先週金曜日に94歳で亡くなった第41代大統領のGeorge H.W. Bush氏の亡骸がテキサス州ヒューストンの自宅から、公開安置されるワシントンDCのCapitol Hillへと特別機で運ばれました。


A military guard carried George H.W. Bush’s coffin into the U.S. Capitol on Monday as the sun set in Washington, beginning several days of ceremonies and tributes to the 41st president.

Arriving from Houston in Special Air Mission 41, a presidential aircraft that was temporarily renamed to honor the 41st president, Bush’s coffin was greeted at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland by “Hail to the Chief” and a 21-gun salute. Two of the late president’s sons, George W. and Neil, flew on the presidential jet from Houston. His other children, Jeb, Marvin and Dorothy, met the plan when it landed.

With an American flag draped over it, the coffin departed Houston at noon Eastern Time. Members of the late president’s Secret Service Bush Protective Division served as honorary pallbearers in Texas.

写真入りの記事では、アメリカ国旗で覆われた棺が、多くの人達に見守られながらワシントンの議会場の階段を運ばれていく様子が窺えます。

棺を運ぶというのは故人に親しかった人に任されることが多いですが、故ブッシュ氏の警護を担当したシークレットサービスのメンバーが今回は担ったようです。

“Pall”というのは元々は棺を覆う布のことを指していたようです。ラテン語で袖なしの外套を意味するpalliumに由来するそうです。
