「ムーンショット」再び ー moonshot

数日前の記事になりますが、バイデン大統領が自身の肝入りの政策である、「癌に打ち克つ」政策に改めて取り組むとの姿勢を鮮明にしたと報じています。

実のところ、この政策については"cancer moonshot"と通称され、オバマ政権時代に副大統領であったバイデン氏が立ち上げたのですが、ここ数年は新型コロナの影響で取り組みが遅れ、全くかすんでしたという状況があったようです。

But Biden’s announcement of a new cancer “moonshot” kept getting delayed as new coronavirus variants arrived, according to a source familiar with the plans.

As 2022 began, the administration finally decided to move forward with the relaunch of the cancer "moonshot,” the administration’s multi-pronged initiative to fund and coordinate promising cancer treatment research that Biden created as vice president in the final year of BARACK OBAMA’s administration.

この記事を読んで、"moonshot"という単語が目に留まったのですが、これは初めてのことではありませんでした。

2016年にもこの単語を取り上げていたのです。

しかしながら、2016年当時、"cancer moonshot"というプロジェクト名に見られる意味合いを説明している辞書は無かったのです。

今になって改めて調べてみると、Merriam-Webster Dictionary（オンライン版）では"moonshot"の新しい意味合いを追加掲載していることが分かりました。

an extremely ambitious project or mission undertaken to achieve a monumental goal

というのが、その定義です。

辞書に載っていなかった当時は、「月にロケットを飛ばすような壮大な規模の（取り組み、プロジェクト）」という意味合いだろうと解釈をしていましたが、当たらずとも遠からずといったところでしょうか。

Merriam-Webster の解説によれば、2020年1月にこの意味を追加掲載した背景にはホワイトハウスの"cancer moonshot"政策があるということです。

While 'moonshot' originally meant "long shot," it's increasingly being used to describe a monumental effort and a lofty goal—in other words, a "giant leap."

This use of moonshot refers to a project or venture that is intended to have deep-reaching or outstanding results after one heavy, consistent, and usually quick push. The $1 billion promised by the White House is intended to find a cure for cancer, and one of the business ventures that Alphabet is willing to talk about is Nest, a home automation company the produces wireless, programmable, and self-learning thermostats and smoke detectors (among other things).
