"covidiot" - 2020年の新語大賞になるかも！？
Fighting a pandemic is hard enough without baffling demonstrations of ignorance also going viral, leaving us to wonder if humanity stands a chance.
For every hero who’s saved a life during this outbreak, there seems to be an idiot who put us all in danger. So far, the confederacy of idiots spans everyone from spring breakers to millionaire showbiz personalities. Those people are COVIDIOTS.

上記の引用では、All Capital（全大文字）ですが、記事によっては"Covidiot"だったり、"covidiot"だったりします。
感のいい方は直ぐにお気づきでしょうが、新型コロナウィルスによる感染症の名称である"COVID-19"と"idiot"（馬鹿）を掛け合わせた、かばん語です。
定義ですが、
Urban Dictionary's most popular, recent definition of "covidiot" defines the offender as "someone who ignores the warnings regarding public health or safety" during the worldwide coronavirus outbreak.

ということで、全世界で感染が拡がっているにも関わらず、抑止に反するような行動を取る人たちを当てこすった表現です。

感染拡大を食い止めるために、個々人の意識や行動が益々重視されています。
"covidiot"などと呼ばれたくはありませんが、しばらくは息苦しい生活が続きそうです。

silver lining
連日に渡り新型コロナウィルス関連のニュース記事ばかりで、グーグルニュースにしても、ツイッターのタイムラインにしても、他の話題は無いのかと、少々疲れて参りました。
そんな中、気分が少しは和らぐような記事です。
With stay-at-home orders throughout the nation and nonessential businesses being shut down during the coronavirus pandemic, most aquariums throughout the United States have also been closed.
But there is one silver lining to this: Zoos and aquariums being closed to human guests means that animals can be visited by other animals, whether they come from inside the zoo or from an animal shelter.
Nationwide, animals are meeting different types of animals — and sometimes it's for the first time, given their priceless reactions.

昨日だったか、上野動物園ではパンダが観客のいない静かな園内を満喫しているという記事を読みましたが、動物園や水族館の住人達にとっては、それもまた一興（！？）かもしれません。
全米各地の動物園や水族館では人間の観客がいない中、普段は相まみえることのない動物同士の交流が図られ、普段見られない光景が繰り広げられているそうです。
ということで、

ということわざの登場です。
高校生の英語の教科書で出てくるのではないかと思いますが、どんな雲にも裏は銀色に光っている、即ち、どんな悪いことにも良い側面はある、不幸な境遇や状況の中にも一筋の光明や希望がある、という意味で使われます。
施設の休業や閉鎖はそこで働く人たちや訪問する人たちにとっては不幸に違いありませんが、動物には願ってもないサプライズをもたらしているとも言えそうです。

新型コロナウィルスの感染拡大の状況を受けて、日本政府が一世帯あたり2枚の布製マスクを配布する決定を発表しましたが、多くの批判や落胆の声が上がっています。
アベノミクスならぬ、「アベノマスク」と揶揄されてもいるようですが、日本国内で嘲笑を以って取り沙汰されていることが、海外メディアでも報じられているのを見ました。

In the latest attempt to assuage concerns over the shortage, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced plans on Wednesday to distribute two reusable cloth masks per household, to about 50 million addresses in the country.
But the plan backfired, with “Abenomask,” meaning “Abe’s Mask” -- a play on Abe’s economic policy “Abenomics” -- becoming the number-one trending topic on Japanese Twitter. Memes mocked the two-mask move as insufficient, or asked the whereabouts of the cash handouts other governments across the world are planning.
The most widely distributed meme showed the family from “Sazae-san,” a much-loved animated show starring a family of seven (and their cat), depicting the members sharing their household’s two masks between them.

小生も「マスクを各世帯に2枚配布」という見出しを見て目を疑ったものです。マスクを買いたくても店舗では売り切れ、家庭によっては不足しているとも聞きますので、無いよりかはましかと思いますが、なんで2枚なの？というのが正直な感想です。
さて、ネットではニュースサイトのコメントやSNSで著名人などが盛んに安倍首相を揶揄していますが、総理として元々どのような意図があったのか、またどのような効果を狙っていたのかは謎ですが、完全に、

今日4月2日は、アメリカでは「ブリトーの日」（National Burrito Day）なんだそうです。
National Burrito Day is today, April 2, and while dine-in restaurants are closed in multiple states across the country, major restaurants will still be celebrating the national holiday with delivery deals. From free burritos to free delivery, burrito restaurants are treating their customers with these National Burrito Day 2020 deals.

ブリトー（burrito）というのはご存知のように、トルティーヤという小麦粉で作った薄皮で、豆類や野菜、挽肉などの具材を巻いて食べるものです。
起源はメキシコ料理ですので、"burrito"もスペイン語由来の単語であり、原義は小さなロバを意味するburroから来ているそうです。
何故、小さなロバが食べ物の名前になったんでしょう？
諸説あるようですが、トルティーヤに巻いたブリトーの形状がロバの積み荷（毛布を丸めて背中に載せているイメージでしょうか）に似ているから、とかロバの耳を連想させるから、ということのようです。

新型コロナウィルスの感染拡大による経済損失が懸念されていますが、様々な業種が打撃を受け、倒産する会社や店を畳まなければならない店舗も出てきています。
今後益々多くの事例が報告されるのではないかと思われます。
都市封鎖、いわゆるロックダウンが実施されている欧米各国の都市では、人々が外出しないので、様々なお店が商売あがったりの状況だということですが、これまでと変わらず売れているものがあります。
タバコです。
Lloyd Bridges’s character in the disaster comedy “Airplane” captured it quite well when he said, “Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking.” It’s a sentiment shared by people locked down around the world. While demand for most everything outside of food and toilet paper has declined, cigarettes are holding up.
In an environment where companies are ditching their profit guidance left, right and center, Imperial Brands Plc, which makes Kool and Gauloises cigarettes, said on Tuesday that so far the virus had had no material impact on performance and trading remained in line with expectations. That echoes comments two weeks ago from British American Tobacco Plc. Shares in Imperial rose as much as 15%.

食料品や日用品の品不足が起こっていいる中、タバコは供給に事欠かないのだろうかと思ったのですが、どうやらそれなりの需要があるということのようです。

いつまで続くとも知れない外出規制や自粛ムードの中、愛煙家はやはり一服に安らぎを求めるようですね。
本日4月1日から、日本国内では屋内施設での原則禁煙がスタートし、愛煙家にはより厳しくなりましたが、国により差違はあれど、タバコが吸いにくくなっているという点では同じでしょうか。
外出せず、自宅にこもりきりですから、普段だったら吸えないものも、手を伸ばせばすぐ一服できるという状況もあり、消費に拍車をかけているのかもしれません。
さて、記事中、

という表現が出てきますが、この"fag"というのは、タバコ（cigarette）を意味する（イギリス英語の）俗語です。
語源を調べてみると、"fag end"から来ているということなんですが、この"fag end"というのはタバコのちょうど口に咥える部分、吸いさしを意味します。
"fag"はそもそも、布切れやロープなどの端のほつれた部分という意味があります。（以前取り上げた、"flag"についての語源も参照下さい。）
