分かりにくい「世代」 ― Generation Z

以前、"millennial"という単語を取り上げましたが、最近"Generation Z"という表現を目にしました。

"millennial"については、別名"Generation Y"とも呼ばれるということで、"Generation Z"についても、「Y世代」に次ぐ世代のことだろうくらいは想像がつきましたが、いざ頭の中で整理して解釈しようとすると、これが実はよく分からないのです。


Much has been said about millennials and their wants and needs in the housing market, but Generation Z (ages 18-24) appears to already be planning for homeownership more than other generations. A realtor.com survey found this upcoming generation is twice more likely than previous generations to be saving or plan to save for a home by age 25. In fact, two of five aim to become homeowners by that age.

The online listing website of the National Association of Realtors surveyed 3,372 Americans across Generation X (ages 35-50), millennials/Generation Y (ages 25-34) and Generation Zers to better understand the generational differences in relation to homeownership and aspirations.

上記の引用では、


Generation Xは、年齢にして35～50歳（つまり生まれは、1968年～1983年）
Generation Yは、年齢にして25～34歳（つまり生まれは、1984年～1993年）
Generation Zは、年齢にして18～24歳（つまり生まれは、1994年～2000年）


ということになります。

一方、"millennial"は、


A member of the generation born from the early 1980s to late 1990s, especially in the United States and Canada; a member of Generation Y.
(American Heritage Dictionary, 5th edition.)


と定義されており、1980年台前半から1990年台後半に生まれた世代ということで、上記のY世代とZ世代にかぶります。すなわち、"millennial"イコール"Generation Y"とはならないのです。

また、Z世代の定義についても、（同じForbes紙でありながら）揺れが見られます。

The older members of this substantial group — more than 61 million individuals in the U.S. alone, often defined as the generation born between 1996 and 2010 — are now breaking into the labor force and should make up one-fifth of it by 2021.

上記の引用では、1996年〜2010年生まれの世代とされています。一方、下記では、


Raised in the era of technology and economic upheaval, Generation Z – born in 1995 and onward – are marked by their work ethic, practical approach to education, and embrace of technology.

1995年以降に生まれた世代です。

Z世代の定義に1〜2年の揺れがあるのはまあ良いとして、"millennial"（Y世代）について辞書（American Heritage Dictionary）の定義が、今日の"Generation Z"と矛盾することが問題かと思われました。
