limb difference

Anne Hathaway is apologizing for the "pain caused" to the limb difference community after "The Witches" received "disappointed" backlash for its depiction of disabilities.

Hathaway's Grand High Witch, the main character in Robert Zemeckis' new adaptation of Roald Dahl's "The Witches" (streaming on HBO Max), has three-fingered hands that resemble the congenital disorder ectrodactyly.

"I am sorry," Hathaway wrote on Instagram Thursday, a day after Warner Bros. issued an apology for the depiction. "I did not connect limb difference with the (Grand High Witch) when the look of the character was brought to me; if I had, I assure you this never would have happened."
(Rasha Ali. 'I promise I'll do better': Anne Hathaway apologizes for depiction of disabilities in 'The Witches.' USA Today.  November 5, 2020.)

What is a limb difference? Simply put, it’s when someone’s limb is different than most people’s. This can be because of a developmental issue in the womb, or acquired as a result of an accident or disease.

"As someone who really believes in inclusivity and really, really detests cruelty, I owe you all an apology for the pain caused," she captioned an informational video from Lucky Fin Project, a nonprofit organization that raises awareness of limb differences.
(ibid.)

Amy Marren, a 22-year-old British Paralympic swimmer, called out the film in a tweet Monday, saying she was "disappointed" in the movie's portrayal.

"Yes, I am fully aware that this is a film, and these are Witches. But Witches are essentially monsters. My fear is that children will watch this film, unaware that it massively exaggerates the Roald Dahl original and that limbs differences begin to be feared," she wrote. "This opens up all new difficult conversations for those with limb differences and sets back what we are trying to achieve which is to celebrate who you are!"
(ibid.)

sonar

A LOCH Ness Monster hunter thinks he has caught a sonar image of the beast, giving the “most compelling” evidence the creature really does exist.

The image was caught by Cruise Loch Ness director Ronald Mackenzie while he was skippering a catamaran on Wednesday afternoon.

Nessie watcher Steve Feltham described the sonar image as the “most compelling” evidence he had seen that the legendary creature really existed.
(Jon Rogers. 'SOMETHING DOWN THERE' Loch Ness Monster ‘caught on sonar’ as 30ft shape detected 500ft below surface in ‘most compelling evidence yet.’ The Sun. October 6, 2020.)

sound navigation ranging

make head or tail of

A metro train was beached upon a whale in the Netherlands late Sunday.

The conductor smashed through a barrier that would have led 32 feet down to water below, had it not been for a fortuitously placed sculpture of a whale’s tail at the De Akkers metro station, in the suburb of Spijkenisse, near the city of Rotterdam.

Authorities haven’t been able to make heads or tails of how to remove the train from its dorsal perch.

“We are trying to decide how we can bring the train down in a careful and controlled manner,” a local official told the Dutch outlet NOS Monday.
(Hannah Sparks.  Giant whale sculpture catches crashing metro train in midair. New York Post. November 2, 2020.)

Authorities haven’t been able to make heads or tails of how to remove the train from its dorsal perch.

"make head or tail of~"という慣用句は、否定文のコンテクストで、理解できない、訳が分からない、といった意味で用いられます。

pole position

The Economist

Joe Biden really is in pole position
President Donald Trump will enter election day with much worse odds than he had in 2016
(The Economist. November 1, 2020.)

square peg

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) have urged the government to halt a planned cut in Universal Credit support payments to thousands of self-employed.

A second lockdown will leave thousands of UK self-employed in the lurch, according to the FSB and TUC.

Prime minister Boris Johnson on Saturday announced a host of new measures aimed at curtailing the rising number of COVID-19 infections, including a four-week England lockdown from 5 November until 2 December.

Johnson also announced that the furlough scheme, also known as the coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, has been extended until December, as the UK economy braces for a second lockdown in England due to start on Thursday.

This means that the government will continue paying up to 80% for the wages of employees whose businesses were forced to close.

Currently the self-employed can claim just 40% of their earnings, compared to 80% for employees through the extended furlough scheme.

UK’s trade and small firms bodies have written a joint letter to the Work and Pensions secretary, Thérèse Coffey, raising “serious concerns” over the benefit cut for those seeking to earn a living by starting and growing their own business.

FSB National Chairman Mike Cherry said: “Universal Credit was never designed around the self-employed, who often feel like square pegs forced into round holes.
(UK trade unions and small firms join forces to prevent benefits cut for self-employed. Yahoo! Finance. November 2, 2020.)

the self-employed, who often feel like square pegs forced into round holes

In general terms, job hunters fall into one of two buckets. They are either a round peg in a round hole or a square peg in a round hole. While they aren’t literally a peg, I think speaking metaphorically helps folks understand how to not only market themselves.

Let me explain.

Round peg/round hole occurs when pursuing opportunities doing the same sort of work while remaining in your current industry.

From an employer’s standpoint, round pegs represent a ‘safer’ move, since the candidate already has direct experience in both the job functions and the industry.
(Randy Wooden. Wooden: Are you a round peg or a square peg? Winston-Salem Journal. April 25, 2020.)

上記に引用した記事は転職をテーマに話しているようですが、募集されている職種(ポジション)に対して適合するか(a round peg in a round hole)、否か(a square peg in a round hole)は重要でしょう。

the self-employed, who often feel like square pegs forced into round holes
