mogul

GENEVA (AP) — Swiss voters on Sunday rejected a government’s plan to inject more than 150 million francs (about $163 million) into broadcast and print media every year, including support for early-morning newspaper delivery and online media to the tune of 70 million francs (nearly $76 million) a year, according to exit polls.

Foes of the plan had said the cash injection would waste taxpayer money, benefit big newspaper chains and the media moguls who run them and hurt journalistic independence by making media outlets more dependent on state handouts and thus less likely to criticize public officials. They also said it was discriminatory, since free newspapers wouldn’t benefit.
(Jamey Keaten. Swiss voters reject public aid plan for newspapers, media. The Associated Press. February 13, 2022.)

persuade

I persuaded my father to stop smoking.

To cause (someone) to accept a point of view or to undertake a course of action by means of argument, reasoning, or entreaty

American Heritage Dictionary

Synonyms: persuade, induce, prevail, convince
These verbs mean to succeed in causing a person to do or consent to something. Persuade means to win someone over, as by reasoning or force of personality

ここで再び、"to succeed in〜"、"win 〜 over"に注目しなければなりません。

trying to persuade him to…
attempt to persuade him to…
in an effort to persuade…

President Joe Biden, who for months used techniques like public service announcements to persuade Americans to get vaccinated, feels he has struck a "brick wall" in convincing holdouts to get shots, according to people familiar with his thinking.
(Kevin Liptak. Biden unveils federal worker vaccine requirement as he strikes a 'brick wall' convincing unvaccinated Americans to get the shot. CNN. July 29, 2021.)

*President Joe Biden, who for months used techniques like public service announcements and persuaded Americans to get vaccinated,

cultural appropriation

Awkwkafina responded to longstanding criticism that she uses a fake "blaccent" in her comedy while announcing that she’s retiring from Twitter.

The "Shan-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" star, who was born Nora Lum, has long-faced criticism for her use of African-American Vernacular English (AAVE). Some have spoken out on social media to accuse the actress of doing a voice that’s a caricature of a Black person in order to be funny.
(Tyler McCarthy. Awkwafina announces Twitter break, responds to cultural appropriation. Fox News. February 6, 2022.)

The major presidential candidates criticized Beijing's apparent bid to place its claim on Korean culture, after a woman wearing hanbok, Korea's traditional dress, appeared representing an ethnic minority of China during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
(Nam Hyun-woo. Lee, Yoon slam Beijing Games for 'cultural appropriation'. The Korea Times. February 10, 2022.)

drop like a rock

The Democratic governors of three East Coast states -- Connecticut, Delaware and New Jersey -- announced Monday that they will lift mask requirements in schools in the coming weeks.

All three states referenced declines in their Covid-19 case counts, hospitalizations, test positivity rates and rates of transmission as reasons why they are planning to lift restrictions.

"Our case count, hospitalizations, the spot positivity rate, the rate of transmission are all dropping like a rock," Murphy told CNN's Jake Tapper on Monday, adding that the state is making progress with vaccinations and that there will be better ventilation options in four weeks, when the mask mandate lifts.
(Jacqueline Howard. As states plan to lift school mask mandates, CDC remains vague on updating its guidance. CNN. February 08, 2022.)

drop(ping) like a rock

the stock dropped like a rock
the price dropped like a rock

sink like a stone

JOE BIDEN has been impatiently waiting for this day for over a year.

In a speech at the Pfizer Kalamazoo Manufacturing Site in Michigan last February, the new president made clear that cancer was top of mind on his health agenda.

“I want you to know that once we beat Covid, we’re going to do everything we can to end cancer as we know it,” he said at the top of his remarks.

But Biden’s announcement of a new cancer “moonshot” kept getting delayed as new coronavirus variants arrived, according to a source familiar with the plans.

As 2022 began, the administration finally decided to move forward with the relaunch of the cancer "moonshot,” the administration’s multi-pronged initiative to fund and coordinate promising cancer treatment research that Biden created as vice president in the final year of BARACK OBAMA’s administration.
(Why Biden took his moonshot. Politico. February 2, 2022.)

an extremely ambitious project or mission undertaken to achieve a monumental goal

While 'moonshot' originally meant "long shot," it's increasingly being used to describe a monumental effort and a lofty goal—in other words, a "giant leap."

This use of moonshot refers to a project or venture that is intended to have deep-reaching or outstanding results after one heavy, consistent, and usually quick push. The $1 billion promised by the White House is intended to find a cure for cancer, and one of the business ventures that Alphabet is willing to talk about is Nest, a home automation company the produces wireless, programmable, and self-learning thermostats and smoke detectors (among other things).
