,372 Americans across Generation X (ages 35-50), millennials/Generation Y (ages 25-34) and Generation Zers to better understand the generational differences in relation to homeownership and aspirations.
(Rose Meily. Real deal: Gen Z saving early, aspires for homeownership by age 25. Mercury News. November 30, 2018.)
A member of the generation born from the early 1980s to late 1990s, especially in the United States and Canada; a member of Generation Y.
(American Heritage Dictionary, 5th edition.)
Generation Z is about to change the face of the workforce.
The older members of this substantial group — more than 61 million individuals in the U.S. alone, often defined as the generation born between 1996 and 2010 — are now breaking into the labor force and should make up one-fifth of it by 2021.
(William Arruda. How To Make Your Workplace Ready For Gen Z. Forbes. November 13, 2018.)
Raised in the era of technology and economic upheaval, Generation Z – born in 1995 and onward – are marked by their work ethic, practical approach to education, and embrace of technology.
(Jason Wingard. Training Generation Z. Forbes. November 21, 2018.)

gaslighting
Shortlisted for the Oxford English Dictionary’s 2018 word of the year, “gaslighting” has well and truly found its way into contemporary thought and vernacular.
The term has recently been employed to explain the behaviour of contestants on The Bachelor Australia, Monica Lewinksy’s experiences with the media post-Bill Clinton, and the words of US President Donald Trump.
But what, exactly, does it mean? Where did it come from? And why is it experiencing a resurgence today?
(Explainer: what does ‘gaslighting’ mean? The Conversation. December 6, 2018.)
Although it can cover various behaviours, the central tenet of gaslighting is the psychological manipulation of a person in order to erode their sense of self and sanity.
The behaviour itself is not always deliberate, in that the perpetrator may not have consciously set out to distort another person’s experience of reality. But gaslighting is often used as a method of power and control.
(ibid.)

Oxfordによる2018年のWord of the Yearは、
toxic
It’s official: 2018 is toxic.
Well, lexicographically speaking, at least. Oxford Dictionaries has chosen “toxic” as its international word of the year, selecting it from a shortlist that included such politically inflected contenders as “gaslighting,” “incel” and “techlash.”
Katherine Connor Martin, the company’s head of U.S. dictionaries, said there had been a marked uptick of interest in the word on its website over the past year. But the word was chosen less for statistical reasons, she said, than for the sheer variety of contexts in which it has proliferated, from conversations about environmental poisons to laments about today’s poisonous political discourse to the #MeToo movement, with its calling out of “toxic masculinity.”
(Jennifer Schuessler. ‘Toxic’ Is Oxford’s Word of the Year. No, We’re Not Gaslighting You. New York Times. November 14, 2018.)
“Toxic” derives from the Greek “toxikon pharmakon,” meaning “poison for arrows.” (The part of the phrase meaning arrows, rather than poison, became the basis for the word.) The current entry in the online Oxford English Dictionary dates its earliest known printed occurrence to 1664, in a book about forests.
(ibid.)

pallbearer
A military guard carried George H.W. Bush’s coffin into the U.S. Capitol on Monday as the sun set in Washington, beginning several days of ceremonies and tributes to the 41st president.
Arriving from Houston in Special Air Mission 41, a presidential aircraft that was temporarily renamed to honor the 41st president, Bush’s coffin was greeted at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland by “Hail to the Chief” and a 21-gun salute. Two of the late president’s sons, George W. and Neil, flew on the presidential jet from Houston. His other children, Jeb, Marvin and Dorothy, met the plan when it landed.
With an American flag draped over it, the coffin departed Houston at noon Eastern Time. Members of the late president’s Secret Service Bush Protective Division served as honorary pallbearers in Texas.
(Rebecca Morin. George H.W. Bush makes final landing in Washington. Politico. December 3, 2018.)
Pallbearer

yardstick
‘Honorable, gracious and decent’: In death, Bush becomes a yardstick for President Trump
The tributes to former president George H.W. Bush poured in this weekend, each in their own way exposing the pitfalls ahead this week for the Oval Office’s current resident.
The 41st president was remembered by Barack Obama, the 44th, as “a humble servant.” “Honorable, gracious and decent” were the words Bill Clinton used in praise of his immediate predecessor. House Speaker Paul D. Ryan’s encomium described Bush as “great in his character, leading with decency and integrity.”
In death, presidents are measured not only by their accomplishments but by what their tenure says about sitting presidents — and in this case, the contrast appears stark.
(Gregg Jaffe. ‘Honorable, gracious and decent’: In death, Bush becomes a yardstick for President Trump. The Washington Post. December 2, 2018.)
